My Shoebox of Scraps
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
A writer writes…
so that’s what I do.

Not that I must
But it’s the right thing to do.

It’s not always easy
to lay down a line
on a small scrap of paper
that’s so hard to find.

Expressive nouns and passionate verbs
they assault my brain and
take me away.

There’s no way to dictate them
out on a page.
So I write them all down
any place that I can.

While at the bar,
a napkin will do.
Or in my car,
a matchbook or two.
A Post-It will get me by
in a pinch.
Or any other paper
I’m happy to find.

And into my shoebox
I tucked them away.

I laid them right there
for another day.

Occasionally I’d come back
to see what they say.
Reading them over
again and again.

Into my brain,
that's where they have gone.
Stuck in my mind
for a decade or more.

The shoebox is gone now
from so long ago…but
the memories still linger
inside my brain and
out to my fingers
they continue to flow.

I write them all down
and expand on those thoughts.
Remembering the memories
I once thought were lost.

An explosion of words
pouring out on the page.
These many little thoughts they
now have a stage.

The lasting memories
are now down in print.
The shoebox is gone
but the words are in ink.

Watching You
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
I’m sitting here
While you are sleeping...

Thinking…

How sweet it is
To watch you dreaming.
This is another scrap from the shoebox. Probably written down on a napkin in a bar years ago.

Spontaneous
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Where did all this come from?
Where did it all begin?
Don’t let me sit here wondering now
I don’t know where it eventually ends
I put the words down on the page
I let them simmer in the light of day
There’s nothing really stopping me when
I type them down to make them stay
I can’t let go of this little thread
It spins itself as I watch it fly
My fingers touch the hallowed page
The light goes on and I start to say
The things I’ve thought
The way they’re made
There’s nothing here that can’t be said
I won’t slow down or go around
It’s through the wall I step again
Did you see what I had to say?
Do you think there’s better way?
Let me know and I won’t deny
I caught you watching so you can’t pretend
I’m living the dream as you walk on by
I’m happy in this place we’ve never been
Writing for me is pretty much a spontaneous indulgence. Knowing how to stop having fun is impossible. Well, I do require sleep and sustenance. Still, I love weaving a poem as it comes into my head one line at a time. Sometimes there is a basic floorplan to follow. Other times it is a pure “stream of consciousness”. Either way it’s all spontaneous.

Tenacity
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Born in the tempest of a rising tide
In a whirlwind turning
At some place in some time
Testing the water
I look deep inside
The wind keeps on churning
There’s nowhere to hide

Never been down this path before
I’m lost in the hedgerows
On the stage of my mind
Caught in the menagerie
I’ll see what I want to see
Lost in the fantasy
I’ll walk with tenacity

I know what you said
That it’s all in my head but
I’m really that limber
With all things considered
I won’t be defined and I’ll never resign
I’ll just ride on the tide
Through the winds of my mind

Our Tree
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Such a lovely tree
Above you and me
Just over our heads
The canopy spreads
Beneath our feet
The roots reach out
To anchor this shady
And leafy retreat

We lay out our lunch
On an old checkered cloth
We break out the wine
And drink a few drops
The bread is from heaven
The cheese from the dell
Your whispers are water
My ears are the well

Blessed are you
For coming along
Here in the tree-line
Our time passes by
Your song is divine and
Your lips taste like wine
The bread and the cheese
Leave us hungry for more

We lay in the grass
We kiss and we laugh
There’s time to relax
And truly unwind
Our hearts beat a song
And our minds sing along
Under our tree
Is where we belong

We can play that game
Just swimming in the rain

Spirit
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Spirit comes to me
I’m tempted by her casual flare
Her thoughts spill over my rainbow
And wash away my every care

The scorching sands beneath our feet
Drift slowly by the thoughts we’ve shared
The story’s not completely wrote
Each passage has its special note

We while away the passing hours
The flowers bloom then fade away
Our time was bent beyond compare
The time we spent was meant to share

There is no place I’d rather be
No other muse I want to see
Her message was so very clear
Inside her spell there was no fear

The sands of time, they blow away
The rainbow’s fleeting  glow is gone
Each treasured moment passes by
The time was right, she had to fly

The Price Of A Question
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
I'm reposting this because I want to ask a question about rhyme. I'm wondering if there's a specific name for the type of rhyme taking place in the last two lines of the poem (e.g. steep and keep). I don't think this qualifies as an "internal rhyme" but what do I know? I just know I do it a lot and I'm wondering if there's a name for it. Thanks for any insight on this.

Rummaging around through a pile of scraps
I found a hat and an old pair of shoes.
A can of paint is always welcome.
I just need a brush and a sliver of canvas.
Here in my world I look for an answer
But first I need to know the question.
I’ll let it go by without a mention
And dance with my muse while you wait for a chance.
The cost of some magic can be very steep but
I’ll  pay the whole price and keep what I need.
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
I was trapped in your time and lost in your space
There was never a moment that we didn’t embrace
Our tears turned to laughter and then back to tears
Our fears led to silence in the waning of years
The moment got past us then slipped out of sight
The memories must last us, they’re all that we have
The bridge that we crossed was burned in the night
And the passion we lost chased us out past the light
We came to the crossroads where our souls they did part
Your face in the mirror defied a new start
I’m caught in the chaos of your lasting refrain
It was such a disaster, when we stepped off that train

Trapped
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
What is the question? Who did it ask?
Where is the moment most recently lapsed?
Time will tell and mend it around
Nothing can pass for a siren’s sound
What do we have when we see the light?
Memories we weave in the dead of night
Driven by the wind and the soaking rain
We’re lost on the page which should soon turn again
Scattered to the only habit we know
Measuring the trance without a glance
Trapped in the meaning
Caught on the stage
Time ticks away and we’re left in a state
All that we know is the vision we have so
We do what we can just to take a step back

Mystery
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Caught up in wondering what might come next
I can’t see your ending before it’s been read
Your riveting passages unfold into mystery
They twist me around as you fill in your history

The pages flash by, the story pretends
I’m oft led astray till I reach the end
As the tale unfolds then leads me inside
I can’t get away from the clues that you hide

Don’t spoil the show by revealing the plot
Just let me get lost in the words on your page
We both can arrive at the same destination
All I need is a good explanation

Let’s capture the facts and set them to spin
We’ll ride on the tide and feast from within
You’re food for my thought, I cannot deny so
I’ll read you to the end or at least I’ll try

Music In The Trees
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Cast  in the shadows of a waning moon
Carrying on to the arboreal stand
Wandering around for a tune to sing
Lost in the words we have not heard
Memories dance in a somber rain
Leaves on the trees sing a rustling song
Crafting a message in time unbound
Found in the tune that traps our soul
We listen for a moment to take it all in
Caught in the magic we choose to behold

Moonlight
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
“Silently, one by one, in the infinite meadows of heaven, Blossomed the lovely stars, the forget-me-nots of the angels.” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Light shimmers briefly across the stage.
I catch a glimpse of the shadows it makes.
Is there not something more to see?
I wonder just now why it happens to be that
I can’t see the stars
but I know that they’re there.
Tonight in the moonlight
they’re lost to the night.
Under the glow,
I kiss them goodbye
And walk down the path
that this warm light defines.

Mirror
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
“Did you ever wonder if the person in the puddle is real, and you're just a reflection of him?” – Bill Watterson

Lost in a moment of cast reflection
Stepping back and seeing the picture
A solemn face reaches out to greet me
I stare back in awe of this simple vision
The river has risen above the steeple
The backwater splashes all over my feet
I look for you now in the old tinted glass
You’re not really there but neither am I
We haunt each other in the timeless mirror
And deliver a glance as we take our chance
It’s about living freely, to that I attest
It’s nothing but a change we had to accept

Spring
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
“In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt.” Margaret Atwood*

Spring is here
The awaking commences
Marching green explodes into life
Buds transform into leaves on the trees
Flowers explode across the timeless stage
There’s just enough time to plant what we need
Sprinkles rain down on this hallowed ground
Sprouts run up from the roots to play
The sun tickles life from the wind and the rain
Across the field the purchase is made
Grazing is easy on the tundra in Spring
We’re lost in the movement of wings on the breeze
Content with the dance that our reason believes
We settle our thoughts with the buzzing of bees
And capture the moments we’re so glad to receive

Lollygag
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Content in a moment – sublime
Perusing the chapters inside my mind
I rise to the breath of a sweet smelling aire
While traveling the fences to get there on time

Time stands alone as it stands in my way
The world passes by without a care
Crooning a tune in an old wooden bowl
I sit in the moonlight – shattering my soul –

                      It’s brilliant!

These thoughts now untold ride up in the sky
Tantalized by motion, I strive to get by –

                     Wondering?

Not content to dream the hours away
I sit in the shadows, pretending to pray
To regress into blindness, oblivious am I
That teasing the moment is not the answer

I mosey along – spend the day in a trance
And while it away for something to say
There’s nothing to do
But what can I see?
When gravity smiles and pulls down on me

Tested at last, I find something new
Can’t truly say what it is right now
There is no beginning or end in sight
I’m lost in the flood of a rising tide

I turn it over to see what’s inside
The fire burns bright in the bowels of my dream
It’s not a thing I know how to hide
Nothing is exactly the way that is seems

Daylight punctures the face of the dark
I kick it and test it, the hour of the deep
Puzzling it is
There is no delay
Remaining entranced
Containing a chance
My heart seizes time
As it all drifts away

Let Go
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Looking again for one last dance
Writing the rhyme for one last time
Letting go and taking hold
I pass the time letting time go by
There is no qualm, there is no fear
I take it all in as it comes along
There is no measure that I cannot see
There is no place I’d rather be
You can’t stop me, I’m way ahead
I won’t look back, instead...
I’ll take the chance that appears to me
And write the song the muse lets me see
Don’t ask me why, it happens so
I’m always just ready to simply let go

Insight (2)
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
This is the second of two poems titled "Insight" I originally thought about merging the two into one but then decided to let them stand on their own.

Ideas come from insight
Leading us down a narrow path
Barefoot loose and fancy free
We’re lost in a moment we need to believe
Cherishing the moment we ramble on by
Over the ledge do we like to fly
Twilight glistens across your face
Illuminating the world we choose to make

Horses Of War
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Let the words flow slowly by
Drift and dream your time away
Pass though the portal with your magical eye
Drive on through to the other side

Correct the line with a little rhyme
Bridal the horses of war with your phrase
Detect a mention in what you can say
Deliver the truth on a platter of clay

Surrender the false and let it ring true
Remember the place where it all began
Don’t get lost in the words on the page
Tear them apart with a dulling rage

Take the splinters and make them whole
Install the spline in a deliberate way
Spell out those drumbeats you care to believe
Ransom the rest for a bottle of ink

Remember to tell us your treasured thoughts
Carry the banner and hold it on high
Watch as the moments slowly pass by
You can be just the same without knowing why
