Under the Eye
Meg Howell Jan 2015
Late night game shows droning on
Frozen pizza boxes on the counter
Eyes fixated on that glowing screen
Communication has come to a halt
Is this all we're living for?

Homework scattered on the bedroom floor
Laying in bed and sleeping till 1
Never seeing the light of day
Is this all we're living for?

Let's make a new beginning
You and I
Where the birds still sing
And we watch the sun rise
Let's step outside of our comfort zones
Before loneliness eats us up
Take away the materialistic dream of the world
And create our own masterpiece

Politics
Meg Howell Jan 2015
If humans as we know
were creatures in the sea
Why, people would be fish
with the government as sharks
stealing our sanity
bringing humanity to its end

The lies of the world are algae
truth is the coral
If you see past the clouded obstacles
you'll see the coral reef of truth in a sea of lies

Materialism
Meg Howell Jan 2015
If all you've ever wanted was material things
and the perfect lover
with the adorable personality
who takes you on coffee shop dates
and buys your happiness
you are the problem with society

If all you've ever wanted was money,
money to buy that car,
or to travel to that place,
or to eat at that restaurant,
then you, my friend, are not part of the truth
Reality is that life is never what it seems
and these materials will some day turn to dust
along with you and I
Don't let materialism be your vice

Losing it
Meg Howell Jan 2015
Control
Headed towards you like a bullet
Winds up to 105 mph they say
Sweeping, spinning, stirring
Power is out of your hands
Fear will take over
Helplessness is your aura
And lost control is your essence

A Child's Innocence
Meg Howell Jan 2015
A child's innocence is what I long for
Instead of worrying at every door

A child's innocence is what I long for
To feed my imagination with things worth more

A child's innocence is what I long for
To stop and be at peace for one second, sure

A child's innocence is what I long for
To play a teacher or doctor and find a cure
for this messed up world
with ups and downs
A child's innocence is what I long for

Hardships
Meg Howell Jan 2015
Gallant knights sweeping forth
A brave war they seek ahead
They can't seem to shake the feeling of stress forming storms that wish them dead
//One dreams of a life with the "perfect" girl
Another ponders a life of endless wealth
This one wants of food and clothes
That one wants to just be known
//But what none could see
And what none could plan
Is that world would come crashing in
//The vivacious boat full of ***** and broads
Seemed also to be full of snakes and frauds
//With every laugh and hearty drink
There seemed to be an equal thunder clap
They couldn't hide from the beast outside
That wished to swallow them whole and be satisfied
//Enemies can be hidden, and enemies can be shown, but not all trials and tribulations can be faced on your own

Babbling brook
Meg Howell Jan 2015
Although he may make your spine tingle and your stomach dance in its lonely pit, is it love?
Do you want to explore the wonders of his eyes for the rest of your life?
Do his lips make you want to kiss him all day long?
Does his voice put a smirk on your face?
Do you want to listen to his thoughts night and day?
Could his way with words put you to sleep like the sweetest lullaby?
So, just think
Before you give this person your life,
Make sure you want every single inch of them
Make sure they make you smile like you've never smiled before
And make sure that the love they give is as pure & effortlessly beautiful as a babbling brook

To my Future Daughter
Meg Howell Jan 2015
So when you call that boy up and tell him you don't have a burning, smoldering love for him, come to me
We can talk and drink soda while sitting on the kitchen floor in the refrigerator light
When you've had more than you can take and you can't handle the path you're going down, I'll lead the way
We can share the road of pain and dance in the sun's golden rays
When you get a job you aren't satisfied with just for good money, speak to me
We can both bear the financial burden as you open your cage and follow your heart
The thing you mustn't ever do, my dear, is just settle
Don't settle for false love,
or a lifestyle,
or a job,
or a feeling
Find where you belong
I'll be there to help you on the way
