What loud roar is there present in the night?
Does the bright white sheet cover all to see?
The sound does hum with constant beat and bite.
A blanket provides protection to thee.

A powerful force is blown in your face
as graceful flakes dance around your bare head.
You shield yourself against the whirling lace.
Opaque and silent it becomes widespread.

But will this unique veil protect or harm?
The delicate drops begin to push you
No strength, no power it gives you alarm
Somewhat swaddled your heart beats in rhythm too.

A cold Nor’easter gives quite a great scare.
White drifts protect all in the winter air.

Close. Welcoming. My
name. David. Absurdly—I mean, out of
tune. Ordinary language permits
the paraphrase:

Things could have been. But
actually are. Countless ways,
certain descriptions. To consider,
“ways things could have been.”

Things might be. The possibilities,
the propositions, the structures.

the second breakup hurts just as much as the first,
but i cannot distinguish which loss was worse.

a mind that feels no gratitude to the forest
is a coarse mind indeed—without siladhamma—
the body feeds off doubts the mind will seed.

when they replaced my half-torn slip-ons with velcro, i laced up.
orange jumpsuits pushed lunch trays and sized from the waist up.

and his eyes are stained with glass
shattered hopes, built to last
and his lungs are made from brass

yet remains silent during mass.
his body's a church and it's vast
and his eyes are stained with glass

watching a young, lad and lass
whom he searched for have a blast
and their lungs are made from brass

as they roll about the grass.
they fell in love quite so fast
and his eyes are stained with glass

because the two should be in class
but all of that has come to past
and their lungs are made from brass

she laughed a lot and he had a gas
he calls to God, not to pray but ask
why his eyes are stained with glass
and his lungs are made from brass?
