I must accept—
sunshine never shines the same way twice.

I learned long ago
some cuts
are meant to scar

Tarnished pieces
of sunshine,
Sunshine.

Epilogue
__

Oh, but darling,
You'll always be a guiding light—
Rotating star, a burning warmth
It's alright.
You'll always be sunshine,
Sunshine

When I was small
I wrote a song.
It was as wild
As it was long.

I did not know
How to write words
And so I sang
With the morning birds.

Now I am grown,
I am depressed.
I write long things
Just to impress.

I do not sing,
I only sigh.
When I was small
I was alive.

It took me seven years
to realise
the words in my mind
were too deep for
my mouth to dig up
I thought it was easier
to open my skin
and let the truth
pour down my arms

It took me seven years
to realise
nobody should be allowed
to touch parts
of your home
or hold pieces
of your heart
that you don't yet understand

It took me seven years
to realise
I will wear these scars
forever
I'll carry them
through every smile
every kiss
every concerned gaze
I'll carry them
to my grave

It took me seven years
to realise
the pain carved
into the walls
of my castle
etchings of
attempting to disappear
are not a story of weakness
but a tale of
how I survived

cosmo naught
the angel on my shoulder
picked up smoking,
the devil on the other
took up yoga—

they don't know
how much they have
in common.

My mom
Is music
watching Gilmore girls with takeout thai food
and comfort

My Dad
Is loudness
Uncontrollable anger
And reluctant love

My cat
Is laying in bed with me when I cry
Stealing my food
And making me laugh even when I don't want to

My friend
Is bubbles
Singing let it go as loud as we can at 2am
And walking around downtown super fast as we talk

My extended family
Is 13 hour plane rides
Friday night dinners
And having ice cream on the balcony
Maybe it doesn't make sense to you, but it makes perfect sense to me

15, and can't find someone to love me.
15, and all my friends are dating.
15, and love is all I see.
15, and i'm just waiting.
It's like boys my age don't want me.

Sunrise, coffee, holding hands,
birds having conversations,
life is grand.

Sitting here peacefully,
just another day.

Mountains were moved for it to feel this way.

Tears were shed,
blood was bled,
pain and egos overcome.

Time heals all great or small,
and if we try maybe we'll find love.

Stars and moonlight,
everything feels right.
Sitting here peacefully,
just another night.

Finally, feels right
Finally, peaceful
Finally, love
Finally.

Because the world is round
the wind is high
And the sky is blue
I cry
Sometimes we cry just because

Some people listen to hear,
and some listen to respond.

Some people talk to be heard,
and some talk because they can’t stand the silence.
Meaningless meaningful conversations

When I go to the airport
I always wear a funny shirt
Because waiting in line is so dull
And I want to make someone smile
Maybe get a laugh
Maybe make a friend
Maybe make a day
Because why not?

You grab my hands in yours

Reminding me I'm special

You slip bracelets on my wrists

Reminding me you're here

You paint my nails black

Reminding me that you care

You spray me with your cologne

A good luck charm for my test

I pass with flying colors

And love you more than the rest

My friend, you are so special

I want to keep you close

If I lost you as well

It would hurt more than most

Please stay my friend forever

From my window I see
branches dripping
gray fog.
I face a long day
heaving heavy boards,
testing
my brittle back,
glasses wet
with sweat,
porcupine fingers
bristling splinters,
shaping lumber
with a clear heart.

Carpenter, carpenter, what do you say?
Cut wood all day,
bring home the pay:
a pocketful of sawdust.

With strange joy
I can't wait
to begin.

Perhaps if you stopped worshiping
the wise words of another,
you might, in fact, uncover
a wisdom within
yourself.
