A Taste of Greece
Jackie Mead Oct 2017
Skies of bright blue
Seas of Emerald Green
All the colours of the rainbow in between

Blue and White upon their flag
Bright purple flowers on sandstone coloured walls
The sands are white and dark in places
The fields are green and brown in traces

The sun shines gold on the streets
The music plays a very light beat
People lounging on the sands
Goats free to run around

Markets in the mountains selling products homemade
Monastries look as though their falling down, needing to be saved
Cash is the currency,  please don't offer card
Locals don't trust banks as to remove their cash can be very hard

Harbour renting boats out to Shipwreck Cove for the day
Put on your Captains Hat it's yours for the day
Or let someone else take you, let them take the strain
As you sit and sail basking in the sunshine admiring the blue caves
When you return to Port use the sun loungers, snorkel in the bay, the perfect end to another perfect day

Bars and restaurants and pubs all in a strip
Offering traditional food and drink, some offer Greek Music and Dancing with Fire
Some offer Sports on TV's at the bar
You can guarantee you won't need the car, 10 minutes walk from your Hotel and you will see a plethora of choice to satisfy your belly, whilst singing karaoke or watching the Tele

Whatever your choices, the Greek's love to welcome you and see you happy
So have fun drink lots, eat lots and be merry
I was completely won over by Zakynthos Island, the colours of the Ionian Sea were amazing, the people very friendly and I would love to go back again one day

She's mine!
Jackie Mead Sep 2018
She's mine!, ive known from the start.
One look into her beautiful blue eyes, shoots an arrow straight to my heart.

She's mine! to love, hold and protect!
How do i get those two words from her, do i fall to the floor upon one knee, do i genuflect subtly?

She's mine! She said "i will"!
My heart is beating so fast, it's such a thrill.

She's mine! So why does my chest hurt and puff out wide?
When i walk down the street with this woman by my side.

She's mine! I'm waiting for the love of my life,
to walk down the aisle and say she'll be my wife.

She's mine! She said "i do"
Then i turn to her and say "i love you"!

She's mine! She turns to me and says "i'm yours"!
Now i'm just being picked up off the floor.

She's mine! And i don't even care,
people see me as a man grizzly bear.
This lady makes me want to be, the best version of being me.

I'm hers, she's mine, until the end of time.

                      SHE'S MINE!

Fathers Day
Jackie Mead Jun 2022
A day of joy.
We see our children, girls and boys.
They bring our grandchildren and we get out the toys.
Love and laughter fills the room.
Then when everyone's gone, my spirits descend into gloom.
There is just one person missing, and that is my dad.
One special person I miss every day but the worst time of all is Father's Day.

Happy Fathers Day, Joe, wherever you are. ❤️
Still difficult, 6 years later.

In the still of the Night
Jackie Mead Apr 2018
In the still of the night
A Pale Moon casts its light
It comes and goes, goes and comes
Like it is playing with us as it safely guides us home

One minute the Moon is there to be seen, in its fullest glory
The next hidden behind a cloud, like it’s a character acting out its own story
The moonlight is just bright enough to guide us home
Letting us know as we walk in the dark that we are not alone

We walk and talk, holding hands, laughing with our friends
The Moon continues its game of hide and seek, dipping behind the clouds
It is not long before it’s back taking a peep, ensuring our safe-keep
Guiding us safely home, to our houses in the street, once there were street lights to guide us home
Now I’m glad to say that conserving energy means you are honoured to witness nature coming out to play

The Moon tonight is pale and round it looks very small in the sky and its colour is milky white
The clouds are shades of white and a little bit of grey
I ponder what the clouds will be like tomorrow when the Moon goes in and the Sun comes out to play
Will the grey in the clouds disappear, giving way to blue and warmth?
Will they darken every hour resulting in a downpour?

Nature is perfect in everything it does, wrapping its arms around us all, in one big happy hug

Being There
Jackie Mead Sep 2018
I'll be there in the morning when the sun rises
I'll be there throughtout lifes little surprises
I'll be there in your darkest of hours
I'll be there at times when life turns sour
I'll be there as our children grow
I'll be there to reap the love from the seeds we have sown
I'll be there as we grow older together
I'll be there by your side, my love, forever and ever
,
Jackie Mead Oct 2019
At the start of another Autumnal day.
When the sun has not yet risen and the suns heat is still weak.
The fog comes out to.play; hanging in the sky coating everything in a dense hazy mist.
Chimney pots on top of houses, usually can be seen, as well as hillsides in the distance usually a bright verdant green.

The fog swirls and thickens, dims the natural light.
Hiding tops of trees, chimney pots and hillsides of green from your sight.

Slowly the sun begins to rise and cast a welcome glow.
The white clouds become tinged a pale orangey yellow.
The sun begins to find its warmth burning its way through the haze.
The fog is losing the battle, the sun is winning today.

The bright red sun is shining through.
And is such a wonderful sight at the start of another wonderful Autumnal day.
A beautiful sight on my way to work on Tuesday.
The sun was rising late, I had to stop and take pictures.
I love nature.

Colours of Spring
Jackie Mead Apr 2018
I walk the river down one side and travel back the other.
I watch the people walk their dogs and children with their mother.
I see the beauty along the course, birds nesting in the trees,
swans swimming with their young,
the fast running water of the weir,
the blueness of the sky,
the yellowness of the sun.
I see the colours of the earth, surrounding us in nearby fields,
where farmers have ploughed the soil the colour is earthly brown.
The field next to it is a blaze of green,
what the brown field will yield is yet to be seen.
Flowers starting to open their colourful heads, Daffodils, Primroses, Tulips , Bluebells  Snowdrops, Crocuses and Hyacinths, in various shades, of Yellow, Red, Blue and White, it really is a beautiful sight.
The warmth of Spring starting to generate various shades of Red, Blue, White, Yellow and Green
The Palatte of Spring is a riot of colour and truly wonderful to see
Don't you just love Spring

Gluten Free
Jackie Mead Mar 2018
Oh no I hear you cry
Is it contagious just walk on by
I can't imagine how it must be
To have to eat my food Gluten Free

It must be horrid, it can't taste nice
Do you live by just eating rice
I think i'll give it a miss if you don't mind
I like my bread as you see not made with Xantham as its Gluten Free

So keep your GF and I'll raise you some wheat
Here have some wholemeal bread it's my treat
How about some pasta with sauce let's put you to the test, I'll just add some spice or lemon zest
I bet its not real, she won't be able to tell
It surely won't harm her if I make hers the same as mine

Oh dear why are you in such pain, I felt sure you wouldn't notice when I put you to the test
I'm very sorry my lovely I'm sure it will soon pass by
Next time we'll eat GF when you next come by

In the meantime let's raise a glass of cheer I bought your favourite glass of beer
This is my dearest friend and neighbour she means we'll but can't understand the meaning/ idea of eating GF. I've recently developed an intolerance and eating GF really does help for me it's now a lifestyle, she'll get used to it eventually

Becoming a Sailor
Jackie Mead Jan 2018
Back in the day a boy would run away
Feeling very bold, he would head towards a dock, stow away in the hold.

After 5 days at sea and feeling very hungry he would show himself to the crew.

First he would get a beating then he would get some tea, finally he would be put to work out upon the sea.

The boy would become a man, sailing the seven Seas.
Eventually being given a boat that he has full command.

He and his crew would become very tight and have each others back should they get in a fight.

They set course on a map, no technology or Sat nav to send them on their way.

They used the Stars and Planets as their guide, using the Milky Way or Pluto and Saturn to chart the destination of their ride.

2 days now until they reach shore who knows what awaits them when their feet hit the ground.

Hard to tell what lies await what new vegetable or fruit will be their fate.

Will it be potatoes or tobacco this time, who will be around to tell them of it's name, is the island inhabited does it have a name?

Are the locals friendly will they offer food or will they be unfriendly and threaten to raid the boat.

Strip the Sailors of their food, their wordly possessions and their coat.

Tis for sure being a Sailor back in the day, was not fun it has to be said but definitely turned you from boy to man.

When you returned to your home land after many years at sea, it most likely seemed very foreign and even unfriendly.

The journey from boy to man to sailor now complete what is there left to do but sit back, get your pipe out, rest up your feet.
Inspired by Lior Gavra's new book Bittersweet well done Lior I love it.

Holding Hands
Footprints in the sand
Bodies entwined
Connected Body, Heart and Mind

Nurturing our seeds, watching them grow
Tending their every needs, learning to let go

Crying over lost loved ones
Hugging each other tight
Making their favourite supper
Waiting up at night

Tenderness, lust and desire
Encouraging loved ones to reach higher and higher

Creating memories
Washing away miseries
Catching them when they fall
Being there with your loved ones, through the long haul

We may argue and disagree, though i would never cause you pain
You are my light and dark
You are my sun and rain
From you, my darling, i cant refrain

Missed very much by your Mummy and Daddy on earth
We did not get to hold you and whisper your name
We did not get to watch you run rings around your brother and call his name
We did not get to be proud Grandparents and watch you grow
But  Two Stars came and shone one day the result is one that did remain,  now Alfie has an earth brother Roman's his name
Two Stars your family still think of you dearly and cherish your memory
We wish we could have held you and kept you in our care
All we asked was for God to love you until one day we can all be there

Halycon Days
Jackie Mead Jun 2018
Oh what a scene
Cricket being played on a field of green
Eleven players per team all dressed in whites
What a fabulous, glorious sight
Bowlers bowl, Batsmen bat
Umpires keep the score, was he out, "howzat"
Bowlers aim not too high, not too low
Bowlers bowl not too fast and not too slow
Batsmen notching up the runs
Receiving the ball at full speed, hitting the ball to the boundary for a four
If their lucky they will hit it for six, over the boundary bar
A coin is tossed for who bats first, the losing team defending
Six ***** per over, 50 overs per inning
Who scores the most is the team that is winning
A few rules to abide
Keep your leg to the side, dont get caught leg before wicket
Bowlers of pace, try to keep the ball away from the batsmans face
If you are caught out before you score, a duck will appear on the scoreboard
A century is of course one hundred runs, simply known as a ton
Then comes a break for afternoon tea, sandwiches and cakes all freshly baked
The second team step up to the mark
For this typically English game in the park
Families attend from far and wide to watch the battles of the two cricket sides
Battling it out on a field of green, halcyon days continuing
Inspired by tonight's evening walk, field full of cricketers, Love cricket, it is so typically English, the only game I know that supplies an afternoon tea of cakes, quiche, sandwiches, teas and coffee for the players as well as spectators, brings back very happy memories.

Monday morning blues
Jackie Mead Sep 2017
Monday morning, running late, not a good start to the week
Can't find the keys to the car, where are they now surely they can't be far.
Keys located, off we go, traffic is moving very slow
Cars are bumper to bumper and stopped at all the lights, parents dropping children at the school gates.
Weather, of course, it's raining now but it will get better at half past eight.
Pull into the car park, someone's in my usual space, now I have to walk further and must therefore up my pace.
Switch on my PC, it's laughing at me now, the computer says No!
No emails for you today, in fact, I'm running slow, nothing much will work for you, you may as well go home.
It's two thirty and still no machine to work on, I'm writing poetry on my phone to post on HP later on, whilst IT run around scratching their heads, we think your PC may be dead.
You think! it's only half past four another half an hour and I'll be out the door.
Nothing much accomplished today, you can't do much when your machine won't play.
actually was my day today, i don't normally work a Monday and everything went wrong before i left home, mislaid glasses, keys turned up in work and my PC that IT were meant to be working on las Thurs & Fri was still not working, spent all day mostly without the PC, which means I can't really do my job, so doodled on my phone Coffee Shop and this poem.
I'm not a slacker so it frustrates me when i don't get my work done.

AM I A POET?
Jackie Mead Jul 2018
I wonder if I  truly am a poet?
I put pen to paper and write some verse.
Whatever comes into my headfirst.

Does that make me a Poet, I ponder?

I consider what i write and what does it mean?
Am i truly any good i wonder, is that still to be seen?

I write about things I see, try to capture it well, if possible a little story I tell.
I write about my feelings for my loved ones present and past.
About my marriage, children and grandchildren and how we have a blast.

Does this make me a Poet I wonder?

I write about daily happenings in the news, some horrific stories, some written to amuse.

Am I truly a Poet?

What makes a Poet good?

Is it clarity of verse
Putting others not you first
Is it being able to write short burts, Haiku style
Long stories that make people forget for a while

I guess what i am trying to say
Is, do you put pen to paper to have your say?
Write some lines in a journal every day?
Write some verse, no matter how short?
Do the lines rhyme, of a sort?

Then welcome my friend

You are a Poet

You should celebrate and let everyone know it.
A question i have been pondering for a while, as i struggle to write anything good.

D Raven is my name
Jackie Mead May 2018
Draven – D-Raven is my name
I’m well known of course, I have found fame, I am written of in novels and poetry, everyone knows my name.

Over time I have had many different names Vlad and Dracula the most popular by far.
My face is pale white and from time to time I have gotten in fights, my face shows the scars.

I long to roam on my own but from time to time I gather in a brood, we drink and smoke, jump out on folk and generally get up to no good.

D-Raven, I am also d-riven, see what I did?
I am driven to culture the blood from any Human R.I.P’d.

The Human body must be warm, of course, cold blood just won’t do!
Be careful stay out of my way, the next victim could be you!

I nip the neck with my Fangs, that’s teeth to you, they are particularly long and sharp and pierce right through the skin, to the large artery within, which the blood flows.
Watching the victim go pallid and weak, gives me a very warm glow.

By day I sit high up in the sky in trees and buildings, legs slung over the ledge.
Looking for the next victim, whom to make my pledge.

Watching the Humans down below playing and toiling, making their own pledge, trading their souls for a few pennies more.
To buy food, clothes, shoes, maybe purchase a car.

They do not know I exist amongst them, and I like to keep it that way.
They won’t even know before they die, I never look them in the eye.
From the back I approach, hand around their throat.
It’s only afterwards that I stand back, look at them, take them in and gloat.

Sometimes I see beauty, staring back at me, and I take the time to admire; but mostly I see ugliness and I’m glad they have expired.
If I ever thought that perfection existed, I would quickly exit out of this business.
Alas Humans strive for perfection, but it is not a winning aim, so for now there is no end to my killing game.

I continue to roam this earth, day and night, every now and then I reveal myself, in a prank to cause fright (it’s how I entertain myself).
People see and immediately flee, screaming and running away from me, I chuckle and laugh at the fuss I have caused, it lightens the load that I carry, makes me feel.

Have I said I’m handsome of face, at least so I am told, I am also charming, witty and very bold.
I married once, a lady, I met the same day we wed, our marriage did not get old.
She told a tale of lies to get me in her bed, then my one love, my only desire fell head first into a fire.
I’ll never make that mistake again, single I will stay, no one else to think about, I like it that way.

People assume that I can’t be happy but all I can do is laugh and sigh, then calmly reply “500 years and I want more, I love this business of blood and gore.

Pen and Paper will ensure I exist for all eternity, written into stories and poems that rhyme, my name will change, of course, from time to time.
Essentially it is true, that I am through and through a Vampire, who exists to consume the living, think of it as my way of giving, back to society, maybe you should consider me hired, taking the blood of the less desired.

I long for someone to hold my hand, tell me stories of love and desire, if I found someone who could love me for who I am, I would happily retire.
I would take a home down in the depths below the ground, where the Devil stokes the fire.

For now, though, D-Raven is my name, Vampiring is my game (and I’m quite good at it)
Completes a trilogy, A Vampires Life, Walking on the Darkside and D Raven is my name.
Hope you enjoy

How do i begin,
To say the thoughts i am thinking,
To describe the way i feel,
To paint a picture with words,
To make myself heard.

How do i start,
To say with all my heart,
The way i feel about you,
To paint a picture true,
To be at one with you.

How do i commence,
By not sitting on the fence,
To describe the way i feel,
To say i love you sweetheart,
With all my heart,
And have from the very start.

Here, i will give it a go, with my heart, body, mind and soul
To tell you, i desire the heat of your fire
To tell you, i desire, the touch of your flame
To tell you, i desire, the feel of your heat

I long for your touch,
Your kisses,
Your words, whispered.

You hold my hand,
A light touch,
It brands your name on my heart,
I know ive loved you from the start.

When is it too soon to say those three words,
To tell you how i feel,
To let you know my love for you is real.

When is it too soon, to say i love you
Is it to soon, to say these three words,
To paint a picture with words,
To make myself heard.

It kicks off tonight, super excited.
All of the wives are clearly delighted.
First game of the season Arsenal vs Leicester, for 90 minutes the heroes will battle.
The first three point to the winner  and top of the table.
And so it will go every weekend from Friday to Monday right through to next May.
We'll be accompanied on Saturdays  with MOTD, Gary, Alan and Gaby.
They'll discuss and advise on the game of the day, was the ref right did he give the game away.
Of course everyone has their favourite team, Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea. Man City, Liverpool, Everton to name but a few, West Ham and West Bromwich Albion too.
Bets will be made, dream teams created, limbs tattooed, all appetites sated.
Old heroes bemoaned and overrated, records broken new heroes created.
At the end of the season about the 19th May Champions crowned, memories filed, holidays booked, we can all breathe a while.

As I was walking
Jackie Mead Feb 2019
As I was walking along the bank of the Canal, fog covering the ground like a cloak
I thought I heard the jolly sound of a Frog croak
The Canal usually bright blue of colour
Was an unusually dark eerie, discolour.
I carried on walking towards St David’s Station, my destination
Whilst composing a Poem with my imagination
In front, I could not see more than 10feet ahead
But I swear a saw the wings of an albatross, overhead.

To the left as I walked, green open fields
I suddenly heard the sound of a Swan squeal
To my right, the Canal cast a dark and dreary backdrop
The banks of the Canal usually lined with Trees, you could barely see their tops.

Fifteen minutes in and I began to feel the warmth of the sun, hitting my heels
The path ahead lit by the warm soft glow of the sun, giving the start of the day an ethereal feel
Twenty minutes and now the fog begins to lift
My spirits are beginning to change, uplift.

Twenty-five minutes have now gone by and I have almost arrived, it usually takes me twenty-three
The fog has lifted and now I can see, exactly was happening around me
I could see people walking their dogs, walkers walking and runners jog
The Trees on the banks of the Canal have burst through the fog.

I could see People at the start of their day, some stop you and say, “good morning what a nice day”,
Some just smile as you pass them, on your way
Some pass you by, phones to their ears, never catching your eye
Some smile sweetly, a little shy.

When the fog lifts and the Sun cast its rays
You hope it’s going to be the start of a beautiful day
Hope grows therein
Hope for better, warm days, beautiful spring flower displays
The hope for warm sunny days begins.
My walk this morning

Life of a Slug
Jackie Mead Feb 2019
I don't live life in the fast lane; being a Slug.
I am one of nature's slowest moving insect or bug.
I take all day getting from A to B.
On the lookout for shiny green leaves; for my tea.

Gardeners dislike me, they lay down a blue pill.
The intention to make me very ill.
I will have the last laugh with them yet.
As their beloved Son covets me for his Pet.

Gladly I live to see another day; nowhere to go, nothing much to say.
Moving slowly from A to B; leaving a trail behind me, silvery and slimy.
Living life slowly and cautiously, and that suits me.

I would settle down in front of the tv
My Gran and Grandad in their chairs watching Lucille Ball Show or Fred Astair
At 17 45 the football scores would be read
My Grandad checking them off one by one
Chasing 24 points the top score, fingers crossed for a score draw, eight of them would set you right
Ah this week its out of sight, better luck next week, we'll try again
My Gran would always  bake, buns or a cake
Coffee was my choice of drink with Coffeemate instead of milk I was posh I would think
A slice of sponge to go along I can hear my Gran say "are you going to have a slice today"
Then she would always add" there's 3 eggs in there"
I would smile and say please Gran after all It was Saturday and all was right with the world.

Cities

Cities are *****, grimy places
Full of people with interesting faces.

There's dark hair, blonde hair, red hair, white hair and grey ;  imagine all the colours of a rainbow and then add a few.

There's fair skin, dark skin, olive skin and mellow tones too.

There's small eyes, wide eyes, blue eyes, green eyes, grey eyes and brown; some have 20:20 vision, some hide behind glasses, some wear contact lenses to enhance their sight, some have a world of darkness behind their eyes.

There's large noses, small noses, wide noses, button noses, some hold glasses upon their face, some are cumbersome, some full of grace.

There's clear skin, wrinkled skin, acne skin, damaged skin, translucent skin, soft skin, dry skin, sunkissed skin, sunburnt skin.

There's big ears, small ears, pierced ears, cauliflower ears, ears with rings in to make them wide; some people wear hearing aids to enhance what they hear, some live in total silence.

Some people are tall, some are short, some are able to walk, some need assistance every day to be able to walk even a small way.

There are cyclists and runners on every street, roller skaters, walkers your most likely to meet; add in football, cricket and rugby players too, basketball, rounders, netball, tennis and golf, squash, badminton, swimming and diving, there's such diversity in all that we do.

Libraries and Museums open their doors, sshh be quiet, though it's free to explore.

Shops, coffee shops, hairdressers a plenty, though some of the bigger spaces remain empty; cost of rent is exceedingly high and don't even think about the option to buy.

There's leisure parks to walk and have fun with your dogs, parks with swings and roundabouts for your children who are  young.

Some Cities have rivers, some have canals built to let barges through.

Some Cities have harbours, marinas too, look over the Ocean at a sea that's blue.

All Cities have Universities to provide education to those from home or from far and wide.

Spoilt for choice of courses to attend there's professions of course, doctors, dentists, lawyers and nurses, accountants and vets. There's media, dance, English language and literature, geography, history and maths. There's IT, cookery and drama and how to handle a camera. There's business and entertainment, wedding planning and Latin. Any subject of your choice can be found somewhere around.

You can find comedy clubs, poetry readings, chess clubs, scout clubs, lego groups, cookery classes, sewing classes, reading groups, right outside your door, if you took the chance to look around your neighbourhood and the  time to explore.

Don't write off the City though it may look ***** and grimy in places, it is as you can see, full of interesting people and places.
People are interesting don't you think?

A classic winters day
Jackie Mead Feb 2018
The sky was bright blue
The clouds were white
The sun was shining gold
But not a bit of warmth came from the sun it was still bitterly cold

You dressed in a winter coat, a scarf around your throat, gloves upon your hands
Still the wind came blowing and chilled your bones, your face and ears and even your toes

Walking brisk and quickly the sun began to get stronger and you began to warm
Soon your removing your scarf and gloves as the wind drops and the sun shines and you begin to glow

It's a beautiful day, a classic winter day with the
Sky bright blue
The clouds bright white
The sun shining gold
And now you've warmed up the wind has dropped and your headed for home
Inspired by my walk today,  it really was beautiful out but freezing at the same time

I was there
Jackie Mead Aug 2017
Ouch that hurt, I heard someone shout before darkness descends and I hit the floor.

As I began to regain I heard someone screaming in pain.
Trying to push myself up off the floor  but my wrists they f*ing hurt!
The screamer becoming clearer now as I began to shout.

Before long police and paramedics attending roadside.
Gas and air my hero dealing with pain, not my pride.
Laughing with the paramedics enjoying the ride.

Straight to hospital, blue lights on the way.
Not the worse thing, says the paramedic, to happen today.

June 14th Grenfell Tower fallen, families lost and all of their treasures.
Perspective gently given and received,my pain is real but in small measure.

Angels at the hospital attending my every need.
Cleaning my skin and stemming any further bleeds.

Drs order the x rays 1,2 and 3 both wrists and my elbow to be sure.
Cast on my right arm, thank goodness for that, just one break, no more.

Morphine for pain relief, tiredness over comes me, please just let me sleep.
I'm feeling so sore and tired I could weep.

All those services all that care tenderly given and gratefully received.
How do I know, why do I care, we'll of course it's because I was there.
JUNE, 14TH, I was in a RTA, run over by a motorbike whilst I was crossing the road back to work. 8weeks later, still not back to work, had steroid injection in my wrist yesterday and it feels a lot better today, so fingers crossed it's worked, desperate to return back to work on 4th September.

Their Gift
Jackie Mead Jun 2019
75 years have now passed
The Veterans getting the recognition they deserve, at last.

All now in their ninth decade
Deserving of the honours bestowed and of the parades
Showing us still how very brave they were
Falling from a plane, flying through the air
“We are not heroes”! they all declare
The heroes are the ones that remained,
They gave their lives for your welfare
Those heroes gave their lives so we could see another sunrise

As we watch festivities unfold on T.V.
We are reminded what a Hero can be
Heroes can be of all nations
Heroes can be of all sexes
Heroes can be of all ages
Heroes can be animals

However, watching the Veterans of D-Day
Those Heroes set the bar high
It seems to me all heroes give their lives, by sea, land,
and sky
Blood was drawn and lives lost
At what price? At what cost?

Achieving Freedom and Liberty
For all mankind including you and Me
Doesn’t come on the cheap
Bodies lay piled in a big heap
Victims of gunshots or bombshell
Laying dead or dying where they fell
Survivors forever recalling memories
Lost in their own reverie
Badges pinned proudly to their chest
Urging us to remember, lest we forget

These scenes are unimaginable to someone like me
We were the ones that gained, the ones the Veterans set free
Now in Normandy Cemeteries stand awash, white crosses marking the spot
Where fallen angels lie, some known and the crosses bear their name, whilst some lie in an unnamed plot
In this special year, let us give thanks to all Veterans lost and living
And hope they feel, it was a price well paid, a price worth giving

Their gift, the freedom of humanity, the liberty of mankind

Thank you to all Veterans of WW1, WW2 and other wars that have been fought since.
Here is my tribute to the Veterans of D-Day. To be honest, I believe the Veterans say it best of all and watching them this week has been absolutely wonderful. Still showing us their bravery at 95, I hope I am that active and strong if I am lucky enough to reach their age.

A Young lady called Pru
Jackie Mead May 2018
There was a youn lady called Pru
Who declared she had nothing to do

So she set about putting it right
And got into a bit of a fight

You see she wanted to make it clear
That she had nothing to hide and nothing to fear

She was incredibly rude and loud
What she said hung in the air like a heavy cloud

She wanted to set up a stall, selling buttons to one and all
She seemed to have found her call

But she said to a woman who purchased six small ducks
That the woman was bang out of luck

For small was not her size
From her hips to her big blue eyes

She continued with her speech
That made it clear, small was out of the woman's  reach

The woman began to cry
Pru began to sigh

People began to gather
Everyone got in a bit of a lather

A gentleman happened by
And asked Pru why?

Why did she feel the need, to put the woman down?
Pru began to consider and began to frown

That was not her intention, she was misunderstood
She had just meant that small was no good for the woman's hood

Pru and the woman shook hands
The council provided a band

Someone brought scones and jam for afternoon tea
And everyone sat down to eat at about half past three

Now Pru and the woman are friends
And this short story is soon to end

But first I just wanted to say
Thanks for reading, have a good day
Trouble sleeping

As I lay engulfed in pain, codeine, paracetamol ibuprofen and voltarol my best friends by my side.
I am grateful for the things in life that bring me the greatest joy.

My family cheer me up each and every day.
Just passing by for a cuppa they all say.
Deep down they surely know how much it means to me, thirty minutes of  the day my mind and body are carefree.

A warm bath, radox in, heat patches upon my skin.
The warm water is high, covers my body, the muscle soak leaves my limbs loose and my mind woolly.
Like a drug induced high I feel relaxed and elated, the pain temporarily sedated.

Cushions piled high behind my back, in one position they can't remain.
Move them repeatedly, change their formation searching, searching for the right mix.
Then get it just right and keep it fixed.

Go the walk-in centre people say, meaning well but not today.
I can't walk to the walk-in centre is the only reply I can say.

Looking around whilst on my bed, words flowing through my head.
I am grateful for all that I've got, grateful for my lot.

I've had this before and I'll have it again, whilst it's here the pain drives me insane BUT it's only temporary, it will go away and therefore I can honestly say for that I am truly grateful.
Probably brought from a combination of Running and picking up the grandchildren, neither of which I am willing to give up just yet, so likelihood is it will happen again.

More
Jackie Mead Jul 2017
Always look up and all around never just focus on the ground.
For if you do you will see, much much more than only thee.
When you look only in your hand or at the ground you miss all the more that is around.
You miss the sun shining in the sky, you miss the birds flying by.
You miss the busker on the street, who plays the cello with his feet.
You miss the street artist who sculpts from sand.
You miss the 3piece dance band.
You miss eye contact with another soul who feels the same as you but you'll never know.
You miss the words exchanged with a cashier at their till, which will brighten your day but they never say.
You miss the person who cannot stand and needs a seat to rest their weary feet.
You miss the flowers beginning to grow, brightening the city with their colour.
Looking only in your hand or at the ground instead of looking all around, you miss the more to your day.
So next time your rushing from A to B try looking up and maybe you'll see me as well as thee.
Have a nice day! Have a more day!
Inspired by a visit to London when feeling a bit vulnerable with broken right wrist and damaged left wrist. It forced me to open my eyes and see the More.

Ebb and Flow
Jackie Mead Aug 2018
The River Exe flexes and flows, as the water meanders sometimes fast and sometimes slow.

It opens it's arms and stretches wide, wriggles its toes and opens it's eyes, to greet a brand new day.

It glistens and gleams on a bright sunny day as it tumbles slowly from A to B, everyone smiling at how it flows so freely, making them stop and take some time, helping them find peace, become free of mind.

On an overcast day it appears angry and dark, it sounds so loud, like thunder it roars, making each of us aware of its presence, it can bring down trees and power cables, making us feel very unstable.

The rains fall heavy and the River Table rises, we have done our maths there are no surprises, we have built Canals, Reservoirs and Weirs to contain the extra additional fallen rain.

Still this may not be enough, the River Bank is Mr Tough, it will burst it's banks without a care, leaving us in it's wake, no prisoners it will take.

But the path it flows is lucious and green, it's a beautiful spot very serene, birds and fish swim in its waters, flowers and trees grow by it's side, adults and children play in kayaks and canoes, it's somewhere to go where there are lots of things to do.

As the River Exe Ebbs and Flows sometimes fast and sometimes slow, mimicking the pace of life, sometimes fast and sometimes slow, we all need a place to go, where we can feel peace of mind, relax, sitback and unwind - where do you go to find your peace of mind?

Feeding Frenzy
Jackie Mead Jun 2022
The sound of the sea, a thunderous roar, as it crashes and breaks upon the shore.

The wave has travelled from afar, tossing and turning, gathering speed.
Unaware it will be the cause of a feeding frenzy.

Sat on the beach, enjoying the sun, children playing, having fun.
Above all other noise, a loud squawking can be heard, this, the sound of the Seagull bird.

High in numbers, flying high in the sky, they hover, occasionally they swoop and dive, excited for the crest of the wave, with each rise.

Within the foam, a treasure is found, small fishes are the feast of kings for this scavenging bird.

I sit on the beach enjoying the sun, and all around a feeding frenzy has begun.
The gulls feast on their fishes and children feast on ice cream, both meals considered fit for kings and queens.

Precious Little Butterfly
Jackie Mead Jun 2018
Lying, sleeping on the couch.
Arms outstretched, he has no cares, tumbling blonde curly hair
A whirlwind by day, he is no slouch, for that I can truly vouch.

My grandson not yet turned two.
The apple of his grandads eye.
He will awake again in a few, so much to see and do.
Once awake he will run and fly our precious little butterfly.

We're going on a duck hunt
Jackie Mead Sep 2020
We’re going on a duck hunt; just granny and me!
We’re going on a duck hunt, let me tell you what we see.

We are going to the river, with a bag of stale bread.
Fighting off seagulls and pigeons as they hover above our heads.

We will pass by the riverbanks where grasses and trees grow tall.
Watching and listening to the river as it tumbles, rolls, and roars.

We will see flowers of different colours.  White daisies, yellow buttercups, blue cornflowers, covering the parklands in a dazzling display.
My Granny says seeing the kaleidoscope of colours makes her day!

We will pass by rabbits hopping about their homes of grassy mounds.
Every now and then pricking up their ears; listening to every sound.

We will pass by geese gathered in a gaggle.
Big bottomed geese walking with a waggle.

We will pass by swans gliding with their necks held high.
Several young cygnets tucked in and swimming by their mums side.

We will pass all these wonders of nature as we make our way to the ducks.
Listening for every quack and cluck.

We reach our goal with a bag of bread in-hand.
Throwing the bread to the ducks who say thank you with a “quack” and a “cluck.”
Before you know it, the swans are there too.  Then the seagulls and pigeons “shoosh, go away you!”

Ducks are the best of the lot you see.  They make me laugh; I think they are funny.
No particular reason but my granny says, “It is because I am only three.”

We’re going on a duck hunt; just granny and me!
We’re going on a duck hunt, to feed the ducks their tea.
Ah, the best days are spent with my three-year-old grandson.  It's the little things we cherish.

There lived a young lad called Mark.
Who lived by himself, under a bridge in the Park.

By day he would wander around, alone.
He was lost and lonely with no place to call his own.

Mark, though, had a magic trick.
He could play a good tune with a couples of old cans and a pair of drumsticks.

By day Mark would set up his show.
Tin cans, his drumsticks, a few lights to create atmosphere, give a bright glow.

As the day turned to night and the sky began to turn red
Just as young children were going to bed.
Mark would play his tunes on his cans.
It had the sound of a large marching band.

People would gather around in large crowds.
They would gather in all weather, sun, rain, grey clouds.
People would listen, clap, sing a long, being loud.

People started to leave money in a hat on the floor.
Mark was hoping one day to have enough to rent a place with his own front door.

For now though Mark was happy as he was, by day he was still alone.
This gave him time to think, maybe he would add a saxaphone.
Just rambling

If I were an island...
Jackie Mead Oct 2017
I would hold out my hand
Five fingers all covered in soft white sand
Wash you in bright blue seas
Kiss you with golden sun
Add a sprinkle of cafe and bars for fun

I would caress your cheeks with a light wind or two
I would care for your spirit by offering adventurous activities to do

I would sing  beautiful music to your ears
Make the island safe and happy to chase away your fears
I would add some wildlife a rugged coastline too, maybe even a petting zoo.

I would most of all build a home off the beaten track, so we can get lost, no way of finding our way back.

Once there was a young lad
Jackie Mead Apr 2018
Once there was a young man, who lived from hand to mouth.
Finding work where he could while travelling South.

He had in mind to make his fortune, see his name in lights.
He had a special trick he could do, while riding on his bike.

He pedalled into a new Town one day, and set about to explore.
He began to look for work, by knocking on people's door.

He wasn't very fussy, there wasn't anything he wouldn't do.
From mopping floors and pulling pints to cleaning people's shoes.

One day whilst riding on his bike, his luck was on the turn.
He came upon a circus and travelling merry go round.

He saw his opportunity and knocked upon the door.
Asked if the Ringmaster would let him show his trick upon the floor.

The Ringmaster agreed and found some jugglers, dancers and a lion tamer as an audience for the trick.

The Ringmaster informed everyone the show would be free and to invite anyone else they liked; the show would begin at half past three.

At half past three the lad turned up, riding on his bike.
He pulled a double bogey pike, while standing on his head.

The Ringmaster was delighted it was the best trick he had seen.
He asked the lad to return the following night to perform before the Queen.

The lad was so excited he decided to phone home to invite his Mum and Dad.

The Ringmaster supplied his family tickets and paid their fare.
He put them up at a Hotel overnight and treated them with care.

The lad was top of the Bill that night, following the jugglers and muscle men   in leopard skin tights.

His time had come and in he rode with confidence and no fright.
He took a bow and pulled his wheels back and with a roar stood on his head, turning the handles left then right, he did a 360 degrees.

The crowd were a frenzy and showed their delight.
He rode a lap of honour round the ring on his bike.

Children came up to him to ask him to sign their books and for a photograph of his good looks.

The lad was delighted, his family too, no more mopping floors or shining shoes.

Now his name is in lights atop of the big tent, his name draws in big crowds and the lad never again paid rent.

His family are very proud and again he met the Queen.
This time the Queen with a sword announced the lad was now a Lord.

The lad became a man and duly met his wife, they went on to have four children, all of them learnt at an early age how to ride a bike.

The man grew old and in time passed away but his legacy would always stay; his kids had developed the trick to now include skids.

His name would always be in lights, he would always be known as the lad who developed a double bogey pike while standing on his head.
A little bit of fun writing this. I hope you have fun reading it.

Planes
Jackie Mead Feb 2018
Inanimate objects high in the sky, silently they fly, silently passing you by

Elgantly built, some for speed but mostly built  to cover a need

A need to get from A To B as quickly, cheaply and efficiently

Transporting you from your life at home to another less familiar zone

Some of us like it hot and by the beach, tanning and surfing all day long

Some of us like to be out of reach, isolated in a small hut on a hill, hiking each day is our chosen thrill

Some of us choose a City Break, a short hop to another land with different vibes and different sounds

Some of us fly business class of course, they get the extra room and a pillow to aid your sleep

The majority fly economy stowing your bags at your feet

Whatever your choice its much the same aim, getting away for a break is your game.

You may choose Las Vegas, Florida or France, Iceland, New York or Jamaica, Singapore, Rome or Venice, the world is your oyster.

You may choose to climb a mountain, dive in deep seas, camp by a fire, go see a band, dance by candlelight on the sand.

All of these choices are yours to explore let the Plane whisk you away to these destinations and more.

Your imagination is endless so let your mind roam free, have courage, book your ticket,  choose your destiny
Simples, a plane flew quietly overhead whilst I was out walking lunchtime

Vacation

Winding down, getting ready for fun
Another day at work, almost done

Off soon for a vacation
A short visit to our second favourite nation
First stop Marseille
This is our first stay
Weve been told, a train ride to the top
Views of the Port, your breath will stop

Then further South, we will go
To a familiar place that works itself into your soul
Ramatuelle, St Tropez
One of our most favourite places to stay

From across the bay the Orange Dome is clear, signalling you are near
Luxury yachts in the bay, moored for a week or maybe just the day

The sun beats down on the water, which is glistening
St Tropez has a special sound, if your listening
It's a crazy sound of Mopeds and Smart cars, Moko Jeeps, ambulance noises, people playing on the beach
The noise is not deafening but is truly unique.

During our stay we will relax and unwind, good food, good wine, good sand, good sea
Just unwinding in the sun, me and my loved one
Good friends inviting us into their home, it simply is the best
I can't wait to get there and to truly rest
Not long now, mini road trip starts tomorrow, first stop Twickenham for the Rugby Finals and then a hop over on the Channel tunnel, night stop in Valence Sunday evening , Marseille for two nights and st tropez for 4 nights staying with friends who live there, cant wait over the years it has become home from home

The beauty of nature
Jackie Mead Mar 2018
Nature is a wonder and joy
From tiny creatures to giant beasts
Weather storms from the East
Geysers ready to blow
Snails moving very slow
From microscopic bugs to giant turtles on the beach
Birds flying high and out of reach
Rainbows and Sunsets with bright red skies
Super blue blood Moons and northern lights
Sloths idly lazing in a tree
Bees, butterflies moths and flies pollinating flowers as they fly by
Elephants and rhinoceros drinking at the watering hole
Worms that are bright giving off a glow
Stars twinkling in the dark night
The sun shining strong and bright
Each creature differs in stripes or spots, tusks or horns, hooves or paws
Some have poison in their bodies ready to release in a bite
Some are docile creatures keeping theirselves hidden from sight
You have mountain ranges that go on for miles
Painted ladies making you smile
Whales with humpbacks and Sharks with hammerheads
Rivers that give creatures a place to call their bed
Swans that glide effortlessly and with grace
Flightless birds that can sprint and win a race
Monkeys, tigers, crocodiles and kangaroos
Bears brown and black, Polar that are white, Pandas and Koala too
Roaming plantations not kept caged  in zoos
Coral reefs keeping coastlines safe from waves crashing on the shore
A big wide world for everyone to explore
Waterfalls 1000metres high, water cascading and falling to the ground
Hydrating the grasses and plants that surround
All of this and more can be found if you open your eyes and look around
Take stock of the beauty outside your door
Recycle plastics don't drop them on the floor or overboard at sea, don't fly tip your ******* selfishly
Plant wildflowers in your garden and you will be repaid by a very beautiful colours ablaze
Attracting Bees and butterflies to your home
Teaching your children to respect and admire
Keeping the beauty alight and on fire
For future generations to cherish and see
Keeping nature healthy and robust for eternity
