You know how many times we looked at the screen
hoping we could see ourselves in there?
and you know how we never even caught a glimpse?

Still don't know what we were expecting.
We were a little too beautiful to sell our souls
to some weird carnival mirror,
and, anyway, you can't instastory a heart,
no matter how hard some might try.

However, every now and then
I can't help but look again at that screen
and just wonder how the clowns
might see the stranger.

Do they know that time may not change them,
but that they can't trace time?

This ever-growing exodus
of one-hit-wonders
drifting through the air.
A single word
away from obscurity.

Perhaps it would be better
to never rise, only
to hit the ground with their tears...
and, most importantly—
follower count.

my words are used to having a destination -
a conversion rate,
      a like-to-click ratio,
              a saved post across timelines.
my words are used to being weighed
in golden showers of praise
by would-be strangers,
by eyes almost in a daze
from the internet and its dangers;
my words are more than happy
to be forgotten the next day -
they get that from me.

what happens when your words
fail to tip the scales
in any direction?
what happens when measuring fails,
and the mercy of others
is your only salvation?
what happens when your words decide
that their life is not one worth living?

if a heart breaks
and bleeds words onto a paper,
but no one reads them,
did it really break?

if words spill onto a page,
but no one saw them being spilt,
was a poem even written?
scary breakdowns resulted in me not posting every single poem in napowrimo. I salute those who can, and revere the ones who don't care. but most of all, i am jealous of those who get away with it.

if a tree falls in a forest, but no one hears the sound, did it really fall?

What is your masquerade of moving pictures now
that you’ve landed screen down on the floor?
Will you keep your mask as tied to your heart as you keep your cards close to your chest?
I’m beginning to think you don’t even know what lies beneath it anymore.
Would you recognise your own broken skin?
Lines naturally painted to your face?
Curves on your hips?
You were begging for so long to become a work of fiction - how does it feel to not exist?
To have become an echo of toxic vanity?
You filled in all the the cracks for all your followers to see
But now they see them all
As your world shatters
screen down on the floor.
In a world full of characters created online, what would happen if it all went away?

- Part of a project I’m working on.

I spend
Fictional money on fictional things
Because I am more fictional than I am real.
Because I feel alien, like I am not of this world.

And I make
Digital purchases in digital worlds
because I've been living in one since I was three.
At least my cage had a dusty old computer.

So often I wished that I could climb inside
to be with the sparkling gifs, and neon dogs
and people whose names I did not know.
They too, were aliens, not of this world.

Maybe we all live in a poorly written fanfiction
or a comic littered with jpeg artifacts
posted on deviantart in 2007
and abandoned to rot by our god.

Maybe someday, she will pick me up and dust me off
and protect me from all those who cringe
at the juvenile creation of just another moody artist
of just another sad internet poet.
I've been thinking a lot about the old internet lately. More so than real life, it was where I grew up. I am sad to see it die and be infiltrated by the sort of people who we tried to escape by being online. I wonder how many young and vulnerable artists have already been discouraged or chased away by the obsession with perfection and the development of "cringe culture". I think the weird kids out there should invent something even better than the internet and keep it away from the prying hands of corporations and boring people.

MP3 guaranteed

I tore a hole into the darkness,
Found the presents, gonna regret this.
No surprises, faking selfies,
Happy families, searching memories.

Painting photo’s in the cosmos,
Letting go of red balloons.
Coming soon to your television room,
3D TV, dumb-watches, MP3 and digital zoom.

Whatever you tweet is not my concern.
Forward in time, mobile internet burns.
One last threshold ready to cross,
Sign your name on the dot, dot, dot.
