I breathe to a beat
I hear it all day
I hear it beating
I hear it screaming
At me, against me
It chokes me sometimes
And when it stops I become weary
Anxious of its return
and I start to make my own beats

Was I suppose to pretend
That I was doing okay
I didn't know the rules

I was never going to leave this place
Should have never smiled like I did
If I had known sooner

I wouldn't have tried so hard to fit in
Nadai Jul 25
A trifling bird,
Sat on my windowsill,
Looking in
Daily, tweeting and twittering,
In the early mornings.

Feeling her eyes,
leering into the walls,
That grow smaller
The longer she stays.

That nosy, unwanted bird
Comes daily,
And then flies away.

I took a deep breath once
Let it fill in all the cavities of my lungs
Prayed to God that it would be enough
To float me into space
But yet I stay

Kept it all in my lungs
Until the pressure on my chest
Became the only thing I felt

Let it constrict and collapse

If I were to die
I wanna die with this single breath
Lodged in my throat
I wanna see white with my eyes close
Let life slip with every exhale

Hold it, hold it, hold it, hold it, hold it.
Until it holds you

I am a child
and I am selfish
heartless
and rough

man is my name
and I am loosing my soul
Like the clouds loose their rain.

I found flowers growing in concrete cracks
Stuffed between the streets.

On my way to the bank I found things growing in the city.

I grabbed them,
Placed them in my hand,
Tried to deposit them,
But the teller told me I was crazy.

So I went home with pockets filled with concrete seeds–
Eyes open wide,
Cause there's something growing in my city.

I count all the times
I was left to my own device,
and I **** myself a little every time.
Nadai Dec 2018
My soul is a flowing river
stretching out,

holding onto me as I move my arms to my heart,
kick my feet rhythmically up and down
1,2, and 3

I have a dancing soul
it pulses with the music,
gyrates to the beat.

I feel it between my wants
                          and desires.

My body can't contain this dancing soul.

If I hold my breath long enough
Wait until my lungs constrict
Grab onto the nearest thing,

Will I become a tree?

If I stop trying to move with the wind
Give up on letting burnt skin
Touch lips with the sun,

Will I stop being me?

Breathe in. Breathe out.

I’ve seen clouds forming
Over wet concrete
And blue skies on a cloudy day

Yet, I still don’t know
What you’re smile looks like
Since I disappeared

I have held my heart in my arms
Stopped breathing.
Stopped moving.
And let the earth spin with me.

Sun kissed,

And still learning to walk on fire.
Nadai Dec 2023
The wind flows by me,
Water drums by the river,
Yet, I swim with you.

We are one and two,
Nature's beat between lovers,
Heart eyes in our lungs.

Must you breathe in me,
Like a seed finding its tree,
The wind flows by me.
Nadai Dec 2018
If I had known what it would cost
I wouldn’t have tried to cut myself up so much
Wouldn’t have molded myself into the American dream
Looked down at my grandmother’s footprint instead
Formed and deformed
A part of me
I should have held on tighter
To her Dream
Nadai Feb 2021
This is the place we grew
Stuck our hand in wet pavement
making our imprint on the world

This is the place we left behind
A fine memory of dust
and kicking rocks

This is the place we no longer love
filled with the old and the replaceable
counted our stacks and moved on.

Everyone has on their best dress,
Sunday afternoon,
Sitting in the pew.
I went rolling in the mud,
And soiled my sleek black shoes.

They all sing along to the same tune
Stand and sit down; Unity.
My voice is out of tune,

Give me a minute.

I saw him first at the red light,
His phone in his hand and his hat on his head,
Normal and bright, I fell in love.

If I were a male peacock,
I would’ve flashed him,
Strutted on my heels and showed him all my colors.

If I were a male peacock,
I would’ve stopped traffic to prance and dance,
Until he noticed me.

If I were more than just me,
I would ignore every excuse,
And make him see all my colors.

But I’m not, I’m just me.
And the light already turned green;
He’s gone.
And I am not a male peacock.

I am a Jumper Girl.

I take what I want
And say what I love

I destroy my lovers
and follow my destroyers.

I take everything,
and refuse everyone.

I eat when I am hungry
and drink when I am happy.

And if I were to go tomorrow
know that
I am a Jumper Girl.
Nadai Jan 2019
My feet are what hold me down,
frozen and broken.

My fear is what keeps me to the ground,
lifeless and hurting.

and I long for you

I cry out for you,
And I wait for you.

I keep my hands open
Until the day were freedom will hold me, again.
Nadai Dec 2018
Life can be everything,
And sometimes it can be nothing,
When asked “why am I like this”
I respond with life,
When asked “where am I going”
I respond with life,
And when I am left with nothing,
My God, let there be life.
Nadai Dec 2018
To see my heart disappear,
What travesty, what magic
Nadai Feb 2021
Sit still my friend
The world turns for you and me.
We yelled whatever,
And threw ourselves over concrete hills,
Smiled through toothless lips and swallowed blood,
I know what you know,
And we know nothing.
Nadai Dec 2018
I am filled with uncertainty
It grabs
            me,          attacks me.
It kills me sometimes.
Nadai Feb 2021
I fell in love with crazy at first sight,
Saw him walking ahead of me and I ran to meet him
Held onto him like I had nothing to lose
Let go of the people who loved me the most
In the hopes he would be my soft padding
When I fall

He was not,
But I loved him anyway.

I felt it deep in my bones
It rattles when I speak,
I tried to name it,
But it knows my secrets.

It teases me with my own thoughts,
until i learn to shut my own mouth.

Madness passes through blood
whether giving or receiving,
It all happens through wounds and bruises,
Madness is inherited through the bloodiest time of our life.
Nadai Feb 2019
I have an ocean in me.

Violently crashing against my bones,
Turning in my stomach.

I have a full scale hurricane in me.

Do no try to walk across my shoreline
Or ride my waves.

My water is toxic

And you will drown before you ever try to...
Nadai Dec 2018
I can’t lie to the sun and make it mine, but my skin still burns the same way
The clouds that can never be captured still finds time to shade me from light
And the trees that sway freely offer me a space to lie down when I feel like climbing
My foot still leaves footprints in the sand even when I walk away
And even though I am a stranger the birds still sing me a song of goodbye
Like my presence would be missed one day.
Red
Nadai Dec 2018
Red
I remember red
The heat of us
Tugging into me
Lighting its way up my spine
I feel it ingraining itself into every piece of me
Itching up my throat
Rolling behind my eyes
You have ignited me and now you must burn in me
Nadai Jan 2019
I have felt the pull of something deep within me,
It mistakes me for something I am not
and drives me forward into something I can be.

I have felt you pull me out within deep of myself,
You have covered my mistakes with your blood
and drove me forward into something I can be.

The river is here
The nations are around it
Around it we live

The river is here
Under my skin as I go
Take me down to the ocean

The river is here
Where the nations are growing
People, look over here

The river is here
Put your ears toward the ground
Feel the earth pulsing

The river is here
It is telling us in truth
Listen as it speaks

How the wind chases after the frolic
Of youth, given into dying leaves.

The forest air is changing colors quickly,
I barely saw the bees buzzing in heat,
Now the trees are growing barren; empty.

Found grave beauty in the naked forest.

But fairies do not dance the same without,
The timbrels of spring twirling through the air.

I have secrets in my tummy
driving my desires
giving me peace
sealing my mind
breaking my spirit
surrounding my dreams
my secrets hold me tight
tighter,
tighter,
tighter.

She was pretty,
–Unconventionally.

She was an evening dress.
Red lipstick,
By the poolside.

She was a warm hug,
Served with a side of her smile.

She was the home for the man she adored,
The chicken noodle soup on a cold day.

She was everything to everyone,
But still held in the hands of love,
Fitted curve to curve.
Nadai Dec 2018
An inch above is how I drowned
Two inches at a time is how I went down
Until I felt that ground beneath my back
And learned to breathe through the cracks
Nadai Jul 27
My neck is sore,
My feet aches,
My head pounds,

But my body moves,
Circle,
     Jump,
          Pace,
A need to touch and be touched.

Music unfiltered gyrations:
Flapping,
       Squeezing,
                     Wandering fingers
Hands grabbing onto thin air.

I need to move.
I need to feel.

Slap,       punch,           pull,
My skin is turning red.

I need to move,
I need to feel.

Spastic convulsion.

These are the moments I feel crazy.

My neck is sore,
My feet aches,
My head pounds.

I need to move.
I need to feel.
I want to stop.
Nadai Dec 2018
I met a man once who hummed his sorrows,
He Wore blue jeans and tight shirts.
Lived on the edge of the earth
and argued with destiny.
I would ask, "where are you going"
he would respond with a shrug and smirk,
"*******"

he knows what he is.
Nadai Feb 2021
I once implanted strangeness into my gown,
and when I slept I dreamt of strange worlds
I ingrained it into my skin to only be my strange self.
The others would avoid me because I was Strange from first to last look,
Little did they know,
that they were all strange, too.

Let's take a ride,
Underneath the subway train,
To feel what it's like to fly,
Under the city streets.

Underneath foot traffic,
      and rush hour.

We will fly like airplanes;
Clouds and space,
Exchange it for motors and conductors.

Let's take a ride,
Me and you.

Just you and me.

Sun
Closing your eyes is the best
When trying to avoid the sun,

Just not when you're driving.
Nadai Dec 2018
The sun was shining today
Liked I asked it about its history
I swore it smiled for a second before it went on this day long story
About how it was here long before the man could say mom
Each flame represents a decade of heat that has yet to pass
And the middle being something that already happened
Cause we’re all living somewhere between the past and present
The sun knew why she smiled and I knew why I cried
Thousands of years for this day to happen and it’s already gone
I cried for my paper days and the sun who was still there
I still sat inside because sometimes the sun shined too brightly
And I wasn’t the one to make it stop but I was the one to dim it down
Nadai Jan 8
I read your word,
Opened your book
And tried to chisel it on my skull.

With fresh blood,
Pouring over my brows,
I walk around,
Fresh and anointed,
Scarred, but ok.
Nadai Feb 2021
Dear love,
I don't need you to fix me,
I don't need you to stick around until a better version of me shows up,
I am who I am even on my worst days
So don't fill me with your empty flatteries,
I can take all your rough words
Even if you're words come like a sword,
As long as it's honest I'll take it,
As long as you stay I'll keep you.
Nadai Dec 2018
I never knew how hypnotizing black and blue can be
My love
Chained to us I’ll make you understand
My love
We lose ourselves in broken skin, sore bones, and vacant eyes
My love
Don’t go spilling our secrets
My love
Don’t go spilling
My love
Don’t go
My love
Nadai May 2019
I have heard you whisper,
your Taunts and your Threats,
The weight of you in the dark
The secrets you tell me.
Nadai Feb 2021
They called us "free",
Something about the way we moved without gravity,
They called us "young",
Not for out youth but for our ability to push the boundaries,
They called us "lovely",
For all the ways we let our hearts be known
They called us "fearless",
Because heights aren't as scary when you live on top of the world,
They called us "theirs",
For all the ways they chase us and try to be like us.
Nadai Jul 25
Hope wastes away,
In between minutes,
Seconds away from bad decisions.

Love gives way,
To new things;
But the old,
Has a certain hold.
Nadai Jul 29
The sun poked its head in the world,
Laid itself on the open beach,
Soaked in it’s rays
And basked in the light,
Only it can give,
Never burnt, but always shining.
Remembered the old friends she used to see;
she remembered me.

The sun stepped into my home,
And asked for a cup of tea.

“No,” I said, “I am not used to the flames
And your light is too blinding for me right now.”

“But I never get to see you, I miss you. Let me stay awhile.”

“Fine, but only if you take a shower.”
Nadai Apr 2019
I was on my way to love you,
When the
                Wind
Swept me away.
I became a leaf in fall,
Except the ground never hit
And the love never came.
Nadai Feb 2021
Like the wolves to the moon,
Like the Fish to the sea,
Like the birds to the trees,
I too will be me.
You
Nadai Feb 2021
You
Leak out and tell me your secrets,
Include me in you plans
and give me the keys to your treasure chest,
I want to be in your inner circle,
Let your mysteries unfold around me.
