I'm in here*

Tangled beneath untamable vines of conformity
TB Sep 2014
We all have things in life
That try to bring us down.
We push and pull and fight,
And scream for any way out.

Held tight for bonds of conformity,
Not daring to stand out.
We bury our identities,
And ourselves, begin to doubt.

But there's no reason for these things to be,
Why hide a luminous light?
Forget the rest and live your life,
And let your dreams take flight.
my spirit
will not be caged
by conformity
and ignorance

We're bowing down to a system
Which uses us like pawns
Controlling our very actions
From the moment our first breath is drawn

We're not using our free will
If such a thing exists
They're subjecting us to their ideals
Molding our minds with an iron fist

I'm waking from this living nightmare
And why is it only me
Whose desperate to escape this fate
Why am I the only one to see

I try clawing my way out
But it's useless and I wonder
*Is it better to be aware and helpless
Or ignorant and still under?

Tied down
by *** appeal and conformity,
by following directions of sloppy men with sinful ambitions,

How could you expect happiness from her too?

What a lie she lived, smiling only when commanded.

I'll tell you what's strange, my friend:
what was once the lifestyle of a movie star in 1956,
has become true of the average teenager in 2014

Bright and cavalier
You wring out your neck
With heavy hands

Show me a tongue without an anchor
Glistening eyes without glamour
Are you filled empty
With crowd mentality?

Your swell of bitter laughter
Is cruelty incandescent as fire

To people who accept only what they've been brought up to believe, and reject conflicting ideals by reflex.
A fine kid raised
in the thoughts of everybody around
applying to the norm
forged in wise conformity

Body and soul
resonating
by the coldness spoken
with your heart-warming voice

Creation abandoning
words become worlds
deforming reality
inside and outside your mind

Do as you please, fine kid
'cause justified your actions are
within the peace of your heart
and the ignorance in your soul

Education as weapon
in a war behind your eyes
freedom achieved
by awakening yourself

Fighting prohibited
fleeing futile
as truth lies when lies come true
will you transcend?
The title and also the poem itself are takes on a famous phrase out of George Orwell's '1984', beginning with 'War is peace'...

a talkative beast

spewing half truths

and half lies

confident as the kid

in your class who

always raised his hand

to mouth

the wrong answer

a kettle on the boil

whistling absurdities

shrill as

a woman who

has waited an hour

at the rusty tap

with a blue plastic bucket

to find the last drop

trickle away

a menagerie of vultures

salivating in unison

at moist corpses

in the street and

swooping on the dead

for a quote

like eager students

waiting for exam results

to be plastered

on the notice board

a mercurial mistress

who breaks

a different bed everyday

for limp men desiring

a high-decibel

performance for

a two paisa act

culminating

in a contrived

******

an electronically enabled

carrion crew

reducing pillage

to inches of column

on newsprint

a veritable feast

isn’t it

with Marie biscuits

and steaming tea

there is no escaping

this monster

of many heads

and one tongue

for it whispers

a worldview

its gait

insidious and stealthy

as it pounces

on sheep who

then bleat

its platitudes

as the truth

and nothing but

the truth
The media as a cauldron of conformity
