Pop pop.
Gunned down.
Hands up.
On the ground.

I never seen a prison cell
Accept my own house.
‘cause as soon as I step out side
police come out.

I never seen a prison cell
accept my own mind
As soon as we have some fun
They creep up from behind.

Pop pop.
Gunned down.
Hands up.
On the ground.

I did an extra 7 years
Just to make sure they don’t mess with me.
But the color of my skin
aint a match for my master’s degree.

I make a lot of money
and I’ve never sold D.
But I know they gunna
find a reason eventually.

Pop pop.
Gunned down.
Hands up.
On the ground.

They never have to put the cuffs on me
for me to be in jail.
because i’ve seen it so many times,
the memories are my cell.

Pop pop

Black is the color of my true love.
Black is his voice.
Black is his face.
Black is his hair.

Black is the fullness of his lips.
Black is the roundness of his nose.
Black is the posture of his pose.

My true love is the color of black.
His strong back and arms.
His never give up or in attitude.

To him my soul belongs.
His love is mine.
And my love is his.

My true love is the color of black.
I was inspired to write this poem because of Rhiannon Giddens. She is one of my favorite singers of all time. This poem is a version of her song "Black is the Color".

Raised in California grew up in the hood
It’s where I first discovered my morning wood
***** I did detect became my *** ***
Creating what looked like a perfect tee ***
Didn't understand I was very young
I would play Cowboys and Indians with it just for fun
Till one day I saw my first pair of ****
Looked at my pants I was hard and stiff
Pop’s ******* magazines laid around for fun?
I’m a ****** Scorpio I figured out how to ***
The girls noticed me knew I was wild
Would grabby feel me up I was no longer a child
My **** is like a clock keeping time like it should
My sunrise with a surprise My Morning Wood!

Better than *** cake
Is a lie,
Because nothing is better
Than ***
Besides you.
Forrunately, I can have
That cake and eat
It too.

I want your advice, I want your obstinate,
I want your headstrong self-confident,
I want your fingers, I want your hands,
I want your bare-skinned body in the sand,
I want your voice, I want your touch,
I want you gentle and I want you rough,
I want your laughter, I want your smile,
I want you happy, moody, or wild,
I want your embrace, I want your kiss,
I want to feel appreciated, cared for, missed,
I want you quiet, I want your trust,
I want your understanding, I want your lust,
I want your affection, I want your time,
I want to be yours and for you to be mine

I'm not lazy, I'm depressed.
My hands are swollen,
my mouth is empty,
I am a void with shredded skin.

Don't tell me to pray,
I'm drowning, I need air, not words.
Not these words.

the day we first met,
you manifested your will
to depart from me.

I was planted deep in the ground
I lived in a world where
Darkness covered my thoughts
And dirt surrounded my entire being
For a while, I thought I will never be clean

Until time had come for me to sprout
I raised my head up above the clouds
And saw the bright summer sky
Never have I imagined that life could be so beautiful
Put your head up high.

you tempt me
with your temper
but i have a temperate
response to your tantrum
because a tempest like you
will attempt to ride tandem
if things do not follow through
like you planned them to.
