how are you?
Gill Aug 2020
my, how tired i am today
how my legs feel sore
and my mind is contemplative
and sad

my, how well did i do today
i would say not so bad
i did the reading and the cooking
and had a little sweat
but as far as my expectations go
my own standard i have not met

my, how must we rest today
i'd say put down all things heavy
your phone, your book
your fear of how you look
to others and to yourself
yes, down
put it down
put
it
down

travel light in your dreams
free your hands
for the next heavy thing
but

at the end of the day
put it down
put it down at the feet of Jesus

a pillow, talks
Gill Aug 2020
arise, arise!
you've been on me all night.
allow my fluff to recover,
be out of my sight.

go out, go out!
out of your room.
get some sun and some sweat,
go pick up a broom.

think not, think not!
of me until late.
you'll come back to me anyways!
hurry on, make haste.

go on, go on!
go ahead with your day.
though i do get lonely,
when you return it goes away.

i see, i see!
you are back, it seems.
come lie your weary head,
i'll carry your dreams.

Permanent Housing

You are not a tenant
in my mind anymore—
You have built a home
in my heart

For sure
Gill Feb 2017
we ask
has the best already happened
we think
it already has
we live
like the best has passed us
we expect
no best to return
we find
nothing familiar new until
we know
that the best has already happened
and the best will happen still
Jesus is heaven's best.

Beneath the Tree
Gill Jan 2017
I was among a list of objects
whose value was of fleeting joy
expecting to give lasting happiness
maybe to a busy lady
or to a lonesome boy

I was placed beneath the tree
and opened—
my wrappers eagerly teared up by hand
yet the recipient's smile
lasted but for a moment
and this I could not understand

I realized I was of tiny worth
compared to the Father's Son
the gift no worldly present can surpass
meant for each and every one

Year Changes
Gill Dec 2016
I've never watched the fireworks
from anywhere but my homebase
although year after year I know
I'm always in a different place

(and I hope you are, too)

how legacy lasts
Gill Dec 2016
the definition of legacy
I never truly knew
until one gathering
an elderly woman came up to us
and spoke out of the blue

she shook my mother's hand real tight
and spoke of my grandfather,
a former colonel and chaplain,
a present friend

to my mother she said:
"I love you because I love your dad"
and to me I knew those words
would stick till the very end

No Indispensable Person
Gill Dec 2016
Sometime when you're feeling important
Sometime when your ego's in bloom
Sometime when you take it for granted
You're the best qualified in the room

Sometime when you feel that your going
Would leave an unfillable hole
Just follow these simple instructions
And see how they humble your soul

Take a bucket and fill it with water
Put your hand in it, up to the wrist
Pull it out and the hole that's remaining
Is a measure of how you'll be missed

You can splash all you want
when you enter
You can stir up the water galore
But stop and you find that in no time
It looks quite the same as before

The moral of this quaint example
Is to just do the best you can
Be proud of yourself but remember
There is no indispensable man

A Test to Best
Gill May 2016
Feel no helplessness
For things you cannot command
The Lord is with your every step;
He will hold you by the hand

Feel no envy
It is but a disguised test
Good things are not meant for you
For the Lord declares only the best

Feel no impatience
For things that lag behind
Because it may get exciting
To know what you are yet to find

Feel no anxiety
Though things are about to fall
Know that the Lord steers us
Through everything and all
"For the Lord is at work within you." - Philippians 2:13

What a Mirror Cannot Do

I stand in front of the mirror
it has seen a lot of me from the start
but is sure is a tragedy
seeing all precious things but the heart

Another Reflection
Gill May 2016
Now we see that water
is a mighty portrayal of love
for not only should it reflect what is beneath but far more Who is above
