Sometimes when I am alone
I listen to the walls
and I read all of the words,
I have written
to cover me up.
Shalini Nayar Nov 2014
These walls have witnessed too much:
Fallacies hang on chipped paints,
Too weighty for their own self-murders,
Forming a plastic smile, remaining incumbent.
Air conditioned with rife medicinal regrets,
Coldly wafting in its nonchalance,
Armoring itself for another wave.
This time, the finality catches its last breath
Dyeing the molecules with dying grace
Like an ouroboros forking its venomous tongue on its own end,
Tasting not death, but imminent immortality.

I could feel the gentle snag of my bathing suit bottoms on cement,
Enjoying the sliver of shade against the afternoon sun that’s offered.
All six of us had been running home ready to change and watch cartoons,
Until labored breathing slowed you down. I stayed to keep you company, and
I watched and waited while you fought your feet back into their bracers.
Pretty, purple, and pink; they fit perfectly into your shoes, swim or sneakers;
Without them your painfully high arches would end up broken or bruised.
I turned away to stare down at a pair of black men’s dress shoes with worn laces.

I stared down at those worn laces wondering why they were so old, and
In those impeccably new black patent dress shoes reflecting my face.
I let my eyes slowly drift up the length of this man, every inch a new perspective.
I couldn’t understand where he’d come from or what he was doing, and
What’s his shirt say? We won’t learn more cursive until next year at least.
I’m cold. My eyes are no longer straining against the sun. Goosebumps erupt.
I’m snapped from the retreat into my mind with a sound it couldn’t mask,
I looked to you, then up to his hands brandishing your bracer, I’d heard it crack.

I took stock of my surroundings to figure out why my mind had shut down,
I was fully awake and racing to catch up, to rescue us, to find a solution.
You can’t defend yourself with a broken bracer and your swimsuit on the ground.
I pulled my suit into place, armoring myself against him, and tried to think.
Before my mind was made up I felt my foot rising to kick, hoping to catch some *****
While you bit his arm with the same ferocity you generally reserved for your teachers.
You spat out his blood and what looked like some flesh with a maniacal laugh
While I grabbed your arm and dragged you away from him and back home.

Your love
is in the blood
running through their veins
dripping from their hands
the voice
roaring out of their throats
the metal
armoring and wounding bodies.

Your love
pulsates in their wrists
beats in their chests
hot and passionate
uttered in everlasting violence
and tears falling for fallen ones.

But most of all your love
is destiny,
their destiny
the calling they answer
the home they return to
you.
Ares, you.

Upon imaginary wings,
Three beats beneath
Creation's favor
As lovely as You are
Truest green, your eyes,
Armoring
the secrets,
unique reasons
You smile, isn't for me
As lovely as I let you be
As lovely as I allow
Given wings,
You above, Me
Behind, beneath
Use these eyes for once
See what I can find
what needs belief
I believe because its you
you can be something
little or as grand
As I want from you
Someone pure
Unique to a world
offered up to you
your beautiful face
As I gaze up
to you, my new heaven
As lovely as I will never be.

In this deranged, fertile light -
which makes shadier our sight
-, come and sit with me, right
here to join the passage's rite
of a generous dark to find.
Unlit your cigarette with that sleight
move by offering it to the night
and, from the ashtray of dreams and might,
augur my future; see the fright
for armoring me against its smite.
And say: I bound all these tribes of kite
and bury you under the ashes and blight;
deep inside the hallways of the iron hill to quite.
Burn - you say -, and they all become trite
for they only promised me two-tongued daylight
but, now on, all I can see is the fire of my dark bright.

The bark of eternity,
an armoring sure

An oak or a maple,
their majesty pure

Below their dark cover,
time circles in rings

Where destiny spirals
—as residents sing

(Martha Brown’s Woods: March, 2021)
owls at dawn Jan 19
energy from the milky way central galaxy comes spiraling down into
my head, swirls around a bit, feeling right at home, barrels into
my throat, busting that dark tunnel open without care, and
shoots straight into my heart. it somersaults in a void of
infinite love for a short while, before smashing
into the column of my lower body, sending
tendrils of light off into more tunnels
and caves, some dark, some light
trying any way possible to
squeeze through the
traumas and pains
and fears, like
weary
broken
dams
of stone
in a
flood.
it slips
past
into
my
legs
touching
gently
the
armoring
shields
from
within
to
loosen
and
dissolve

at last
it enters the earth through my feet
continuing its journey through the underground
network of soils, organisms, rivers, fires and stone, until it
swoons lovingly into the crystalline heart of Gaia, distant lover of stars

oh man, it says, what a trip!
