early afternoon
golden sun through feathered clouds
a cat curled asleep
Haiku
The sky, a plate
in kindly blue,
smooth
as the ceramic face
of this, my swimming pool;

the bobbing palm
glazing the back
of my starfish shape
like white liquid icing;

sweet, the water's after-taste;
gently
pungent smell lodged
in the nape of my neck

I will wash the blue
off my skin, in a tiled doll-box
cubicle
I will smell the smell fade
out of my fizzled wet-strung hair
just as sugar dissipates
into the hot
nothingness of drinks.

I will pretend to forget,
then forget
I was offered a plate
in a summery shade, bordered by
tree branches
I was in that half
amniotic vessel -
weightless

as a seed pearl in
an ocean or a lover
exhaling in the depths
of a kiss;

a posy of
air on liquid.
Umbrellas held high
rubber boots splash and splatter
a drowning parade
Haiku

They have more courage than anyone I know
They constantly sacrifice their lives
So one can have wood, homes, floors, fences,
And so many more things
They never once cry or even scream
Though it hurts them, they keep their vows of silence
They give us oxygen freely
Everyday, every minute, every hour
Each day, each breath you take
It is thanks to them,
And yet they never blame you,
Nor say a harsh word
They never judge you or hold a grudge against you
Even though it's their life you have taken
Could you give up your life, so willingly?
Never cry, never utter a word, or hate anybody?
Could you give oxygen to everyone 24/7?
AND give up your life, even though
You're just as helpful living as you are dead?
If not, then those same trees that have laid down their lives
For the very chair you're sitting on, for the very home you live in
Are the best of God's creation amongst us
Let us always try to respect them
GOD BLESS THEM & LONG LIVE THE TREES!

worthless words
fall from my mouth
to beat like moths
at the dim light bulb of your brain

we at present speak
different languages
and have no desire
to find a translator

we circle each other
and watch understanding
whirlpool down the drain

for the wont of kindness
we expire, we declaim
not my fault, as we take new aim

this is not a dual,
life at ten paces
not a race
no one wins
no gold for first place

this is life, and living
gritty bits and all
this is the big wide world
where all are destined,
to fail and fall

this is how you get up
not how you fell down

this is the world of world weary
and the panache of wearing
a truly battered crown

this is the sticking point
the stinking, smoking left-over joint
the left behind,  the neverminds

this is your day
and yes...
you can live it your way

but you need to know
there are consequences
things that go bump in the night
things that in later years
you strive to make right
things that affect the trajectory
of your haphazard flight.

live your life!
live it free....
but sunshine,
in my class...
if you don' t hand
in your assignments
you heading for disaster
and this is the word.... from
the red ink master.
please mind the gap...the generation gap that is....talking to a student today who wanted a participation medal for just turning up to class ....none of the three assingments done...outraged that I would fail his lazy ****

So much to say,
No way to say it.
Camping out in Craig's garden,
four of us, thirteen or so,
and the daftness has given way
to important, dark-time talk.

Craig alone has a girlfriend, Paula -
he is a pioneer, entitled to ask,
"Fa dae you fancy, then?"
Inevitable question, social minefield

Answer, "No-one!" and you're a ****.
Give the wrong name,
and risk an eternity of slagging.
Tell the truth, and she might find out.

I go first: I have spotted a safe option.
"Ehm, I fancy Paula," I say,
and it's sort of true - she is a girl,
after all.

Chris goes next:
"Aye, I fancy Paula too."
"Me too," says Jimmy,
and we're all agreed.

We all fancy Paula.
We all fancy Craig's girlfriend,
and that's absolutely fine -
Craig seems satisfied.

And since none of us
has ever acted on such feelings:
since emotion does not yet imply intent
since there is no history of conniving,
of manipulating, of pursuit -
we are all safe and happy,
fancying our pal's lass.

Imagine that now.  Down the pub.
Getting on.  Marriages shoogly.
"Aye, I fancy your wife.
In fact, we all do."

Somehow I suspect
it would no longer be
the bonding experience
of that long-gone, pitch-dark night.
What to do..
What to do,
This silence of blue hues.
The soundless color intercedes,
and blocks my field of view.

Lonely eyes inverted and blind.
A coating worn so lightly.
Irradiated silence...
It seems to shine so brightly.

Slumbered in solitude, caged in sky.
For months I've been away.
I hear them bellow, a promise of yellow,
yet, regrettably I'll stay.

Submerged and drowning slowly.
Drip by drip inhaled.
Oxygen deprived,
and word wrapped stake impaled.

I'll trip and stumble my way out.
Eventually unleashed.
For now my silenced eyes take lead,
as I slip away from me.

Darling you cannot fix me
For I am not an object
I am a broken heart
But broken hearts are just metaphors
And I am still living
And as long as my heart is still beating
It can't be all that broken
And my lungs couldn't have completely
Caved in if I'm still breathing
And my eyes couldn't have closed out
All happiness if they still open everyday
But if I'm still a beating heart, breathing lungs, and wide eyes
Why does my heart only pump sadness through my veins
My lungs only breathe in hatred and shame
And my eyes only see the things that broke me
Darling you cannot fix me
For metaphorically,
I am a broken heart
Caved in lungs
And hazy eyes
