Pretty (adj):
1. pleasing or attractive to the eye, as by delicacy or gracefulness;
"Pretty" is a word that's been spewed at you since the day you were born,
A social standard set upon you that you had yet to even hear, but it was being used to describe you instantly;
A "pretty little girl", a "pretty face", "pretty eyes", "pretty smile", "pretty outfit",
Did anyone ever stop to wonder if you'd have a pretty soul?
What about the way you could be brought to tears at the thought of shaming homeless people or victims of abuse, how your heart felt like it was ripping out of your chest when you heard about someone who was struggling,
They didn't seem to care that you tested highest in compassion, they just wanted to know where you got your dress from.
As you grew older the adjective turned from an innocent compliment to what seemed like a snide remark,
The word "pretty" began to eat you from the inside out every time it was said
like you should measure your worth in how delicate others find you;
You stopped accepting "pretty" as a compliment when it turned into an adjective that was only associated with girls that were more than average but less than beautiful,
You stopped accepting "pretty" as a compliment when it became an antonym of strong,
like "pretty" girls were things that would break if you talked too loud, as if loving a "pretty" thing could never be synonymous with loving a durable or sturdy or resilient thing.
D.A. Sharp once said
"You weren't meant to be pretty; you were meant to burn down the earth and graffiti the sky. Don't let anyone ever simplify you to just "pretty"."
And so when someone kindly placed the word in a sentence referring to you you learned to automatically put it into quotations because they were just trying to be nice,
They didn't know they were reducing you to outer beauty, that "pretty" seemed less like a compliment the more it was said, like people couldn't figure out another way to describe you,
As if God hadn't already intricately woven the threads of your DNA, as if he hadn't perfectly tinted every hair on your head to be its crisp burnt color or hand painted the irises of your eyes,
No, "pretty" could no longer cut it.
Because you had been made for bigger and better things,
Those "pretty" eyes of yours will one day see things that God hadn't originally intended anyone to have to see, and those "pretty" hands of yours will have to pick up the pieces of a heartache that God had never wanted you to know and put them back together, and those "pretty" lips of yours are the same lips that will stand in front of sin and tell it that you have chosen Jesus.
Because "pretty" is fine,
but you have been fearfully and wonderfully made, a masterpiece of the Creator.
this won me first place in a spoken word performance!

Dear Maggie Grace,

I find you to be a phenomenal poet. I want to recognize, acknowledge, and express my admiration, for all of your marvelous work, you are a beautiful part of this site and I have selected some of my favorite lines from your work. It is all really spectacular, and I have put my interpretations and thoughts below each poetic phrase you wrote:

Drinking my cold chai tea,
Tears falling endlessly.
-Maggie Grace

This is so vivid and genuine. The reality and physicality captured by these lines is fascinating and incredible. The description of the sensory so simply yet brilliantly put. I love your style of poetry. Also, chai tea is amazing. ;P

“Yes, I’m fine,”
And people believe me,
-Maggie Grace

You bring to focus such an achingly relatable topic. To be so indescribably not fine, but to say it anyway and to have people believe you, it is a unique and unpretty type of pain.

Weaving their web of lies,
Their pain they hide.
Don’t say hurtful things,
-Maggie Grace

I love, love LOVE these lines “weaving their web of lies” such magnificent imagery WOW! And the message you convey is such a vital one. To fight against hurtful words.

Save the teenage girl,
she needs her life,
she needs her everything,
stop bullying.
-Maggie Grace

Bullying is such a global, agonizing problem and you have truly snared the essence of the anguish of being bullied. You are an excellent poet.

I like to wander in the snow, and think about things, like you.
-Maggie Grace

You paint a picture with words here, and so many of us can really connect with that sort of feeling, a pensive mood, pondering another soul in this world. The setting you provide is lovely. “To wander in the snow” how delicate and beautiful.

Maggie Grace,

Thank you for blessing Hello Poetry with your presence. I am proud to call you a fellow poet, I could really feel your soul in the poetic pieces you compose and you have a beautiful soul from what I can tell. Keep writing, because you are a credit to the art of writing. :)

In the centre floats the sun
bringing life and order to the planets
She is that girl
the popular girl that the world revolves around
She brings light and beauty
demanding attention
she is the comparison
to gold and all things perfect
she is inspiration to all the poetry
yet no ones seems to notice
her poison and deceit
her radiation leaking
destroying the world
as she burns consuming
everything in her path

Then there are the planets
those perfect orderly orbs
the unnamed crowd
following their pretty girl
as she orders them about
they follow her hierarchy
numbered better or worse
hoping not to be
at the bottom of the list
the nerds or misfits like pluto
are forgotten and unloved
as she demands attention
from everyone above

Id much rather be a moon
a shining mystery
a tiny forgot speck.
Floating about on my own path
never quite the same,
forgetting about popularity
and its unrelenting chain.
Seen as an evil
associated with black and monsters
yet i’d shine a light down
through the darkness.
You can see its painful craters
the scares of past time
and yet i’d keep on lighting
and moving alone just fine

Id much rather be a moon
free to be myself
I don’t need to be
the spotlight
I’m content with second place.
forgotten by the many
yet remembered by the few.
I don’t need to be the golden girl
Im fine to be silver
for silver moons are much better
than demanding golden sun
Alright I did a guide for the ladies
now here's a little bit for the fellas
now gentlemen it's not easy doing what those ladies tell us
but here's a quick guide to the ladies
hopefully you'll take my advice and heed it because we need more real men lately

Okay if your lady annoys about you about the little stuff
By the way don't treat your girl like a little piece of fluff,
be gentle but tough, be hard but weak
but most of all fellas, be unique

If you stay loyal, treat her like she royal and **** her so good you make her skin boil
then she'll stay with you thru the good and the bad thru the happy and sad times
and no I'm not saying this just to rhyme
but don't be one thing and act like another

If I should have a daughter,

Then this is my vow to her:

Any boy who leaves your soul in pieces

Will be found with his body in multiple pieces

When I am finished with him. :)
I will be a terrifying mother...
I am not pregnant or anything btw, this was just a thought for the future if I ever have a daughter.

Okay, so she and I are not the same religion
Okay, so we are of different cultures
Okay, so we have different beliefs
Okay, her ****** orientation is different than mine
Okay, so she looks different than me
Okay, so she is a different race than me
Okay, so she doesn't believe in the same things as me
Okay, she has different values than me
Okay, so she says unkind things to me
She is still a human though.
And I owe her respect, basic human love, and kindness.
I don't care if we are polar opposites.
I don't care if she spits on my religion
I don't care if she loathes me and is cruel to me
I don't care if we have nothing in common whatsoever
We are both human
And that should be enough
For me to show her
Kindness.
Even if they are a different religion, race, culture, or anything than you, even if you disagree with them on many things, even if they are cruel, you still owe them respect and kindness. Remember, we are all human.

Black, White, Asian, etc.

Gay, Straight, Lesbian, Bi, Transgendered, etc.

Elderly, young, middle aged, immortal etc.

Kind, unkind, strict, crazy, diseased, healthy, wild, careless, cruel, disrespectful, narrow-minded, broad minded, axe murderer, pacifist etc.

Atheist, Christian, Catholic, Lutheran, Jewish, Muslim, Baptist, Buddhist, Mormon, Pagan, Wiccan, Protestant, Presbyterian, Hindu, etc. Regardless what they believe in, all humans deserve love, respect, and kindness. Everyone. No exceptions. Let everyone be who they are, believe what they wish and love them for themselves. Show EVERYONE kindness, because in the end, humans struggle with that. It's time to let go of prejudice and just show respect. :)
Ladies. just a quick question
have you been hurt before or am I just guessing
have you ever wanted to know when he cares about you
truly beyond all reason when he thinks about you?

Well sit back ladies and I'll give you the guide
on how to better understand your guy
First off, men express their affections differently
If he texts you compliments constantly, whether you're at work or not is a sign to me

When he goes out of his way to try to brighten your day
when he speaks from the heart not just to play
when he tells you you're beautiful and makes you believe it
he's really falling for you, trust me I've seen it

If he doesn't ask for anything the first date
if he waits for you to feel comfortable,
and holds you around the waist,
if he cuddles up to you at night, brings you food in the morning
he cares about you girl, so you better not let him go away
