snowmen, sleigh-bells and stockings (with holes)
Christmas Eve was coming There was plenty to be done There were protocols to follow There were programs to be run Presents needed wrapping Elves had duties of their own They've been doing it for centuries They could call Christmas in by phone Reindeer games were scheduled Christmas Carols to be sung There were toys to be assembled There were bells that must be wrung Christmas Cakes...no problem For we all know there's just one It gets passed around each Christmas And that is half the fun But, back now to the reindeer games Donner wasn't there But, neither were three others It gave Santa Claus a scare He called the elven vet in Said "find out what it wrong" "If I don't have all my reindeer" "It'll ruin Rudolph's song" The vet came back directly Hoof and mouth was what he said The reindeer must  miss Christmas They were all confined to bed Santa couldn't take it Reindeer home...what would he do? He thought real hard about an answer Where would he find something that flew The vet said, "I've an answer" "But, no questions...just your trust" "I'll get your gifts delivered Santa" "I just need your magic dust" Santa said "do your best Doctor" "We can't have Christmas end like this" "Are you sure you have an answer?" "We can't give Christmas time a miss" The vet and elves went searching They formed a team like none before They went around to the animals And then they knocked on Santa's door Santa looked at what they'd brought him His reindeer gone, but here they stood A team had been assembled It made Santa sink into his hood Harnessed up before him The vet had two dogs and a bear A ****** goat, and donkey And a bald, blind cat...stood there He smiled and said "Dear Santa" "They may not look like that much now" "But, they'll get you where you need to be" "And they'll be led by a brown cow" If you hear some noises From your roof, like bleats and barks Some, meowing or some mooing And other strange sounds in the dark Remember, it's just Santa With his new team for the season Rex, Rolf, Billy, Ben, Bessie, Joe, and Mike and a bald, blind cat who's freezin' Merry Christmas to all and to all....don't look up!!

Christmas can be a time when families get together: Young children scream, wine glasses gleam, both ready for M&S dinner. TV's in the corner rerunning Home Alone, Heart radio's in the kitchen, Chris Rea's driving home, again. Toddlers find the wrapping more engaging than the Duplo Teen couples find the company less of interest than their own. The dog's confused and excited with so many different sources of scratches and pats, he can't relax, his whining is remorseless. Christmas can be a time when families are missed, the parcel made last post winging off to little sis. Zoom will come in handy to laugh across the miles, the screen will mask the tears and focus on the smiles. Gran will talk of Christmas past when everyone was home 'Cept in Gulf War 1 when Uncle John went away, .... Christmas can be a time when budgets get stretched tight, cash pressures get to breaking point and prompt senseless fights. Some focus on opportunity to spend some gilt-free money, the only prayers are for extra hours and a faster tesco trolley. For others it's simply ' Yuletide' an excessive celebration, a winter feast, all you can eat, give in to all temptation. Most focus on the family, even more on the gifts; there's little time for Jesus assigned amongst the myths. Some do remember Jesus from half forgotten carols, they know there's something more than donkeys and angel heralds. For there He is in the middle, noticed once in a while; it's His birthday, but all He's getting is a half-hearted song and a smile. He's no longer a babe in a manger, He's now a resurrected King, waiting for those who would worship to stand and welcome Him in. Whatever your experience of Christmas you can come just as you are, His love is unconditional He'll accept you warts and all. So come on! It’s a season to celebrate! To dance, to sing and to shout! Your Saviour invites you to join Him, so when you sing this Christmas, make it count.

(To my sisters and brother) I will always miss … Our sunset ending quarrels Our never-ending teases Christmas’ shared carols Warm hugs Through sweet gazes The sarcastic smiling faces The growing-up races Revenge taking chases Greed over goodies to be hidden In unpredictable places And I will always miss … Competitions and crazy bets Singing hilarious duets Of made-up songs in the shower This innocence Of our childish humor Screamed from a room to another That art of tricking eachother To cleverly stay in control Or wrestling over the remote control And I will always miss … Decades of shared history Amplified joy and divided misery Bursts of laughter on old tapes Creatively imagined games Of whirlpools in drapes And goalkeeper leaps Random costume parties Daily role-play stories Sega sagas from dusk to dawn Alliances and conspiracies Sisters, my lovely sisters Wise, you have become Loving wives, caring mothers Soon, you will become Make sure your kids relive What we used to live Their uncle will make you proud Just like you fill him with pride Brother, dear brother I secretly looked up to you As I grew older I kept resembling you It doesn’t matter If you’re a little far Brotherhood’s a matter Of unbreakable bond And I will always admire, respect, love and cherish … Every single one of you

Innate Blessings
It was hard in the Moonta Mines that year For the miners, down in the pit, It wasn’t a place for a weak man, but The Cornish Miners had grit, They burrowed deeper with every day Extracting the copper ore, And the skimps grew high in the heaps that piled Not far from the Moonta shore. They wore their helmets deep in the mine With a candle fixed to the brim, And worked in the glow of the candlelight While the pumps pumped out and in, They pumped for water, they pumped for air For the air in the mine was rank, And water seeped at the lowest lode Where the atmosphere was dank. They built their cottages out of lime And mud, with a building board, On Sundays, that was the only time Once they had prayed to the Lord, The Cornish Miners were Methodists Built numerous churches there, And Cap’n Hancock had said, ‘Attend! Or your job is gone – Beware!’ Those men of flint had hearts of gold And they raised their children fine, Sons would follow their fathers then And go to work in the mine, One Christmas Eve they were gathered there By their hundreds, on the green, A candle lit on their helmets each Like a glittering starlit scene. The wives and children were there as well With their voices raised in praise, The swelling sound of an angel choir With their humble miners ways, They called it Carols by Candlelight And the movement grew apace, It spread all over the world from this The Moonta Miners grace. The First Carols by Candlelight
Santa's Lazy Elf Five more days till Christmas, Santa and his crew were working overtime making children's dreams come true . Singing carols, whistling tunes, as the hours ticked away, except for little Edison the elf that went astray. Instead of making toys in Santa's assembly line, he was hanging out with Rudolph beneath the snow capped pines. As Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus took a look around, they noticed lazy Edison was nowhere to be found. They decided they'd had enough this elf will surely be fired, scratched their heads and realized another must be hired. Dasher heard them talking and thought this can't be so, never in elf's history has someone had to go. He searched the winter wonderland and under the Northern Lights Edison and Rudolph were frolicking in flight. He said "Come down from there your behavior's a disgrace, Christmas Eve is almost here and you're about to be replaced. Edison soon realized his days of slacking were done, that there'd be consequences for goofing off and having fun. He knew he had no place to go if Santa didn't let him stay his heart began to pound, as Rudolph ran way. He hurried as fast as he could to tell Santa he was wrong, beg him for forgiveness and show him he belonged. As the other elves were caroling he tried to sneak inside, but Santa saw him coming out of the corner of his eye. He placed his hands upon his hips and firmly shook his head, "What shall I do with you my elf," Santa firmly said. "I see you when you're sleeping I know when you're awake, did you not read your history book he said for goodness sake!" Santa soon forgave him cause his heart is made of gold, and Edison became the hardest worker I am told. The moral of this story is we all must do our part, and jolly old St Nick has always had a heart. Merry Christmas to all of you on this holiest of days, may all your dreams come true as you gather and celebrate! Written By Kathy J Parenteau Copyright © December 2013 All Rights Reserved

The Heat, and not the sports team Has come here for a while It's enough to set some records And to **** the farmers smiles Humidity and high temperatures Add to make our life like hell It's drying up our creeks and streams There's no water in our wells We do not use our ovens To cook our meals, not now at least We just leave meat on the counter The outside heat will cook the beast Our lawns are brown and dormant But the weeds are growing strong There is chickweed and crabgrass where once Green grass did once belong The splash pads are on overtime To help keep people cool We've cooling centers everywhere They're in all of the schools In order to cool down at home I have my a/c set to freeze And if at times this doesn't work I watch Christmas DVD's Remember hats and sunscreen to keep the heat off of your head In fact it is so god ****** hot I tan while I'm in bed I remember as a child Summer never got as hot as this Compared to recent temperatures Is like a blow job to a kiss We pray for heat in winter And in the summer, the reverse I know I would like the snow The heat is much, much, worse Instead of just complaining I should just take it, brave the heat But for now, I'll watch my movies Sing my carols, cool my feet I know that come this winter I'll be crying for the heat Just remind me of this little poem And I'll shut up, and take my seat.

The Heat
In this, my last hour of rhyme, with stains uncontainèd by shaking hands Spreading like red soldiers running wartime untempered by generals shouting commands Then laughing like drunkards, drowning in wine that rich purple spills out from its barrels Then lying on bartops, eyes shine porcine and unheard soft voices hiss curses and carols. O, woe be on me if I speak out of time; out-tumbling come innards, spewed from a mouth Which whispered sad prayers in corners of grime: hints of spring-season on trips to the south; Watch them out-tumble, watch horri-divine like the death of the tragic, acted but true Yet laughing old minstrels declare it quite fine: and friends ensure royal-men breathe not from the blue. Hours fly past on wings of the Sun who turns misted eyes from child-fight below And lives lives of many, but cares not for none not least merchant servants, throttled in the snow. I fade and I fade: a blossom once watered and love of the stage is clogging my throat It changes my words: I fight it, I fought it and hot-wet floods up with drowning and choke. This minute, these words: I defy death. And cold, outward slipping: my slow final breath.

Death of the Poet, Mercutio
(o, holy night) sweet carols ring throughout the dark echoing joyously — warm words wrap their arms around us with our hearts aglow we know that we sing of mercy and goodness and fulfilled promises (the stars are brightly shining) we dance in peppermint winds against skies ablaze with colored lights spinning on the water’s surface but none shine more brightly than this dawn breaking in me for come has the One for whom this weary world’s been waiting (it is the night) the air is thick with symphonies of spices cars glide past us, eager to make it home children laugh, there are strangers no more baby born, God of angels and galaxies distant no more (of our dear Savior’s birth) how beautiful this truth -- that thrill of hope became tangible in a manger love itself swaddled in cloth the cry of this child broke centuries of silence His eyes bright with a promise of all things new and glorious o, how divine how divine is this night

night divine
I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear; Those of mechanics—each one singing his, as it should be, blithe and strong; The carpenter singing his, as he measures his plank or beam, The mason singing his, as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work; The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat—the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck; The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench—the hatter singing as he stands; The wood-cutter’s song—the ploughboy’s, on his way in the morning, or at the noon intermission, or at sundown; The delicious singing of the mother—or of the young wife at work— or of the girl sewing or washing—Each singing what belongs to her, and to none else; The day what belongs to the day—At night, the party of young fellows, robust, friendly, Singing, with open mouths, their strong melodious songs.

I Hear America Singing
O sing a new song, to our God above, Avoid profane ones, 'tis for holy choir: Let Israel sing song of holy love To him that made them, with their hearts on fire: Let Zion's sons life up their voice, and sing Carols and anthems to their heavenly king. Let not your voice alone his praise forth tell, But move withal, and praise him in the dance; Cymbals and harps , let them be tuned well, 'Tis he that doth the poor's estate advance: Do this not only on the solemn days, But on your secret beds you spirits raise. O let the saints bear in their mouth his praise, And a two-edged sword drawn in their hand, Therewith for to revenge the former days, Upon all nations, that their zeal withstand; To bind their kings in chains of iron strong, And manacle their nobles for their wrong. Expect the time, for 'tis decreed in heaven, Such honor shall unto his saints be given.

Sing a New Song
Dear Talia, I don't want to be a tortured artist. I don't want to be depressed and I don't want to be anxious. Competitive sadness and disorders treated like accessories disgust me. The world glamorizes mental illness, and I don't understand why. There is nothing romantic about being mentally ill just like how there's nothing glamorous about a broken wrist or a torn medial collateral ligament. There's nothing romantic about constantly being afraid that the world will fold in itself and **** you with it. There's nothing romantic about feeling like you could break down and cry at any moment. This is the first piece I've written while being medicated. I want it to be Christmas already. The world dreams itself a halo, but can only attain horns. The halo is an illusion and the horns are an idea. I'm due to take another Lorazepam. Would I look cool to the kids who idolize dysfunction and misinterpret pain as style, if I were to take one of these, with water and a distant glance, in front of them? Geez, to have their approval would to have everything and nothing at all. I'm not sure why I've written as much about this as I have. You. It is 2:48 am and all I can think about, in this moment, is you. I can't wait to spend Christmas with you. I can't wait to wear bad Christmas sweaters, and be the couple everyone hates, as we sing Christmas carols and spread holiday cheer. I wrote this poem a few minutes ago. Sometime around 2:30 am. I'm not sure. I'm exhausted: I sat on the edge of my bed, and on the edge of my life, medicated to the point of pointlessness. Soft. It was the nineteenth, not the twentieth, and I wished I saw the fireworks with her fifteen days earlier. My gasps tore the shingles off of the house. And they hung suspended above the hole in the roof. And God stared down into my room, as the shingles swirled skyward. "I see you," I said, "but I don't believe in you." I left home and ran until I was a dream that had passed itself. I hope that was okay. I love you. Yours, Joshua Haines

Alexander K Opicho (Eldoret, Kenya;[email protected]) songs of freedom in Kenya are paradoxical of themselves they have become the songs of oppressive tyranny they are not songs that were sang by freedom fighters in the tropical forests of aberdares and Mabanga they are blissful carols of powers that be mouthed by the state poets in the deadly feats of political sycophancy fuelled by cult of betrayal and espionage, a real substructure of state dictatorship they are not the true songs of mau mau that were sang by Kimathi wa miciuri they are the songs of the top crust of the tribal and political powers that be in oblivion of the cultural revolutionaries that countermanded cultural Darwinism of European imperial gamesters they are not the songs sang by Elijah Masinde of Dini Msambwa that spirited up cultural aura of cultural dignity;which cautioned certainly an African against the cultural call of the white culturalizer the African to balk and turn his back and **** and spit scornfully at cultural trickster in the colonial ploy to dance for Dini ya Msambwa in the spirit of war and fires of war that is to be fought in preservation of democracy and cultural freedom.

SONGS OF FREEDOM IN KENYA
(spot the Carol) These three kings of orient are   unfairly competing with one little drummer boy,   all dashing through the snow for the last boughs of holly   to lay them before the King. Meanwhile three ships come sailing in   and certain poor shepherds leave their hot chestnuts, each keen to hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace.   Later, in Royal David’s city,   there are ladies leaping, pipers piping and drummers … drumming,  apparently.   The restless cattle are lowing big-time;   no wonder the baby’s awake. All have come to proclaim the Messiah’s birth;   the king-of-angels  baby who out-shines any wondrous star.   A child born of Mary, on this most holy of nights;   born to give us second birth:   This is the Saviour who is Christ the Lord,   come to redeem us all. ‘Come – receive – your - king.’ Merry Christmas.

Carols collated
For centuries we have all been fighting wars. Taking up arms and going off to fight. Fight because we’re told to or because we think it’s right. Taking up arms to fight the good fight. War becomes a habit – If you let it. So we all go out and **** all our foes. We gun them down and pick over the bones. We leave them for dead rolling about in pain. And sing Christmas Carols when it’s over. War became a habit – And we let it. Copyright: Gordon Warren (1980)

War Becomes A Habit
She’s got daisies in her hair Collected on a hike With a bubbling brook laugh We circled the bay on bike Her blinding essence We fit like a glove Dive in the pool And also a love She’s got apple cider lips And cinnamon filled eyes Leaves drift off the trees We promise no goodbyes Her coat warm and ready For the next blanket of snow Carols in the square Sleepy snuggles by the fireplace aglow

Yes I jumped in those leaves crunchy, fluffy, autumn leaves Waded in the decorative fountain Climbed on the public art Yes I danced swing in the BART station Hid in the grocery store among rolls of toilet paper Had to *** a ride after the Dicken's faire Played in the rain Hugged my mother Made my dad take me to see Tangled in 3D Yes I measured the baking soda for those dinosaur chocolate chip cookies Loved Steve Irwin will all my childhood admiration Was afraid of the Deep End Memorized Shel Silverstein Remember my sister reading me Harry Potter Gripping my best friend on Tower of Terror, Indiana Jones, Space Mountain Sang Christmas Carols in October And I'm not even sorry I was a pirate paleontologist pop-star pokemon master steampunk rocker renaissance girl who time-traveled, hunting T-rex adventuring with Christopher Robin, Calvin and Hobbes Made two corsages for my junior prom, fed ducks, ate at Mels, posed in the dollar store, watched the Avengers in our glittering dresses for the second Laughed so hard I cried about the stupidest things I doubted, got lost in Costco, found my faith Had my prayers answered For the bestest, most faithful friends I have the "simple human relief of knowing you’ve done wrong, and living through it" And don't take this the wrong way It's not like I'm going to jump off a bridge Well, maybe with a bungee cord? But if I died right now **** Gone. I wouldn't say I envied anybody Not really We've had a pretty **** great time haven't we? Oh sure I'd protest Places to go, people to see, things to eat, but... My defensive carer named Alfreido Dimpitt Reemo You see my nice regular carer, Andrew Williams was sick and didn't want go to work Which put spanner in the works in the office, and they were wondering who will replace him So they decided to ask Alfreido Dimpitt Reemo a call, and were happy when he said yes And they forgot to tell his first client, who can be very confusing in conversation But they forgot to tell that client and Alfreido turned up at his door And this was the day that Andrew was going to take him for a walk through the domain Where the Christmas carols, and Alfreido was happy to take him And they had a cool time, till the client told him about his old carer who was names Reimo And Aldreido snapped at him, and his client thought that he doesn't understand happiness And this made him happier, and he started laughing and trying to joke around with Alfreido And Alfreido did joke with him, and really they started to hit off And then, so his client mentioned his old carer Reimo and how much of a **** he was And Alfreido got defensive, in fact he got so angry he nearly hit his client And this made his client too shy to say anything else On the risk that Alfriedo was going to do it again And he even was afraid to speak his mind, in the risk he'll snap at him And his client were unhappy about how this carer treated him Especially when they were leaving the domain and there were some teenagers teasing him And this made his client think that Alfreido was teasing him with the kids I know he had issues for what he said, but, he though this was very wrongs the way His carer was behaving, and every time he mentioned Reimo, in hoping that he would Joke around with you, he will snap, as if you were trying to rob you or something So at the end when Alfriedo left, he didn 't know what to do So he rang up the carers organization and told them why Alfreido came instead of Andrew And they told him they had no choice, it was either Alfreido or no one And this client said, ok in the future, I will prefer no one, especially if you send him again Because he is too defensive, when I mention the name of my old carer And despite telling him why he snapped, he still felt very unsafe And said, I want you to send no one, or send no one Because I felt I am offending this carer with anything I say And I don't know what I really said, and the organisation said, fine And Alfreido never saw him again, And the next time Andrew came, and he was very relieved And told him that the bad carer has gone, and will never return And Andrew said, yes, mate, I will make sure they don't ever send him again Sent from my iPhone

On Christmas Eve, the street was dead Most folks were home or gone The buildings all were empty That is, except for one Gianni kept the lights on As he did most every night To let the people of the street Know that everything's all right Gianni's was a haven A safe house for the street The residents were welcome And there was always a free seat On Christmas Eve, though magic... would take place inside the back For each Christmas Eve at midnight They'd get more than Santa with his sack Precisely at the hour When Christmas Day became the date The house lights dimmed just slightly As if by magic, or by fate There on stage with Gianni Sat the Bluesman and a band Some only played this concert It was the best one in the land Hymns and Christmas carols Sung like angelic odes of joy And as always ...there's the Bluesman Smiling, looking just a little coy You never knew his secrets There was always more than he would show And most folks would pay a fortune To know just what this man did know Holy, Holy, Holy, and songs from years gone by were mixed with hymns that grabbed your heart and made most folks there cry It was invitation only Just the folks from on the street The locals didn't post it It was kept quiet.... indiscreet He played for near three hours His little band of odds and sods Singing songs of Christmas Singing songs to God He always had his med-sin that small flask was by his side And Gianni, every watchful made sure it never did go dry The Bluesman, stopped the concert the room was quiet, all subdued And everyone just sat there I swear, not one person moved He opened up the window Pointed to the brightest light He said "another saviour may be born" "And it may just be tonight" It was on a night like this my friends That Mary did give birth When Jesus Christ, our saviour was given life right here on earth My music sends a message To all, both near and far The same message was sent years ago By one bright shining star Gianni, led them all outside And they stared into the sky Silent Night indeed, Gianni thought And then the Bluesman bid goodbye He went back through the kitchen To where he slept most winter nights Where Gianni, gave him refuge You know it's safe....from the bright lights.......

*T'was a month before Christmas and lights needed hanging. The tree needed trimming, (my headache was banging). "The stocking were hung on the chimney with care..." While electrical chords, were strewn everywhere. I unloaded boxes of tree decorations And listened to carols from old AM stations. "When out on the lawn, there arose such a clatter...." I hurried outside to see what was the matter. Over-reaching the hedges, the ladder gave way. And then I saw, in the bushes he lay. After shocking himself with a faulty light socket, His tootsie roll'd melted, inside of his pocket. He stumbled and bumbled, untangling the strands Replacing the burnouts and cutting his hands. The ordeal was finished. At last! What a feat! (Then one strand burned out, as we watched from the street.)*
