kell Jan 31
five years
since i’ve written on this page
Its my story of a teen girl midst ideation
15 years old I was scared of my own brain
felt as if evolution failed on me
how could i want to die
when every cell in my body was made to want to stay alive.
I’m 20 now
I can’t believe i made it out.
This page is now a testimony for myself
My brain is protecting me now
I can’t remember the memory
but they speak to me through my young words. no matter how poorly written.
Just here to say my life is now beautiful
There is no cage.
The peace I feel.
Writing is memory
and a way out.
I’m not a poet, never have been.
But i love how words seem to speak when nothing else can.

I’m alive! Listen to my heartbeat!
The door is closed and my heart is behind it.
It’s knocking as if it wants to escape. Silly,
It’s cold and frost outside. You’ll be chilly.

I’m alive! Look, these are tears.
That’s how it can be with poor trees,
When their trunks are cut with a knife.
Their pain will be soothed by the rain for life.

I’m alive! You see, I’m running.
I don’t need no you or your halls. Just nothing!
I’m running at random, no matter where!
My star will guide me now and forever!
This poem is a life slogan for me for some time now. And thank you for reading it! I appreciate your attention.

I truly hope it all washes away
The guilt, complacency and your fears
That like the flood, it cleanses it all
You start anew, forget what you knew
Sleep without worry, dream and never fret
It'll all wash away, be free of your chains

i race across the boardwalk and
i taste the waves,
throw my phone into the ocean and
find some form of freedom—
whatever’s left will do! I’d do
anything to find out who i’m supposed
to be, i guess that should be me,
but i’ve never met that girl
(𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘦?)
so instead i keep running and
you might ask from what but
only the Lord knows that and maybe
my tide-worn mother too but once
she tried to tame the frizz out
of my hair but it didn’t work because
she never expected to have a firecracker
for a daughter, 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘹𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘳
𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦, but i left that all behind so i could
race across the boardwalk
and taste the waves, but now
i am here and somehow the salt
tastes bitter.

Vote red
And fill the children with dread
As they fear they may never see their parents again
Vote red
And put your sexuality in his hands
And never express yourself again
Vote red
And let their choices be erased
A world where every voice is disgraced.
Vote red
And live in fear
That your voice may disappear
Vote red
And put yourself to wonder
Is this the world we wanted to create?
Or the one we were too scared to stop before it was too late?
I hope this doesn't get me canceled.
I wanted to let you know I forgive you for your fear of losing your independence.

The fear that came with a cost: each other.
You freed me.

And when I return to the safely fenced space, you open the gate and remind me there's a whole world out there, waiting.
If you stand strongly with and for Liberty
I will fearlessly join you
If you stand firmly for Freedom
I will cheer the noble gestures of your kingdom
If you stand enthusiastically for Equality
I will ecstatically stand with you too
If you stand for good democracy
I will help you spread the seeds of Love
I will happily clap when the doves are hovering above
If you stand solidly for fair and equal justice
I will help you ring the bells of peace
I will fervently pray for you all the time
I will sporadically listen to the tintinnabulation of the chime
Brothers and sisters, I have tears of hope in my eyes today
Otherwise
My pen is able and ready amidst the fray
And it won’t be so wise
Because I love my fellow human beings, our people
Who are black, red, white, yellow and purple.

P.S. This poem is dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and to our brothers and sisters.
