Everytime I'd think of you
I'd send a memory to the sea
Riding on a paper boat
To somehow bring you back to me

Time and time again
I'd send dozens and dozens more
Till one day I found all my paper boats
Washed up on the shore

While I was sending you paper boats
A storm had settled in
Brewing and stirring the ocean depths
Taking my boats I sent within

My paper boats never reached you
My paper boats came back to me
My memories are now upon the shore
Haunting me endlessly.

Recurring nightmare;
I bleed from the mouth and you
slowly disappear.

Love manipulates
as formless desperation
seeking an answer.
I say, “I love you.”
Healing the old scars to pave
way for the new ones.

I say, “I’m leaving.”
Opening the new wound to
breathe finality.

A suicide king,
too heartless for sadism
but once was human.

I once was thoughtful,
I believe in two heavens
that burn like candles.

Slowly, dull, gently.
I believe in two heavens,
laying down awake.

They say we have the right to marry
So we should be happy,
They ignorantly ask
Isn’t that enough?

But they don’t understand
The strange fear
Of holding your partners hand in public,
The looks from mothers
As they rush their kids past
Shielding them from our love.

They don’t understand being afraid
Of telling your loved ones
About the one you love,
Hiding it away
As if it is wrong.

They don’t understand
The way the comfort of each others arms
When spending time alone
Vanishes as soon as we step outside.

They don’t understand
The awkward pause in conversation
When mentioning your partners gender
As we see their face change
Along with their mindset.

They don’t understand
The stereotypes we face
Being told we don’t look gay
So it couldn’t possibly be true,
But what does gay look like?

They don’t understand
The denial their family goes through
Saying hurtful things,
Like “it’s a phase”
Because they can’t accept the reality.

They don’t understand
Having to come out
Not just once
But almost daily
To each new person we meet
And the way that each time
It doesn’t get easier to say.

They don’t understand
How much it hurts,
Even the very toughest of us
Have at one point
Struggled greatly
And fought their own feelings.

They don’t understand
The society that they have created for us,
One where we have to celebrate
Our right to marry
When it’s been given freely
To others for years.

They don’t understand
Because they are not us.
Day after day
Dusk unto dusk
Foolish fool, you make flush
Burst into a blush
Take away my crutch
Let me catch your wave today...
Tomorrow, don't leave me on sorrow and uncertainties
I need to ride that bright white wave eternally
Quick one
My heart breaks at the sight of your face
A hearth's burning stake pierced through my body
Realizing that it was from your mouth it did originate
I let the stake's embers burn and eat me wholly.
For it is my happiness to just see and not own your grace.
You're the angel that smote my entire existence
Because you represent the wrath of God on people like me.
I wrote this a year ago (August 9 2015) and only got to share it now.

Woke with the sting of regret, it’s been too long since I fell,
I missed the rush of fresh air, I missed the taste of the smell,
I was in love with the tightrope, the stained glass of her eyes,
Bowed by the weight of surrender, I settled for compromise,
Watching those false idols dance, turning wolves into sheep,
As we played coy with the monsters that sang us to sleep,
I had a million places to go, and so much I’d hoped to say,
But I wasted another tomorrow thinking about yesterday,
And those sticky situations where we all came unglued,
While I daydreamed a sky that wouldn’t mirror my mood,
A slow dance with routine, and every face looks the same,
I was choking to death on the stale taste of my name,
So I started sanding sharp edges, hoping that I might fit in,
I spent a year writing my ending, so I could finally begin,
Dusting off open road acrobatics, I twisted south by the sea,
Searching for the rotting remains of who I thought I should be,
But it was just another battle that I lost to the war,
The same wrecking ball feet with new roads to explore,
Nothing quite felt right, my fingertips became springs,
I’d lost the girl to save the world, and other foolish things,
It was my first last-ditch effort, my best second guess,
I painted myself into a corner of the picture of success,
Fifteen-hundred miles, and still felt so far out of reach,
Until late one night my phone rang as I walked along the beach,
I told my story to the old man as he listened patiently,
When I finished, he calmly asked me to turn and face the sea,
He said, “The ocean is the journey, the sum of all you gave,
Do not lose perspective; this is but a single wave.”
I drove home that night and slept for the first time in half a week,
And when I awoke, the path before me didn’t feel quite so bleak,
I realized there’s no shame in letting someone catch us if we fall,
And that being lost is different than being nowhere at all,
I learned that each story is a lesson, not merely a scar,
And that all we have left is not the same as everything we are.

gender identity can be
one of the hardest things to fight
because the only thing you can do
is lean on what you think
               and hope that it's right

A square of paper, plain as ****** snow.
A fold, a crease, potential now began.
Life stands anew, now given room to grow,
as something forms beneath the will of man.

Wings skyward seek and, touching brightest blue,
take flight to traverse freedom’s great unknown.
Wherever life’s desires to roam hold true
a paper bird best shows how hope is sown.

Yet now my flock, one thousand strong, is made,
so many scraps of paper now transformed,
I regret the theft of hope now grayed,
forgotten as the lost potential stormed.

Now hope and freedom are but empty words
I lay before a flock of lifeless birds.
This is a poem to celebrate the completion of my One Thousand Cranes project (should be fairly self explanatory). I particularly enjoyed the structure of the sonnet, I'd never employed it before and it gave me the pleasant feeling of solving a puzzle while writing. I hope you enjoyed it.

Edit 2/25/20: I believe sonnets are best when read aloud, so I'm making recordings of some of my favorites. If you would like, below is an address of a spoken reading by yours truly. Thank you.
