Forward
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
It’s nothing but rumor, conjecture you see
We can’t get away from the fallacy pending
Tiny packets of thoughts written down
Means nothing need bring us right back here again

We'll just have to settle for a handful of prose
Some small reminders of where we have been
I compose this verse in a tiny place
Forward into the space I create

Can’t get away from this handsome groove
Bent on reflections of the over-absurd
Can you see it or did you miss it?
There is no fault if you did or didn’t

Caught in a war with your own intuition
Lost in the hall with too many doors
Trembling trombones might rattle your bones
But the finch sings its tune under a waning moon

If you pay 15 cents for a sup of some wine
The time will be ripe to look deep inside
The moment threads time through the fabric of space
We’re here to get caught in this frantic race

Believe if you need it or ramble on by
Don’t let it stop you from a breaking away
Make it your moment and surrender your soul
To the mighty journey that can make you whole

Fly Away
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Is there something caught in your eye?
Is it a reflection of things gone by?
I look in your eyes and find only me.
I’m wondering what else you happen to see.

Watching the vision as it floats away,
we’re trapped in a trance and cannot escape.
I’m standing right here because I want you to know.
Please take a chance now and let me come in.

I’ll dance you a jig and sing you a tune.
We can waltz in the shadows and
bark at the moon.

The piper is calling us back again.
I won’t let you go with a tear in your eye.
Just cast me a smile and venture on in.
Let’s take this last chance to get up and fly.

Fall
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Autumn cries as the colors fly
Rusty hues command the view
There’s a weeping in the willows here
A measured bliss settles down so clear
Summertime’s mirage drifts slowly away
We tap at the trees to get at the sap
The sugar is made for the table we laid
Flora and fauna celebrate the days
Life grows away, prepared for the night
Moments in an enduring cycle tick by
Autumn falls to its decided place
We’re left with a memory of what we have seen
We ready ourselves for this season to fly
We stand drenched in the colors of a fading sky

Escape
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Getting away from it all again
There is no knowing how we'll sleep tonight
Away from here is where we'll go
Taking a chance on a brand new show
Chasing a now that only you can see
From here to there is where you’ll be
Your heart tends the fire
Your head measures time
Peace is the pleasure inside your mind

Election
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
January 20th, 2017 (Inauguration Day)**

Let the people decide
Let the decision be final
Open your heart and do what is best
Let the trumpet sound from way up on high
Know what you say and say what you know
Believe that you matter and don’t let it go
I don't care if you approve of this message or not
IT’S MY MESSAGE!
Winners and losers are all the same
Money flies away on a mighty wind
It's all nonsense and the people lose
Nothing changes but it's time for a change

Drifting On A Breeze
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
There is splendor in the lush green grass
Flowers bend lightly in a gentle wind
Wild strawberries dance in the spacious field
Grazing is easy in the early spring
Lost in the moment, the church bells chime
Sounding the hours, they ring and rhyme
A profound happy music cuts through the air
It’s soft on the ears and easy on the soul
Carried by the breeze, it makes us whole

Forever More
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Sort it all out and give it away
Never let loose of the games we play
Shivering cold, the pattern is closed
Entwined in the memories we left far behind

Damaged goods were never that good
Tell me a lie, I’ll wish you good riddance
Sell me a cow and I’ll give you some milk
Tell me a tale and I’ll weave it for you

Never forget the places we’ve seen
Let me forgive what you really mean
Cost me a nickel to buy a pickle
I ate it in one bite

There is nothing I tell that can’t go well
Also nothing I see that can’t be believed
This doesn’t make me a sear you know
It’s just something I had to say

Blithering idiot, I call her by name
Paying our dues with a bucket of snails
Are you really going to let that tainted score fly
And control what you dream forever more?

Dreams (1)
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Savored moments drifting through time
The quiet hour is where we find them
Drifting and dreaming across the sheets
Sliding around on the fabric we weave
Playing fiddles to a magical tune
They bounce and rattle around the room
Nothing is left but our moments in time
Anything lost is gained in rhyme
All that is dreamed in this special space
Is made for a moment we can’t replace

Do-over
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Dancing  across the daylight
Or romping around in the moonlit night
Spending each moment of every day
We pass through the portal
To just get away

Beyond the void
Where there is no when
It’s not very easy to find the right way
To let loose the passion and watch it soar
In a fancy fashion we both can adore

Tossed in the moment
The lines break down
Catching a wave, time slips slowly by
With never a mention of where we have been
We’re seeking a new way to try it again

Do It Again
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
It’s a deliberate act.
I don’t know why
we left it that way
for one more time.
I’m pouring over the
facts that I see.
Can you tell me now
what I should believe?
Time will tell but
I just can’t wait.
I’m drifting and dreaming
in an magic state.
My mooring is loose
but I’ll stay on the course.
Please let me know
if we can do it again.

Creativity
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Spinning a tale is such a dance.
Another chance to weave some rhyme.
Catching the wave and riding on high,
I reach for the heavens behind my eyes.

I’m watching the mirror as it reflects your face.
Spending each moment the way that you do.
The magic you hold in the palm of your hand
is here for a moment but the moment won’t last.

I don’t know where it all goes from here.
I can’t let go of such a novel state.
I won’t relax and I won’t be late.
I’ll create in the time you most surely await.

Weaving the threads on a golden loom
Inspiration moves me from room to room
I yearn for the source of the waters that flow
And touch at the sky with the reach of my eye

Commitment
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Don’t let go of this vision you have
Don’t settle for less, just reach for the stars
It’s all a chance and nothing more
If you cannot try then what’s there to say?
If you cannot reach then what’s there to touch?
The picture unfolds as you turn the page
Lightning will strike with a furious rage but
I’ll see you again when clock turns round so
Please don’t let go of the thoughts we have found

Come Back
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Back to my ******* of tricks here. Spontaneous words and meter. Well, there is an old scrap of poetry woven in here as well.

“Curiosity about life in all of its aspects, I think, is still the secret of great creative people” – Leo Burnett

Tossed my salad and read the news
Nothing is better when you have the blues
Set on a path of random destruction
Bent on the bar, it’s raised very high

I render the page any way that I can
And won’t rearrange it absent of reason
I contend with the moment as best I know how
Reliving the pattern I chose to believe

I believe in it all if there’s half a chance
Let’s settle the sound, we’re caught in a trance
Got no particular place to go
Tis reason to fly, it will help get you by

A shattered pane is all that I see
The window frame remains intact
You can’t always be as lucky as me
It’s time to let go and find your way back

Don’t ask me how we got so astray
To not come back in the usual way
With words and laughter and tears and jests
But then who knows?

                                           We may.

Coincidence
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Did that really just happen again
What a chance passage you read to me now
I can’t really tell if you meant it that way
It isn’t a thing I see every day
My mind’s twisted up by the play that you made
Not expected, there’s nothing to say
I never intended to pass the time
Musing so hard over this silly rhyme
Caught with my pants down
I laugh it away
Trapped in the moment
I’ll let it play

Cloud Nine
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Jubilant lines splash the quiet page
I’m lost in the passages
I have to say
Token rhythms eek out from the seams
Blessed am I for seeing the sky
So close it is
I can almost touch
The clouds in the heavens
As they pass on by
I’ll take the ride
It’s a chance I know
But I can’t deny
This place in my dreams
Where I caught my own shadow
And learned to believe

Cause and Effect
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Tell me what the reason is
Let me see the altered state
Move onto another place
I’ll guess my way into a chance you can see
Watch the ripples roll slowly by
You can make your own ripples without even trying
It all comes back in a different way
Depends on what you like to say
The mission here isn’t all that clear
The time we spend just watching the time
Could easily be used for something far better
It doesn’t really matter what we say or we do
We can’t go back
And we can’t really stay
Let’s just take what comes
And tuck it away

Can't Stop Me Now
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Spitting out the words again
Spelling a sense of thoughts unheard
Casual chances dance in the night
Muttering phrases lock into step

The siren wails out a resounding tune
Reporting the cause of time unfurled
Carrying the sound to the edges of time
Granting the passages that fill my mind

Sometimes the story dissolves in the wind
Noticed in passing, the fire burns within
Mine is the true but gentle concern
Of course, a new notion makes the world turn

Surely a poet can let it all in
Pruning the measure of a lifetime in years
The drums and the fife sound a haunting refrain
I could hear it so clear in the pouring rain

The moon shines bright on the desert sand
Nothing can stop me, the one who I am
Random stiches compound the suspense
It’s already a complex tale to defend

Lost in the book where the story unfolds
The end is to come but it’s not been told
Like you, I’ve been sold a half-finished page
I’ll finish it now and not waste a day

Can't Get Out
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Don’t let me forget the song that I sing
There is a catastrophe almost happening it seems
It won’t end soon and I have no clue
Why I bought that bridge and set it on fire

Lost my shoe in the resulting news
Can’t let the rain get me down again
Won’t let it break me into kindling and when
I set to the task with a vigor renewed,
I will leave the rest for the sheriff to chew

Blast me again, let me see your shorts
Never again will I spend the rent
Broken but steady I slipped through the past

Nothing happened!

Got my line while waiting in line
Took a shortcut to the front of the pack
It doesn’t happen often but it happens enough

Little tracks in the snow
A kind face that you know
Steaming mad or maybe just mad
Can’t say which it is this time

You can beat the witch but you’ll never win
She’s far too smart for the likes of us
Didn’t you say that we have to move on?
Don’t you know that we’ll never get out

Camping
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Pitch the tent and strike a fire
Get the marsh mellows out
Gather around and sing some songs
Laugh and cry and scream and shout
Unroll the bags and zip them up
Did you bring a pillow?
Then get it out and flash the light
Have some s'mores and tend the fire
Enjoy the company and
Be at peace
Camp yourself right off to sleep
Getting a bit whimsical here. I do love camping though.

Brilliance
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Take a look inside my mind
There is no telling what there is to find
A shiny tale you may want to see
Or maybe it’s something that cannot be

Bide your time, it’s all entwined
Set yourself down and look for a rhyme
You can let it hang out for another day
But it’s seldom I have this much to say

There’s nothing to lose, no place to be
Never will we have this day again
You can tie your shoes or read the news
I’m not going to stand in your way

Let’s settle our debt and take our leave
I’ll see you again if you pass this way
Thought I had something more to say
If I figure it out I’ll let you know

So have yourself a very great day
And don’t get lost in the words I write
Watch for the brilliance if you feel you must
But it’s best to reflect on your own shining star
Oops, just realized I posted an older version of this. Error corrected.

Bridging The Gap
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Settling the rhyme for a stitch makes nine
Cost me the chance for a celestial dance
Don’t know where it will all end up
Your guess is as good as a guess can be

Lost in the forest I bend in the wind
Subtracting a notion, I can finally begin
Caught in a vortex of a proverbial spin
A biblical trance defines my stance

Praying for a change at the final tone
Blessed are you for carrying the load
Seldom has ever a tale been so told
Often the passing is a whale of a song

Delivering a passage we’re bound to forget
Captured by another we once were told
Hanging in traction we bought the whole farm
Twisting the melody into processed cheese

Burning the bridge, we challenge the knight
Telling his story with a bucket of time
Rendering fat in a once chilled vat
Spam on the plate leaves me asking for more

Born in the cusp of a half-baked moon
I can’t fake a grin ‘til it’s all settled in
Tantric memories collapse in my mind
Got to write down the thoughts I divine

But there is no sure way back that I know
It’s a dizzying scene, I can’t pretend
Something I see every now and then
There’s a course wind blowing in my face today
If I can just turn around, I’ll chart a new way
Confusion reigns in the maelstrom I see but
I see it so clearly there’s a harmony brewing
The world doesn’t stop as I walk on by
It leaves me right here for another try

A Story For You
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Won’t you please read the following lines
They’re short as intended
But packed with meat
Something said, so much to read
The time is right for what you seek
Nothing more is able than
A wandering muse
To cast with your shadow
Time beats the pattern and
Space pipes a tune
The room is filled with a passing song
Nothing is lost and all is gained
Trapped in the music
We’re caught on the stage
We’re lost in the pattern but
You can make it from here if
You need to step back and
Ring the bell
The chimes will tell
A story for you

A Lasting Chance?
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
There is nothing compared to life that we live
Riding the moment is all that there is
Believing in memories we look to the past
To strive for the future to get there at last
The river flows by in a tumultuous state
We look for the answers before it’s too late
We drift on a rainbow as we wander on by
Caught in the ripples, we’re swept far away
Traveling back over the path that we’ve laid
We measure the distance by the strides that we take
It’s our only opportunity to pass this way
The world waits and watches our steps in the sand
There is no map of the road up ahead
We have but one chance to make the bend
We can’t give in when we need to fight
It takes all we’ve got just to get it right

A Dividing Line
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Comparing the past with the future at last
Sitting on the fence in between the sides
Caught in a moment of grand reflection
We weigh out a measure of our place in this time

Loosing the arrow of change, it flies
Into the deep heart of space it climbs
Correcting the manner we chose to stand
We ladle our sauce from the grand design

Born of contention we pass it along
Setting our feet on a different path
We can sell our souls for a scrap of stale bread but
Aren't we just dreaming our time in the sun?

Passing the day with a turbulent fact
Losing our way on the pathway back
We are telling our tale for a chance at success
Reliving the moment a it rolls off the press

Saving our tick for another day
Tomorrow is fiction or so they say
The day past the moment always comes and it goes
We’re drifting and gleaning the time that we’ve sown

Measuring the thought that we’re glad to know
Surrendering nothing, we take some time
Never regretting the breadth of our soul
Believing in a future that will make us whole

Wind blows me so far away
Just another day

Slicing through the breeze
Time stands still for all to hear
The silence begins

Coursing through daylight
Set my sails and my rudder
To the edge of night

The birds they do sing
All the world is listening
A song of great hope

Riding on the tide
The world passes slowly by
Now washed on the waves

Across the Page
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
When I put you on my page
You'll never get yourself away
These words are stamped with indelible ink
I write them all down just to make you think

You thought you could get away with it dear
But I tell you right now that your story's is clear
Your actions made you the topic of this write
And you'll never get back all the words that I type

You're caught in a trap of a verbial spin
This rhetoric dances all over the page
You can't stop the flow, I will never give in
I'll leave you right here because you left me right there

Your treachery gave you away again
These lines are the recourse I'm looking to find
I type out the words and let then ring true
I'll tell them your story and all that you do

What you did do or what you did not
It no longer matters, I've set it aside
Between the margins is where you will live
And I'll leave you right there
til the end of our days.

Bird Man
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
“Forgive, O Lord, my little jokes on Thee and I'll forgive Thy great big one on me.” Robert Frost

Scraps of bread for his feathered friends
Music for all his other friends
Poncho-clad in his favorite chair
Not a worry, not a care
We all flock around the sound that he brings
His box etches tunes that set the mood
We take it all in while
Our conversation wanders
These words they compel our love of life
It's easy to be with Bird Man and
It's easy to believe in birds

Bird Man (Antonio) is constrained by a wheel chair but he doesn’t let that keep him down. He’s truly a lover of both birds and music and he’s a great friend. One could only wish for a friend like him. Yes, I’m lucky.

Careless
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
We were careless with our love
and it dwindled.
We got all caught up
in the daily routine.
What once was pristine
has now been swindled.
We cheated the muse and she flew away.
One and one makes two for today.
This much is what we know is true.
The hearts we’ve broken may never mend.
It does no good for us to pretend
that we can take it all back and fix it when
it takes two hearts to beat as one.

Hitch
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
I set down my well traveled backpack
next to the sign which read,

            No Pedestrians,
            No Equestrians,
            No Bicycles or Motor-driven cycles
            Allowed Beyond This Point.

Thus confined,
I stuck out my thumb
in a well-defined gesture
specifically designed
to catch the eye of a
friendly motorist
just passing by.

The traffic was light though
still in quite a frenzy.

Alone and content,
on the side of the road,
I was watching the drivers
as they breezed blindly by.

Each had the potential
to give me a ride.
There on the roadside
I waved them good by.

The man in his Benz
and the lady in her bug,
the banker, the waitress
and an old pickup truck

Each one was equal
as they passed down the trail.
Barely a gesture
or the meeting of eyes.

The time right then was not important to me
but all of the others had somewhere to be.
Getting along from A to Z
was all that mattered to little old me.

Patience is a virtue
for those who wait.
Along came a trucker
with a load on his tail.

He pulled up beside me
and bid me “get in.”
                                  -- So I did.

The engine revved up and we took to the road.
Right past that old sign that kept me confined,
we took up the hum of that asphalt trail
and measured our distance with the passing of miles.

Lost on the road with the corn rushing by
I'm free -- I’M FREE and that is why
I’ll come back again
For one more try.
The lessons I’ve  learned will help me get by.

I hitchhiked thousands of miles in my younger days. The opening stanzas were written on the side of the road nearly 40 years ago.

Loves his *****
I can barely understand a single word he says
He loves the girls, cigarettes, beer and cards
Always a sucker for a good cigar

Only one place he’d rather be
Loves his car in which he likes to play
An average student never had his way
Five of ten is the turn that he took

The director smiled
And asked him for more…
                                           …Money
I love this man and
We drink together
We laugh and smile no matter
the weather

His friendship rings true
As does all of mine too
Our pleasure’s a chance
So we choose now to dance

Like a teddy bear
He sleeps through the day
And into the night
For heaven’s sake

We tender the measure
Of an unsung rhyme
Our thoughts comes together
As we begin to climb

Has lots to say
But it rattles along
And I can’t get away

I’m happy to say

With Love (a song)
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
I want to make you say you’ll stay
But that’s just in our way
‘cuz the lights are burnin' dim in town
And the rain keeps coming down...

In hellfire and lead
Starvation for a pillow
How is your sleep?—send me a letter
Keep up the peace
Don’t buy diamonds from Caucasian creeps
And blank B of A
Just give it away

Hey, get your hands out of there!
We’ve got work to do
You can’t mess up my brain
But you’re driving meeeeeee to
Inspiration!

So good bye for now
Or whenever
With love

I said GOOD BYE FOR NOW
OR WHENEVER
WITH LOVE

With Love was written for Maria Luisa Garza; a great lover of music, poetry and poets, art and artists, Mother Earth, the cosmos and more. A staunch environmentalist and a skilled gardener she was when I knew her. We tangled up in love and then went our separate ways under the best of circumstances. This song was written around the time we parted ways. I will always love her for her free, hippy spirit, her fierce ******* and a great many life lessons.

A Question
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
I asked you a question but
did you really hear?
I said…
did you get my meaning
or was I not too clear?

It wasn’t really serious.
No more than just a lark.
You know I’m not that curious.
Just looking for a spark.

So if you’ve read what’s in my head,
then let me know your side.
For all your little whimsical thoughts
I’m sure I can abide.

It’s just a conversation dear
and not a clash of nations.
Just let me know if it gets too tense.
I’ll ask it again if it makes no sense.

Don’t let this peaceful feeling go.
Just take it all in stride.
We might not find the meaning though
at least we know we tried.

A tempest twisted
Her magical state
Such simple thoughts
Arranged by fate

Strong yet true
So hard to use
The blues she sang
Were tough but true

The time she took
To spin her tale
Was lost for words
Inside my mind

The terminal point
Of her passing endeavor
Revealed a measure
Of another whenever

Her moment in time
Was drifting by
It opened my mind
As I watched her cry

I held her head
Against my breast
And listened closely
To all the rest

She whispered quietly
In my patient ear
And spoke those words
I found so dear

We found a place
Inside the now
To settle down
And laugh and cry

We made a pact
Right then and there
To be free of worry
And always care

I’m not really a poet…
I just like to write poetry.

I’ve broken the rules
That I don’t know exist.

I’ve tempted the muse
But I can’t resist
The chance to break down
These words into song.

I sing and I dance
When I get the chance.
I laugh and I cry
But I never know why.

Please don’t compare me
I’m quite very wary
But all that I’ve said
Might be better off read.

Not all that I write
Is even alright.
I just want to say it
And let it go by.

Don’t puncture my words
With needle and thread.
I’m tempted to say it
All over again

An angel appeared in the shape of a bird
Teasing me with all her simple reminders
She was testing me with her pleasant demeanor

The tune that she sang resonated with me
Up in that tree, she fostered my thoughts
Believing in all she brought to me
I was caught in the words she taught to me

I wrote them all down as fast as I could
Each measured phrase she had shared with me
The time she took to sing her song
Was precious to me so I sang along

In tune with the message, the words they did spill
Onto the page and out through the window
They sailed on a breeze back to my sweet angel
She settled them there and chirped her farewell

I wished her adieu and watched her fly
Into the wind she disappeared on the wing
I hadn’t the chance to ask her why
She just left me right there with a lasting good bye

Chirp, chirp, chirp
Chirp, chirp

Treasure
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
I looked inside my old beaten chest
While wishing I might find a miracle there
My thoughts rang as deep as the waters can rise
The measured memories were not disguised

I looked for the treasure, the silver and gold
The crown and the pleasures as yet untold
Drifting and dreaming inside that old box
My fingers they clasped at the dusty remains

I could see it so clear as it started to rain
I pulled out a thought and set it to pen
I wrote it all down to save it for when
The time is right to read it again

Comes A Hither
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Once upon a time there came a hither
This nothing was but a better remembered
The thoughts of it’s mention
And lasting intention
Dream out in the night
And turn slowly near

Of all this untold, the fret won’t matter
The known and the true dance in tireless progression
The time that it takes
To close in the gap
Remains just a chance
That we hold in our hands

The story’s now near once again a hither
It’s never so close as away it becomes
How near yet how far
How bizarre can it be
To tread in this moment
And live what we see

What's Left Of A Lifetime
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
What was, what is, what cannot be
What comes, what goes, what withers away
The still of the night may tuck me right in
But the daylight reminds me of what I desire.

A silver lining reflects on my dream
The tussle of time works to drive it away
The traps are set, and the mines are laid
But I’m standing right here with that thought in my head.

To take a journey so bold and grave
There’s no looking back through the clouds and the rain
What’s here for a moment is gone in a day
What’s left of a lifetime no one can say.

We’re caught in the throttle of a blazing sun
Around and around the journey extends
We’ll dance this great dance to the very last step
Then we’ll harvest the rest that we’ve come to expect.

Unwitting Attraction
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Her eyes were a portent to loosing my mind
That smile made me mad by curious design
I tangled so deep in her silken hair
The memories she left found me wanting for more

Her eyes burned a hole through the channels of my mind
Mesmerized in passion I stepped through the door
Lost in the action of feeling attraction
I was tossed in a rapture I could only adore

Unaware of her magic, my life took a turn
While there in the alley she wandered away
Her tempest was wrapped down deep in my sole
There was just nothing left to settle that score

I watched her go by and on up the stairs
She left me right there to blink and to stare
From the depth of her whirlwind I walked through the night
Now over that ledge, I must reach for a light

The Nows and Whenevers
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
In a tender moment I looked on your face
That pageant surrounding your creative mind
I looked down so deep at the soul in your eyes
Then measured our chances with a few stolen glances

Another long look into your mirror
Left me wondering what you might see
The trials and endeavors, the nows and whenevers
Are pleasant reminders of what we might be

We’re caught in the whirl of a magnetic grip
Time rolls away as it dashes our fate
The spring and the winter, the summer and fall
Are naught but the seasons we live in our dreams

Content with the motion of this little dance
We step off the edge and into the abyss
Time looses meaning as we tumble on in
Our passion is bleeding as we sway in the breeze

The Seasons Of A Day
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Good morning
--------------^--------------
You’re just the way to start my day
I’m typing these words across your page
The treasure you bring I salt away
The measure of your meaning is easy to gauge

We’re waltzing along to the image you made
It’s a delicate dance, that much is true
If you were the muse in the game that we played
You left me entranced over the land that we flew

Good afternoon
--------------^--------------
It’s been a busy day but I won’t dwell
We shouldn’t get lost in this moment of time
I’m happy you made it through the door so well
There’s still enough left to finish this rhyme

Into the battle with our spirits so high
We dance in the shadows of the noon day sun
Our hearts beats a passage that soars to the sky
It’s a little bit selfish but a lot more fun

Good evening
--------------^--------------
Welcome to this curious test of my measure
Glad you could stop by and take it all in
Feel free to browse and carouse at your leisure
You won’t know the ending until you begin

Parsing the lines into solid shapes
The trance of this moment is all that we find
It opens our thoughts up and pulls back the drapes
We’re left with a memory that’s caught in our mind

Good Night
--------------^--------------
Seldom my thoughts spin off of the page
It’s better to test them in the mirror of time
It doesn’t really help to go off in a rage
There’s much more to matter and more hills to climb

My mind slips off to a time in the past
The memory is cold and dark and deep
It’s just for a moment but the moment might last
I’ll take it to bed and there drop off to sleep
The sections of this poem were written a the time of day indicated in the poem. They are not necessarily about those times but rather an attempt to compare my writing at different times of the day.
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
Catching up from the other day
Is not as easy as some might say
Can’t get back what we failed to find
If I try, I could lose my mind

I’m on the path that I chose to take
It’s all a result of the chances I found
Pleasant indeed is the song that I sing
My soul settles down and turns me around

Now facing forward into the breeze
Not looking back is the name of the game
Riding the wave is the style of my play
In the hint of a moment, I’ll chart my own way

Into the stormy sky I gaze
Here on the ground I look all around
Tossed in the measure of the sight and the sound
I laugh with the jester to whom I am bound

Sweet Intentions
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
The measure of pleasure is hard to explain
Caught in a tempest, what a song we might sing
They say that the moment cannot truly last but
Don’t let it go, hold on to it fast!

Catching the train to a lost destination
The tune that we’re riding is not for the faint
With gestures we made just to get through the day
The fact remains that we can’t walk away

There’s nary the time to settle the past
We’re holding on fast to our very last chance
For miracles passing and echoes dancing
We tender reflections of our own sweet intentions

The Rustling of Leaves
Richard Grahn Apr 2017
The life of a tree is a thing to behold
From sprouts into forest they slowly unfold
The buds try to reach for an early spring
While leaves do announce a season of green

Autumn colors are a sight to be seen
In winter the branches stretch bare to the sky
Stable and firm the roots they reach down
Looking for water far deep underground

Caught in a moment of standing so tall
They brace in the wind and seldom fall
Born in the magic of a summer breeze
Nature paints life with the rustling of leaves
