Regrets and mistakes
niamh Jun 2015
I will not let the shadows
Of past mistakes and regrets
Cast a blight upon my life.

Each one of them has contributed to the person I am today,
But none of them define me.

No poet
niamh Jun 2015
He's no poet.
His words are brash
And his actions are blunt.
He sees blocks of colour
Without varying shades.
He worships at altars of science
Rather than mother nature.
He shys away from
Overwhelming emotion
And hides behind
Facts and figures.
He's not a hearts and flowers
Kind of man
More spleen and moss

The Naked Poet
niamh Jun 2015
He stands before you
Naked
Clothed only in emotion
He stripped back everything
So you could better see
The pulse in his neck
And watch as his chest rises and falls with wondrous breath.
He comes armed with a pen .
Don't try to clothe him.
He takes comfort from being
Accepted as he is.
He may be naked but he is not cold.
Stripped back, he is a poet

Through the Ages
niamh Jun 2015
I never got to practice
So you'll have to forgive
My mistakes.
I would love to get it perfect
But I don't get any more takes.

I never knew what it was to love
Til I held you in my arms
And if it were left up to me
You never would know harm.

I know that there'll be times
When we argue like we've never argued before
But look around you sweetheart.
No-one could love you more.

And as you grow, I'll do my best
To steer you in the right direction
But go easy on me gorgeous girl,
My name is not perfection.

When you have children of your own
And I'm their doting gran
I'll tell you that you're doing great,
I'll be your biggest fan.

And when I'm lying on my death bed
And you still make me smile,
Know that it's not goodbye forever,
But only a little while
Another poem for my beautiful girls

Mighty Oaks
niamh Jun 2015
They are the gnarled old men of the woods,
Standing sentry over magical lands.
Children swing from their arms
And lovers embrace at their feet.
Families gather in their shadows
To break bread and relax
And solitary figures lean against them
Taking strength from their strength.
They are the gnarled old men of the woods,
Standing sentry over magical lands.
We owe them our lives

Her trike
niamh Jun 2015
A once-loved trike
Sits alone in a corner of the garden.
A basket full
Of rotting flowers, long forgotten.
Pedals unused
Yielding to rust,
A child, slightly older,
No longer fussed
Caught sight of my daughters first trike languishing in the garden & it hit me that she's too big for it now. Growing up too fast :(

Sand
niamh Jun 2015
I am but a grain of sand
On an expanse of shore.
Insignificant
Infinitesimal
Inconsequential
Irrelevant

But if I were to leave
The whole shoreline would change.
Perhaps in no major way
No astounding way
No amazing way

But it would change

The gestation of a poem
niamh Jun 2015
An idea conceived in an intense moment of beauty or pain.
A moment of perfect clarity.
We turn our brains to wombs,
To nurture it, protect it,
Know it and love it.
We feed it emotion
And it grows stronger.
When the time is right
We give birth to it
Through tears sweat and blood
Or pure tranquility.
And we love it,
On our own or alongside others.
For these are our babies

These eggshells aren't for walking on
I'm a big girl with a heart
Be honest, tell it like it is
Though it might tear me apart.

Be honest. Never hem and haw,
Be honest, not aloof
Be honest as I'm crying,
Be honest. Tell the truth.

Just please don't beat around the bush,
I'll carry on when you are gone,
The eggshells may be broken
But they're not for walking on.

Dangerous waters
niamh Jun 2015
Watch out for the sharks.
They've evolved behind closed doors
And walk the streets
Without you even noticing.
Their killer teeth hide
Behind a dentist's *******
And their fins are hidden
Under designer threads.
They learnt from the wolf
Who has hung up his
Woollen overcoat
And passed the baton.
Watch out for sharks
They're the consumate liars
Who believe their own crap
Watch out for sharks
We're just little fish
In a dangerous pond

Here We Lie
niamh Jun 2015
Here I lie
Stripped bare of makeup
Here I lie
With morning breath
(If thats not insulting to morning)
Here I lie
In a shapeless nightshirt
Here I lie
With hair like
I've been elctrocuted

And there you lie
Looking at me the way a child looks at sweets

And deliver a solliloquy
Of self-judged epic propotions.
I let the curtain fall
And wait, while the tension

And await the
Adulation
Adoration
Applause
As i bow like a swan
To the thunderous sound of

What you see
niamh Jun 2015
What do you see when you look at me?
A woman with 'a tight ***' only fit for your grubby leers?
What do you see when you look at me?
A secretary you can ask 'what are you wearing?'
What do you see when you look at me?
Normal sized woman approaching chubby?
What do you see when you look at me?
Someone who would lay down her life for her kids?
What do you see when you look at me?
Someone who 'teases' just because she chats to you in the bar?
What do you see when you look at me?
A woman with big eyes haunted by her history?
What do you see when you look at me?
A 'grade-a *****' just because I don't make friends easily?
What do you see when you look at me?
Look at me
Really look at me
See me
All the quotes are things people have actually said to me !

The majestic mountains
Curve gently
To meet the sea.
She laps at their feet
In a loving gesture
Reminding them, if she chose
She could bring them to their knees
And would swallow them
Without a second thought.
Poor majestic mountains.

uphill
niamh Jun 2015
Beyond the horizon
an orange glow beckons me forward.
The path behind me
is dark and ragged
and I've been hurt more times
than I care to admit
and cried rivers
which flowed alongside me.
Sometimes I feel like I'm
struggling against the wind
and walking for hours
without moving an inch.
The path is mostly uphill
and my energy is sapped,
but I keep moving.

What lies beyond the horizon?
I simply do not know.
But I know I will get there

eventually
