There are reasons to smile
In gratitude for all the good times
Wrapped away in a warm blanket
Of summertime

Sweet sunshine of nostalgia streams
Through the growing years of memories
Unpacked and dusted through masks
The antiques got a golden makeover
Polished and restored to their prime

Ash from the sacred fire rose
Sandalwood incense lit close
Fragrance of the past lingers
On the sunlit doors

Harmoniously
Blending the old and new within
Hopes renewed and happiness felt
Laughter echoed through the corridors
Lighting up the eyes of old and wise

It’s the smell of cigarettes,
too early in the morning.
When you choke on your own spit,
and snort while you laugh.
It’s the carbonated drink,
in the old pillsbury dough boy cup.
The way the sun shines,
between white curtains,
that are almost translucent.
It’s saying the word,
“****!”,
when your lighter doesn’t work.
It’s the red carpet on the stairs,
and the way they creak,
when you haven’t quite mastered them.
It’s making mud pies,
in the puddle of your driveway,
every time it pours.
When you hit the wrong light switch,
though it’s been more than a few years
It’s the sound of the breaks,
when the bus stops in the morning,
and you can barely roll out of bed.
The sweet smell of dandelions,
before your dad mows them.
It’s dyeing your hair,
and staining your friend’s bathroom sink.
It’s losing your bra in a glovebox,
and never finding it again.
It’s learning how to live,
before you lose your chance.

Mother of many waters
the manner with which she ascends
is sympathetically informed
we are a running spring
from her womb
flowing along the magical line
of peaks and summits
to cascading fiery birthright

and the rain fell
and the snow settled
and the ice theologized
to remind us
the outside world still worships
her eruptive embers

In a small sailboat
I went to sea alone
and came back reborn.
A clear day and light winds
turned an intended short day
sail into high seas and strong
winds, 9 hours later I found my
way home, in a tattered boat,
an older and wiser man. With
a humility cake eaten whole
with nothing to wash it down
but salt water.
