from a dream*

...My student's name is Ari
and he's dying...

“No serious talk today!” he warns
He wants to laugh –
and so we do

He wants the Patriarchs and Prophets
on this tropical island
He names them doing something funny
and I pick up where he leaves off--
with the second line:

“Elijah, with his ravens on a blow-up raft...”
“...Ascends with ham sandwich, sipping wine!”

    “Jeremiah throwing mud *****...”
    “...at Zedekiah's white garage!”

We rewrite the Old Testament
laughing till we cry

“Now that's what I'm talkin' about!”
He's pumped
and kicks that rebel trashcan 'cross the room
...and suddenly shouts out--

“For everything there is a season...!”

I do not finish this one....

“I'll tell Solomon you said Hi”
____

...and in that moment half aware...

_____

I'm wearing a grass skirt
in someone else's dream

I'm on Instagram
and I don't know how I got there

I have coconut halves for my ****
but for the life of me –
can't figure
how to keep them on

So I let them sway with my grasses
to the languid freedom of marimba music
toes clutching warmth of sand
No one here to see
but Instagram?

Nagging in the background:
How did I ever get here?

Dreaming like this... right?
Thanks to Anon for the suggestion to switch the order of the two pieces to this dream.  Yes, definitely makes it more sensible.

These two different dreams just somehow blended together.

I have never been to the tropics, but it's nice to dream, seein' as how it'll be
3 degrees here tonight.  I've worked with kids and as a teacher in public schools, so I guess that's where the rest comes from--that, and I've read the Old Testament.

She Writes
What is Love really?
Is it really affection?
Or an obsession?
The line is blurred

When you love someone
So madly
That you lose yourself
Is that love?

Constantly thinking, analyzing,
Obsessing
Every detail of a relationship
Is that out of affection?

The pain in your chest
Thinking about them with someone else
Is that jealousy because of affection?
I am not convinced

i wrote a poem
not to impress
but to express.
Reality
Today marks the start
Of another great play
Actors prance around
Wearing masks of clay

Do they need to smile
Or do they need to cry
No matter the emotion
This mask helps them to lie

But sometimes they wonder
How it would be
If they could cast away their mask
And be truly ‘me'

But the audience desires not they
But who they have become
So they can't, they mustn't, they shouldn't
Clad in masks they become numb

Day in day out their masks they don
All so their perfect show can go on

The ocean, made of purest blue,
hides perils deep within.
The scorching day of golden sun
will quickly burn your skin.

The desert dune, so soft and smooth,
Is merciless and cruel.
But the rugged cliff, though coarse and cracked,
will not make you his fool.

Sometimes he'll break and crumble
but he only has one face.
He's proud to be imperfect,
and you'll always know your place.

Though tall and strong, he's humble
and he listens to your voice.
If you call out he'll call right back.
When you sing, he'll rejoice.

He'll offer you a foothold
or a place to stop and rest
and, though sometimes he'll slip and fall,
he'll always do his best

to give you shelter from the cold
or hold back raging tides.
His caverns, seeming dark at first,
bear sanctuary inside.

In burning heat he'll give you solace
from the scorching sands.
When darkness falls, you'll know he's there
when you reach out your hand.

He'll hold you high above the world
and show you off to all.
He'll make you feel mighty
anytime you're feeling small.

Climb high with him and you'll be sure
the view was worth the risk.
All that he asks is for respect.
But you know all of this.

How then, is it so easy
for you to compromise
on what can satisfy your soul,
yet not so for your eyes?

Perhaps you can help me see
how there's a reason why
you'd give up so much just to have
a 'better looking' guy.

It never saw itself as much,
             a rough coat...
  but underneath that where
             its true potential lay.

But when It looked deeper
all it saw was conflicting layers.
    Then the unthinkable, others saw
his uses but he just cut into himself.

Tears feel as the feeling of unworthiness
was cut away as layers fell..
but this was like every other
                     onion depressed at its worth.

but everything is special in another's eyes,
Were all like a onion, layers of dignity.
But even though we don't see it,
We all have a worth, were layers of an onion..

Let me narrate you A STORY
it began with a girl
watching an apple closely.
Watching how the caterpillar
crawled it way,
eating all day.
She cut the apple in front of his face,
and watched him run away
(W H Y D I D'NT  H E S T A Y?)
but there is a twist in the story-
the apple was her heart,
while the caterpillar was him- gone.
The story ended with a ****** knife,
lying next to her long LOST smile.
Was I not good enough?//
Oh the sisters of mercy, they are not departed or gone.
They were waiting for me when I thought that I just can't go
on.
And they brought me their comfort and later they brought me
this song.
Oh I hope you run into them, you who've been travelling so
long.
Yes you who must leave everything that you cannot control.

It begins with your family, but soon it comes around to your
soul.
Well I've been where you're hanging, I think I can see how
you're pinned:
When you're not feeling holy, your loneliness says that
you've sinned.
Well they lay down beside me, I made my confession to
them.
They touched both my eyes and I touched the dew on their hem.

If your life is a leaf that the seasons tear off and condemn
they will bind you with love that is graceful and green as a
stem.
When I left they were sleeping, I hope you run into them
soon.
Don't turn on the lights, you can read their address by the
moon.
And you won't make me jealous if I hear that they sweetened
your night:
We weren't lovers like that and besides it would still be all
right,
We weren't lovers like that and besides it would still be all
right.
