i don't watch home movies
hate them
reason being because
when i was young
i was looking for a movie
my mother
had recorded for me
and accidentally
put one in the vcr
that i'm not sure
i was supposed to see
i know the obvious response
"uh oh, ****"
sorry to disappoint
they were only marked with dates
  1991
on live television
montel williams asks my father
"how can you just throw
your child away like a piece of trash?"

   1994
i spend so much time
in the emergency room
that my parents stop
penciling in growth marks
on the frame
of my bedroom door
i always thought
it was because they believed
i would never grow out
of this sickness
sometimes i believe
the reason that they
never bought me a dream catcher
was because they never thought
i'd live long enough
to see them come true
   1996
i am eliminated
from a spelling bee
because i didn't know
the 'dad' is silent in 'family'
   2013
before i got into poetry
i used to do standup
none of my jokes were funny
one of the other comics
tells me my skits are dry
sometimes sad
he says "why don't you joke
about something like your family?"

so i say
"i never wore any sunblock
because i didn't want anything
to keep me from my father"

i say "what do you call christmas
without lights or heat?"

before he has a chance
to answer
i say "1997. better yet
why don't you
make like a dad and
leave"

   2014
every time we drive
past the hospital
my mother reminds me
how much it cost to save my life
like she'd rather
have her money back
she doesn't have to say
that sometimes she wishes
it was me who had died
instead of my brother
i can hear it in the way
she says "love you"
sometimes i imagine
that if i were to die
that she
would pick out a casket for a child
because she never loved
the person i became
yesterday i told my father
how close i'd been
to suicide lately
and he said
"that's my boy,
livin on the edge.."

and i can't remember
if i laughed
or cried

Sometimes the world hands you moments.
Quiet moments,
Like lonely late night bus rides,
Where everyone is drooping in their seats
After long days at work.
Like hospital waiting rooms,
Where people are too tense,
Mouths clenched shut,
Only opening their mouths to whisper
Words of prayer.
Like early Sunday mornings,
When family is sleeping in,
And you lie alone
With your thoughts
Your body still too heavy to get out of bed
Like trying to run through water.
These small moments,
These little gifts can be wonderful,
Until the loud silence
Leads your mind to dark places
Filled with the wild hushed voices
You've always tried so hard
to keep untouched and noiseless,
Like you do late buses
Or waiting rooms
Or being awake early Sunday mornings.
But your thoughts drift towards them
And reach through the gaps,
Pulling and tugging at the monsters
And creatures you've tried so hard
To stuff away in the little boxes
In the corners of your brain,
Piled with forgotten toys and old socks
All of them covered in a thick layer of dust.
They've clawed out too quickly
For you to stop the probing fingers,
And suddenly you're trying hard
To stop tears from flowing,
But it's like trying to stop water from flowing
Out the gaps between your fingers,
You have no choice but to wait
Until there's no more water left to flow,
Or the bus ride is over
Or the doctor calls you over
Or you can't wait anymore
And you just have to get up
And go somewhere where the voices can
No longer be heard.
you were the last
bird of summer

the golds of the
sun melted as you flew

wrapped to an oak-washed
sky, that slowly unravelled

you were my love
and i loved you with every

soft breath of my soul.

When your heart thumps so
Loud, you

    Become a walking song,

And the lyrics are what you

Leave behind for other people's
Perspective.

every day, speak a little less
reduce the number of words you say from half to
ten less, and then none at all.

Don't forget to be soft.
Kiss your mountaintop goodbye for
one last sunrise and descend
into the night
where it's quiet
like you should be.

one by one, pull back towards yourself
the orbs of energy you've left
bouncing around you in the
atmosphere.
be their chalice
one last time
and watch them burn out.

and when you're reduced to
dying ashes and deathly whispers
a strong voice will suddenly falter
and they wonder -
*didn't we once know a ... ?
loud no more. i apologise for all the trouble caused.
Sometimes tears,
Are like walking through raindrops,
They hit you,
But they run off,
A few cling to you,
But not for long,
And you know that soon,
They'll dry.

But sometimes tears,
Are like walking through puddles,
That soak through your shoes,
Get your socks wet,
Keep your feet cold,
And won't go away,
Until you get inside,
And pull off your shoes,
And your socks,
And walk bare-footed,
Until they dry,
And you can face the storm,
Another time.

Remember when we were careless?

When we abandoned sleep to watch the sunrise

Snuck out at 2 to see what was out there

How our eyes glimmered with excitement

How our chest pounded to the song on our lips

Do you remember when were dancers?

When we put down our drinks to let the music be our poison

Cranked up our song to the height of the sun

When we sang it the morning after

With the windows down in Ally’s car

Me in the front, you in the back

Because I did paper and you did rock
You always did rock
And I always won

Was it to see the smile on my face?

Was it so to watch me sing uncontrollably to our favorite song?

Remember when we were stupid?

Remember when we got high in your basement?

Thought it would be a good idea to steal a signpost

Took your dad’s wrench and a step ladder

When it started pouring and we ran home in the rain

When I looked at you and rain stood still

Remember when we were animals?

Remember when we snuck out to the park

How we would drink spinneys champagne in plastic cups

How we didn’t own a bus card but took the bus everyday

How we didn’t own our own pipe but were addicts

How I loved you but never had to say anything
You could just feel it
In the wind
In my laugh
In my lips

Remember when we were young?
