For the nights
 Jul 2020 D
Simpleton
This one's for the nights that turned into mornings
The ones I never thought would arrive
The sunrises which crept in slowly as I drove towards them
And the ones that crashed through my window as I slept through their brilliance
This one's for the painful nights of no sleep
Ones where the fire burned through my veins
When my muscles twitched and my legs spasmed
And the restless nights when ghosts long passed came for a visit
This one is to acknowledge the nights
And take each one as it comes
I smoked to fill my lungs
to **** the flowers that grew there
the ones you planted last december

Tired eyes by harsh light
I scribble quite lazily
Nothing profound comes

we look at each other like we are just about to kiss.
we look at each other like we see ourselves.

if you can smile
as you pull the knife
out of your back
and choke down the blood
you coughed up,

does that mean you’ve grown
strong enough

or inhuman enough?

is the word absence

And my mother
is the word fear
