You nuzzled into my fresh stubble
Whilst remnants of hardened toffee
Nested in the crack of your lips.
Our eyes following the flares heading sky bound
Until our necks jarred back, upon the crackled impact.

But then the late autumn frost
Took grasp of our spines
Sending them into numb spasm.
We drew to the conclusion
That now was the hour to perhaps retreat
To the warmth indoors.

Flame-licked wantons chase
Skewered scorpions
And tofu-tossed blood
To the echoes of heroes howling
“Gambei!” (“cheers!”) and a
Smoke stained Huacheng Road.

Like a scribe before the oracle,
I tuck atop hydrant,
Squatting in an unfamiliar scene
And allow this ink to sink atop paper;

An artist, not so much, but a dreamer
With firecrackers for brains
And brains for the scene
And sense of it all –
I could get lost in this madness;
I could fall in love with this madness.

And like that, the sound of fireworks plunged into the sky.
We were adults left pretending as kids.
Watching the fireworks highlight the essence of each others face.
Each explosion substituted the throb of patient hearts

The jitter of anticipation now immanent
Highlighting our face a different array of colors.
Subtle, the light flashed against our face, a blossoming rose bud flourishing
in bright flash.
Each smile distinguished in the aroma of our heart displayed in the sky.
Soon disappearing into shadow of the night.
And we, forever etched in a memory.
In hindsight, our hearts had a blast.
Reaching up high then falling back to the ground
When we were joyfulness,
we were secret fireworks.
and when we were bitterness,
we were wolves in plain sight.

Everytime I see your bubbly smile I'm actually watching fireworks.
The air smells explosive when you let that first one go and I feel the shockwave hit my chest.
You light up the night, not once, not twice, but for what seems like forever, so radiant and clamoring its impossible to ignore you.
You captivate me with quickly blooming blossoms whenever you snicker and I want nothing more than to sit where I am and stare at you for hours.
You never get tired of releasing your light into the world, and you never get old; you only get more beautiful to me from beginning to the end.

*Save the finale just for me.

Two lovers who never quite were,
Two perfect matches never lit aflame,
One burned out and left in a blur,
One saved spark and stayed the same.
The ghost of what could have been
