The ultimate Dragon Poem and a childhood favourite of mine which still sends shivers to this day... Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honahlee Little Jackie paper loved that rascal puff And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff oh Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honahlee Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honahlee Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail Jackie kept a lookout perched on puff's gigantic tail Noble kings and princes would bow whene'er they came Pirate ships would lower their flag when puff roared out his name oh Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honahlee Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honahlee A dragon lives forever but not so little boys Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys One grey night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more And puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane Without his life-long friend, puff could not be brave So Puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave oh Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honahlee Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honahlee

Up and lead the dance of Fate! Lift the song that mortals hate! Tell what rights are ours on earth, Over all of human birth. Swift of foot to avenge are we! He whose hands are clean and pure, Naught our wrath to dread hath he; Calm his cloudless days endure. But the man that seeks to hide Like him (1), his gore-bedewèd hands, Witnesses to them that died, The blood avengers at his side, The Furies' troop forever stands. O'er our victim come begin! Come, the incantation sing, Frantic all and maddening, To the heart a brand of fire, The Furies' hymn, That which claims the senses dim, Tuneless to the gentle lyre, Withering the soul within. The pride of all of human birth, All glorious in the eye of day, Dishonored slowly melts away, Trod down and trampled to the earth, Whene'er our dark-stoled troop advances, Whene'er our feet lead on the dismal dances. For light our footsteps are, And perfect is our might, Awful remembrances of guilt and crime, Implacable to mortal prayer, Far from the gods, unhonored, and heaven's light, We hold our voiceless dwellings dread, All unapproached by living or by dead. What mortal feels not awe, Nor trembles at our name, Hearing our fate-appointed power sublime, Fixed by the eternal law. For old our office, and our fame, Might never yet of its due honors fail, Though 'neath the earth our realm in unsunned regions pale.

Song Of The Furies
When he, who, from the scourge of wrong, Aroused the Hebrew tribes to fly, Saw the fair region, promised long, And bowed him on the hills to die; God made his grave, to men unknown, Where Moab's rocks a vale infold, And laid the aged seer alone To slumber while the world grows old. Thus still, whene'er the good and just Close the dim eye on life and pain, Heaven watches o'er their sleeping dust Till the pure spirit comes again. Though nameless, trampled, and forgot, His servant's humble ashes lie, Yet God has marked and sealed the spot, To call its inmate to the sky.

No Man Knoweth His Sepulchre
A part, immutable, unseen, Being, before itself had been, Became. Like dew a triple queen Shone as the void uncovered: The silence of deep height was drawn A veil across the silver dawn On holy wings that hovered. The music of three thoughts became The beauty, that is one white flame, The justice that surpasses shame, The victory, the splendour, The sacred fountain that is whirled From depths beyond that older world A new world to engender. The kingdom is extended. Night Dwells, and I contemplate the sight That is not seeing, but the light That secretly is kindled, Though oft-time its most holy fire Lacks oil, whene'er my own Desire Before desire has dwindled. I see the thin web binding me With thirteen cords of unity Toward the calm centre of the sea. (O thou supernal mother!) The triple light my path divides To twain and fifty sudden sides Each perfect as each other. Now backwards, inwards still my mind Must track the intangible and blind, And seeking, shall securely find Hidden in secret places Fresh feasts for every soul that strives, New life for many mystic lives, And strange new forms and faces. My mind still searches, and attains By many days and many pains To That which Is and Was and reigns Shadowed in four and ten; And loses self in sacred lands, And cries and quickens, and understands Beyond the first Amen.

The Quest
All-Conquering Death! by thy resistless pow’r, Hope’s tow’ring plumage falls to rise no more! Of scenes terrestrial how the glories fly, Forget their splendors, and submit to die! Who ere escap’d thee, but the saint of old Beyond the flood in sacred annals told, And the great sage, whom fiery coursers drew To heav’n’s bright portals from Elisha’s view; Wond’ring he gaz’d at the refulgent car, Then snatch’d the mantle floating on the air. From Death these only could exemption boast, And without dying gain’d th’ immortal coast. Not falling millions sate the tyrant’s mind, Nor can the victor’s progress be confin’d. But cease thy strife with Death, fond Nature, cease: He leads the virtuous to the realms of peace; His to conduct to the immortal plains, Where heav’n’s Supreme in bliss and glory reigns. There sits, illustrious Sir, thy beauteous spouse; A gem-blaz’d circle beaming on her brows. Hail’d with acclaim among the heav’nly choirs, Her soul new-kindling with seraphic fires, To notes divine she tunes the vocal strings, While heav’n’s high concave with the music rings. Virtue’s rewards can mortal pencil paint? No—all descriptive arts, and eloquence are faint; Nor canst thou, Oliver, assent refuse To heav’nly tidings from the Afric muse. As soon may change thy laws, eternal fate, As the saint miss the glories I relate; Or her Benevolence forgotten lie, Which wip’d the trick’ling tear from Misry’s eye. Whene’er the adverse winds were known to blow, When loss to loss ensu’d, and woe to woe, Calm and serene beneath her father’s hand She sat resign’d to the divine command. No longer then, great Sir, her death deplore, And let us hear the mournful sigh no more, Restrain the sorrow streaming from thine eye, Be all thy future moments crown’d with joy! Nor let thy wishes be to earth confin’d, But soaring high pursue th’ unbodied mind. Forgive the muse, forgive th’ advent’rous lays, That fain thy soul to heav’nly scenes would raise.

When by my solitary hearth I sit, And hateful thoughts enwrap my soul in gloom; When no fair dreams before my "mind's eye" flit, And the bare heath of life presents no bloom; Sweet Hope, ethereal balm upon me shed, And wave thy silver pinions o'er my head! Whene'er I wander, at the fall of night, Where woven boughs shut out the moon's bright ray, Should sad Despondency my musings fright, And frown, to drive fair Cheerfulness away, Peep with the moonbeams through the leafy roof, And keep that fiend Despondence far aloof! Should Disappointment, parent of Despair, Strive for her son to seize my careless heart; When, like a cloud, he sits upon the air, Preparing on his spell-bound prey to dart: Chase him away, sweet Hope, with visage bright, And fright him as the morning frightens night! Whene'er the fate of those I hold most dear Tells to my fearful breast a tale of sorrow, O bright-eyed Hope, my morbidfancy cheer; Let me awhile thy sweetest comforts borrow: Thy heaven-born radiance around me shed, And wave thy silver pinions o'er my head! Should e'er unhappy love my ***** pain, From cruel parents, or relentless fair; O let me think it is not quite in vain To sigh out sonnets to the midnight air! Sweet Hope, ethereal balm upon me shed, And wave thy silver pinions o'er my head! In the long vista of the years to roll, Let me not see our country's honour fade: O let me see our land retain her soul, Her pride, her freedom; and not freedom's shade. From thy bright eyes unusual brightness shed--- Beneath thy pinions canopy my head! Let me not see the patriot's high bequest, Great Liberty! how great in plain attire! With the base purple of a court oppress'd, Bowing her head, and ready to expire: But let me see thee stoop from heaven on wings That fill the skies with silver glitterings! And as, in sparkling majesty, a star Gilds the bright summit of some gloomy cloud; Brightening the half veil'd face of heaven afar: So, when dark thoughts my boding spirit shroud, Sweet Hope, celestial influence round me shed, Waving thy silver pinions o'er my head!

I won't come back To do my deeds and bits. I won't return To finish what I've started. I shan't be here Whene'er you come looking. I'll be elsewhere, Long time afore departed. There's no way back, alas! This road knows only one direction. I cannot turn away, I cannot linger... And Fate itself seems deaf to my objections. 3 June 2014

At the Doorstep
You say you love, and yet your eye No symptom of that love conveys, You say you love, yet know not why, Your cheek no sign of love betrays. Ah! did that breast with ardour glow, With me alone it joy could know, Or feel with me the listless woe, Which racks my heart when far from thee. Whene’er we meet my blushes rise, And mantle through my purpled cheek, But yet no blush to mine replies, Nor e’en your eyes your love bespeak. Your voice alone declares your flame, And though so sweet it breathes my name, Our passions still are not the same; Alas! you cannot love like me. For e’en your lip seems steep’d in snow, And though so oft it meets my kiss, It burns with no responsive glow, Nor melts like mine in dewy bliss. Ah! what are words to love like mine, Though uttered by a voice like thine, I still in murmurs must repine, And think that love can ne’er be true, Which meets me with no joyous sign, Without a sigh which bids adieu; How different is my love from thine, How keen my grief when leaving you. Your image fills my anxious breast, Till day declines adown the West, And when at night, I sink to rest, In dreams your fancied form I view. ’Tis then your breast, no longer cold, With equal ardour seems to burn, While close your arms around me fold, Your lips my kiss with warmth return. Ah! would these joyous moments last; Vain HOPE! the gay delusion’s past, That voice!—ah! no, ’tis but the blast, Which echoes through the neighbouring grove. But when awake, your lips I seek, And clasp enraptur’d all your charms, So chill’s the pressure of your cheek, I fold a statue in my arms. If thus, when to my heart embrac’d, No pleasure in your eyes is trac’d, You may be prudent, fair, and chaste, But ah! my girl, you do not love.

Whene’er I view those lips of thine, Their hue invites my fervent kiss; Yet, I forego that bliss divine, Alas! it were—unhallow’d bliss. Whene’er I dream of that pure breast, How could I dwell upon its snows! Yet, is the daring wish represt, For that,—would banish its repose. A glance from thy soul-searching eye Can raise with hope, depress with fear; Yet, I conceal my love,—and why? I would not force a painful tear. I ne’er have told my love, yet thou Hast seen my ardent flame too well; And shall I plead my passion now, To make thy bosom’s heaven a hell? No! for thou never canst be mine, United by the priest’s decree: By any ties but those divine, Mine, my belov’d, thou ne’er shalt be. Then let the secret fire consume, Let it consume, thou shalt not know: With joy I court a certain doom, Rather than spread its guilty glow. I will not ease my tortur’d heart, By driving dove-ey’d peace from thine; Rather than such a sting impart, Each thought presumptuous I resign. Yes! yield those lips, for which I’d brave More than I here shall dare to tell; Thy innocence and mine to save,— I bid thee now a last farewell. Yes! yield that breast, to seek despair And hope no more thy soft embrace; Which to obtain, my soul would dare, All, all reproach, but thy disgrace. At least from guilt shall thou be free, No matron shall thy shame reprove; Though cureless pangs may prey on me, No martyr shall thou be to love.

A wolf left out in the cold, fed the last scraps, no matter how old. he could be free... perhaps. one day a she wolf wandered past, green eyes that mesmerized, he hoped different from the last. it was her beauty he realized. wolfia turned to be her name, his heart of ice soon burned, and wished her harness his flame, he'd be there, whene'er she'd turn. "if you were the moon, i'd howl for ye." he said with passion in his voice. she turned her head away from he forget his flame... he had no choice. he then wandered, with heavy heart, past dragon, fox, and fire the same, nothing that he passed did start, come even close to feeding his flame. he wandered and then yet he saw her, near another, locked in his flame. the first wolf watched, and almost sure, she's like the others, just the same. he knew this wolf would be no good, the first wolf watched with an icy chest, he knew, intervene, its what he should, but found that nature did the rest. He wished to aid her, he truly did, he'd care for her, no matter what, the tears on her face, he wished to rid, but he felt only inside his twisted gut. wolfia never saw the pain he felt not the wounds, the howls or cries not the crimson blows she dealt. he hid it well beneath his lies. the wolf by which went many a name alexei, lucian, wolfffay too, felt he should forget his flame. the act of which, he'd never do. he vowed to watch her, care for she, love and cherish what all they had, hoping for just what might be, he'd be there for her, the good and the bad.

The Joys and Pains of Unrequited Love Of all my years of life I’ve had one dream, that one like you, with visage radiant, would grace me with your captivating smile. Your presence carries with it such a joy, your voice, elixir for my weary soul. I wish to drown in this unbridled love. Oh how I wish you would return my love! I wish to wake up from this lucid dream, which both elates and haunts my longing soul. I wake each morn with sadness radiant, because I long to share with you the joy I feel whene’er I’m graced by your sweet smile. Oh how your simple presence makes me smile! As I wait for reciprocated love, I strive to be content and take my joy in living for this fantasy, this dream. For when I see your light so radiant, it kindles life to flames within my soul. Oh how my face betrays my troubled soul! You see the pleasant contour of my smile, and ne’er it fails to shine so radiant, as I am plagued by unrequited love. One day I’ll make reality from dream, And soar with you in long deserved joy. Oh how I long to share with you my joy! Just like an anchor weighing on my soul, it serves to power this unending dream. I wish to show the pain behind my smile, from holding in this life-affirming love while gazing at your form, so radiant. Oh hear my words fair goddess, radiant! One day, I will turn sadness into joy, as I confess to you my boundless love and intertwine with yours, my bursting soul. Until that day, contented with your smile, I will but wait for you within my dream. How radiant, your bright and piercing soul. Such joy that I will take within your smile. My love, until we meet again… in dream.

A rocking chair sits On the porch Of a house On the corner of ol’ Honey Lane. It looks over fields of lavender stems And rocks with the wind and the rain. I grew up walking past it, On ol’ Honey Lane, And would sometimes drop by for a swing. I brought books and some snacks, Played with dollies and jacks, This poor rocker withstood everything. I grew a bit older but kept coming back To my rocker on ol’ Honey Lane. I’d bring it my sorrows and rock til the morrow, Forgetting my worries and pain. The gentle caressing of lavender lullabies Scattered the clouds of grey. And whene’er I was lonely, I knew that only My rocker could brighten my day. Still older I grew and soon began dreaming Of cities more couth and refined. So I hopped on a plane, fled my ol' Honey Lane And left my poor rocker behind. I traded my jeans for a dazzling dress, And dollies for wine and pearls. But nothing within could dare to trade in
The mem’ry of that young, little girl. The girl who spent hours watching lavender fields, On the corner of ol’ Honey Lane. I knew without haste, there was no time to waste, I had to go find her again. So back home I flew, to see family and friends, To smell lavender waft through the air. I ran to the porch of the old corner house, And saw my dear old rocking chair. I hopped on it’s seat, kicked my feet off the ground, And remembered the wind and the rain. As the sun went to sleep in the lavender fields, So I slept on my rocker On ol’ Honey Lane. - p. winter

You are always there for me. You lift me up whene'er I need. Your kindness spreads through my bones, Reaching in and peeling back the facade. Within your loving grasp, I'm calm. Your strong arms hold me fast. Truly I am free at last, Holding on until my last breath To you, my life support, my friend. The warm red glow of peaceful balm. Everybody needs somebody like you...

Somebody Like You
Tonight the poltergeists will come     And rip you out of bed, And pound your walls, and drum your door,     And hammer in your head, And leave you writhing still alive,     Though rather you'd be dead. But fear not these; they merely prank;     Instead the demon fear That frightens away the poltergeists     Whene'er it doth appear, And screams a scream that makes to bleed      A stream each mangled ear. It comes for you, your soul to possess;     And I do sadly tell, You have no chance yourself to save;     So, sleep, and sleep you well— Enjoy another tender dream     Before you're dragged to Hell. O.O

A Lullaby
The vast sapphire nebulae of space, All rising o’er in zeniths of sweet dreams, Feed all the leas and all the murm’rous streams With folds on cloudy folds of moonbeam rays. Whene’er I look within the lake’s clear face, I see each high aurora, which then gleams, Caroused with Heaven’s soft and dewy beams, Which flicker in a thick and splendid haze. I see the moon, upon the whole world gaze And all the stars which skies with their souls trace, Glide, trembling in some waters’ ebbing grace With some unearthly music, so it seems. Oh, as I sit before the pale light Of stars, I sigh and dream of sacred bliss, And tuck myself in Heaven’s chrysalis, I feel as if such place is more than night…

Written On a Mystic Night
Shall I compare thee to all the seasons? To the flare of autumn, to kiss of spring I will give thee the three great, sole reasons Why shan’t I compare thee to anything Thine heart is too warm to winter’s compare Thy skin is pale unlike summer’s skin, bright Thine hair is black unlike the autumn flare Thine imperial air much for spring’s light Thy peace and grace too light for winter’s storm Though thou art faint and dark, thou art most warm Thou art too cool for summer’s blazing clime Too hot for cold winter’s dun atmosphere Thine locks, most fair never wither in time Like bright autumn when winter does appear Thy voice whene’er you speak to me is soft Unlike most sharp the winds by winter’s sway Unlike the hum of heat o’er skies aloft Within melting clime of each summer day Thy bright and fair beauty, bright glimmering Ne’er wilts away like do the tides of spring Thou art too heavy in mind and in wit To be compared to the soft breeze in spring And what is good in bright autumn when it Lies beneath winter’s cold breath, withering And of what good is there to see in gray Of snows and ice that dance like sprites about And of what good is there to see or say Of all seasons who come and pass in, out Thou art all in all for truest respect In thine own way, in truest sense, perfect

Shall I Compare Thee To All the Seasons?
If the eyes are truly windows to the soul, Looking into yours would lift up one's spirit. But to gaze in mine would surely take a toll; Upon innocence, my troubles would be writ. I don't mean to instill any sort of fear, Or any discomfort, which could start to grow. I just want to preserve you as you appear, The purity you have, I lost long ago. Time seems to melt away whene'er I'm with you, In your arms is where I feel that I belong. To show that I care, there's nothing I'd not do, I will not be convinced that this could be wrong. You are more amazing than I can dream of, I just want to be someone who you can love.

Paradox Lost May God forgive me For all the sins that I committed And could Satan forget me For all the ones I didn't When I had the opportunity. Paradox Regained Heaven shades to earth Whene'er my eyes are closing. Then falls away to hell As soon as they are open. Wi' heaven shut an' hell still open Faith is blind but sin's still hoping.

Unco Wadna
Don't tell him the secret, he'll run away screaming. Don't tell her the story, she won't really care. But tell me the truth, for I know you've been dreaming to tell why you're hurting; you know I'll be there. Let not just law guide you, for justice is blind. The lady of scales with foggy eyes stares. But hold out your hand (and open your mind) together we'll stumble; you know I'll be there. Watch out for hatred, for hatred brings pain. Seek naught of hatred -in stoney heart lairs. Love is the cure, love might keep you sane, so I love you and hold you; you know I'll be there. And when darkness finds you please say you'll be strong. The darkness is needed, for to light it's pair. I know that it's hard when you try to hold on, but let my love shield you, you know I'll be there. You know I am Human, you know I have fault. I'll try hard to solve all your problems with prayer. I'll be reallistic, no grand canyon vault, but whene'er you need me Just call- I'll be there.

My Own Lost Wisdom
Here today and gone tomorrow, True of love and joy and sorrow. Frost said gold lasts but a day... So does work, and so does play. Here today and gone tomorrow, True of anger, pain and horror. Savor golden days whene'er they come; Remember them when they are gone.

Ephemerality
Rare is that new friend who rivals every old; In constancy and grace--He surely "broke the mold." Gentle nature, gentle strength:  In you the two are one; "Common" we have banish'd from this path our true words run. Turn not away, dear friend, to yield to humbl'd blush, For we're recounting virtues now, and 'tis not a thing to rush. Of honesty, and modesty, and patience, we do tell, These are values none of us could claim to know as well. A willing ear who listens well to ev'n small complaints, And yet will sing the same refrain unburden'd by constraints. Those quiet acts of kindness are the works that fill your day, And we delight to follow them, whene'er we've lost our way. So let us count our blessings then--for bless'd is what we are, To have your light, so shining here, among us near and far. Your friends, Mike and Kelly

To Gretchen
Freedom is your legacy, Paid for with your precious life, Far from home and family, In wars both wise and unwise. I walk in light thanks to you, Teach, write, speak, think without fear, And our flag flies proud and true, Beacon of hope through the years. I stand proudly for our flag, Hand over heart as I sing, Our Anthem whene’r it plays, As my voice cracks and eyes tear. Emotions run high for me, Not from empty foolish pride, But because in her I see, Your most poignant sacrifice. Freedom comes not from its wish, Nor peace from prayers on their own, They come from soldiers like you, Who selflessly gave their all. I carry you in my heart, Every day of every year, The debt I owe you cannot, Be repaid in words or tears. Rest in peace, beloved dead, May God grant you honors due, Today I will fly our flag, And in it always see you.

Remembering Our Fallen on Memorial Day
I miss you meddling at my door Whene'er my head ties up a knot My head resting on your lap so soft With you giving me a smiling nod I fail to reach your heeding hand and be with you again and again I fail and fail and fail and fail, destined not to be the same again.
