Response Poem
Kani Aug 30
Pragya Bhagat's Poem:
this poem isn’t an answer
it’s a question
how do we become the stories we tell ourselves
how do we become the stories we tell
how do we become the stories
how do we become
how do we
how

My response:
Answer Can Be

Or rather the stories become us
Perhaps no becoming
Perhaps they just are
As they wait for expression
Hidden beyond sight
The first piece is a poem by Goa-based poet, Pragya Bhagat.
The second piece is a response poem I wrote to her words.
Hope you enjoy it.

Remember I am
Remember all I see is I am
Remember whatever comes at me is also I am
Remember I am that is all there is

Building Bridges
Kani Sep 12
Really ounce by ounce
Pouring the concrete
To bridge
That needs bridging
To love
That needs loving
Why do we build bridges? To connect, reflect, perhaps to love. Bridges are a labor of love.

Linked
Kani 4d
Poetry is born not in time
Oasic words born rather out of time
Elapsed time uncounted in the stream of time
Treasured verses beyond time
Revamping soul connections bequest of time
Yarns spun in spools of time
This piece is called Linked.
We want to connect, with our friends and family but also with ourselves. Here, I share my reflections on connection.

Making Not
Kani Dec 6
Knot making itself not
Loved the thread

Knitting itself into something
Loved the pattern

Wearing itself a person
Loved the sweater

Bracing for the cold
Loved the winter

Charm reversed
Twice the fun
Knots evoke a doing and an undoing, a pattern and a symbol. Winter is coming; all the more reason to find warmth in people and places.

Happy Janmashtami
Kani Aug 23
Beyond time born the King
Beyond the cycle of birth and death
As though born
As though gone
Living a beautiful life
Bred for beings
Out of love
Out of compassion
A greater sacrifice
Beyond comprehension

Waiting for the humanity
To wake up to the words
Ever living in the time
Passing moments
Reminding of the passage
Yes wake up to the words
Before the ebbing of time

The greatest way to celebrate the King
Is to follow His song
Happy Janmashtami

Good god Ganesha
Climbing into hearts
In a flick of a moment
With a sweet smile
And answers bestowed
In the nick of time
All is well
When Ganesha is aboard
May you all have a prosperous Ganesh Chaturthi this year. May Lord Ganesh remove all obstacles for you.

Festive, My Way
Kani Oct 12
Lights lights lights everywhere
Smiles lighting up every face
Cheers rolling out every moment
Love pouring out every heart
Peace overcrowding every atom
Making room for only happiness
Everything else forgotten
True celebration
This piece is called Festive My Way, because the festive season has begun. Spend time with your loved ones and find joy in the little things. Sending best wishes, from our family to yours.

Bird's Eye
Kani Nov 4
I fly free
I fly free and fabulous
I fly free and fabulous over the magnanimity

As I take everything into account
Every little detail, the shape, the texture, the contour
The enormity of what’s below me, below but not below by any means

The majesty of the silver lined gorgeousity seems to loom all around me
Aspiring me to give up the flying and land on its heart
As I write nestled in its embrace

Dwelling in its magical realms creating its own constellation comprising
The floating paradise, the grand Himalayan range
Nestled amongst the snow white clouds
My heaven
This piece is called Bird's Eye, and it was written in response to a stunning photo of the Himalayas that I saw.

Who is Gandhi?
Kani Sep 27
Idealistic standards set him apart from practicalities
Yet struggles to break free of norms are ongoing efforts
By the Gandhiites if there are any left
Life is a tall order when your goals are taller
Yet a willful soul can make it seem effortless
With the sheer tenacity of the indomitable will
On the upcoming birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, let's reflect on how the man impacted our thoughts on non-violence, compassion, and building a better world.

I Said Really Magical
Kani Oct 4
Any afternoon, just like any other
Began this afternoon
This special amalgamation
Of musical balm

Surrounded by the peace
Echoed in the high arches
Accompanied by rhythmic
Clapping of enthusiasts

Emerged the culmination
Of strings and percussions
Emitting swaras in procession
Of magical precision

Inviting the dance of the deities
Embracing all and all
In divine immersion
Navratri is a 9 day festival in which Hindus worship the Goddess Durga. This season, let us honor the divine feminine.

Pal, Allow Me To Ask
Kani Sep 19
I hear you
I hear you so well
Here I am having a full life
Yet dreading the day to be
Dreaming dreams not to be
Dancing at the will of the dread
Wishing wishes ought not to be
I want the set, reset
You so gracefully
Flipped
Yet again, wishing
Wistful
It’s time for another response poem.
This time, I responded to a brilliant performance piece by Sarah Kay, founder of Project Voice.

Mine on Mine
Kani Nov 9
Once upon a time, we loved our neighbors.
Once upon a time, we shared not just love.
Once upon a time, we were role models for the world.
Once upon a time, we were leaders to be followed.
Still we are in the depths of our hearts
If we choose to
Look underneath
The fumes kindled
By the few
New veins could be found
To be unearthed
To alight the future
The recent political events in America are provoking many thoughts in me. Here’s a piece called Mine on Mine.

October-Fest
Kani Oct 18
I hear celebrations in the air
As Mother Nature puts up
Her fancy costume
Ghouls and ghosts and goblins
Get ready to scare the world
In the cutest tiny packs
Tricking and treating
With giant sweet tooth
Loving and loving
Every tiny bit of
Shrills in the air
With colors in the back
This piece is called October-Fest and it’s about the different forms tradition can take. Halloween is all about performance, trying on something new, a combination of sweet and maybe scary.

My Kind
Kani Dec 13
I see
I see everyone
Hustling and bustling

I see
I see everyone
Busy with shopping
Scoring the best deal
Out there, patting
On their backs
For a job
Well done

I see
I see everyone
Rushing off to elsewhere
Than what I call home
I wonder why
No answer came
To my mind

I think
I think everyone
Has lost the point
The point of idle time
With just home
And family

No agenda
No items to be crossed off
Just a cup of hot cocoa
A plush blanket, soothing fire
And long chatters

Something to hold onto
Until the next one
This piece is called My Kind. While the holiday season is upon us, let’s take some time out to observe: our surroundings and ourselves.

Is It?
Kani Oct 22
Is a lifetime enough
Is a lifetime enough
To immerse me
To my heart's content
To my souls quenching
To my mind's limits
To just soak in poetic phase
Is it really enough

Is a lifetime enough
Is a lifetime enough
For you, my poetic contemporaries
To create, to reflect, to rejoice
To regenerate
Is it really enough

Is a lifetime enough
Is a lifetime enough
Dear patrons, dear lovers of words
Is it really enough
To celebrate the words
Their sounds
What they profess
What they lead to
This piece is called Is It?
Sometimes, asking the right questions is more important than figuring out the answers.

Surreal
Kani Nov 16
Yes
Almost
Just quite not
Feels so
But take it back
May be or not
Slipping through
Slits in memory
Just wanting it to be
Deja vu
This piece is called “Surreal.” It attempts to capture that feeling that is often undefinable.

Gratified
Kani Nov 27
Prayer begins
As the heart melts
Eyes mist
Speech stumbles
In the grace
Of gratitude
Accompanied

Prayer continues
With the embrace
Of love and care
Shared by
The compassionate
Heartblurring
Boundaries
Along

It can be
A short lived
Episode
Or lifelong
Awakening
Either way
Heart
Loves the blooms
This piece is called Gratified. On this day of thanks, I urge you all to express gratitude to your loved ones.
