The Drums Of War
the drums of war never
seem to
cease
hence why the world cannot find
a lasting
peace

in every corner of the globe
the people ask the same
question
is it necessary for yet
another warring
session

the drums
reverberate
the drums
won't abate
the drums
constantly beating
the drums
not retreating

and so the drums of war
stay
thereby negating that peaceful

war is a maddness
causing much too much saddness
let saneness prevail
in his hands
he held a chunk of rock
within it lay
a diamond of beauty
he pined to extract
her from the ore
for he so wanted
to see her perfections
yet she'd not be
cajoled
out of her mother load's
material

he pondered
over the gem
so exquisite
how he yearned
to sense
her facets gleaming
exclusively for him
but she was embedded
and unreachable
there she'd stay in the
rough mantle's ore
ne'er could she be
his to embrace

he'd not feel her heart
palpating along side him
all hopes were dashed
his longing would remain
the lovely diamond
not releasing out of the
rock's permanent casing

Rondeau

A Rondeau is a French form, 15 lines long, consisting of three stanzas: a quintet, a quatrain, and a sestet with a rhyme scheme as follows: aabba aabR aabbaR. Lines 9 and 15 are short - a refrain (R) consisting of a phrase taken from line one. The other lines are longer (but all of the same metrical length).

a lady in central Manchester gave him an address
stating that a felon in Soho had the crown of queen Bess

high and low in the streets of Soho he did look
to find this most stealthiest pilfering crook
by a measure of luck he found him sitting on a park bench
talking to a criminal associate named Roger Dench

the inspector siezed the felon and cuffed his hands
saying that looting wouldn't be tolerated on British lands
at Scotland Yard the crook was grilled for information
about the queen's crown which was pinched without hestitaion

some three days later he fronted an Old Bailey judge
who sentenced him to sixteen years of gaol drudge
overjoyed was the queen to have her crown back
whereupon she wore it around the Ascot Race track

chief inspector Jones was knighted by good queen Bess
cause he'd been a fine detective of profess
