Ember
paper blades
 Nov 2024 Edmond
Ember
guillotine of dried tree pulp,
with eloquent insults adorned,
beheading reputations one by one,
in a single sharp-written bite.

when the pen-wielding executioner drops the rope,

even the mighty end in baskets

at the hand of paper blades.
This face, looking old and wrinkled,
was once shining, glowing and beautiful.
This skin, looking rough and crinkled,
was once fine, smooth, healthy and appealing.

These eyes, sunken with poor vision,
were once pretty, charming.and ebullient.
These hands, shaky, lost precision
were once fresh, smooth with well-manicured nails.

The mouth now with no single tooth
was once full of laughter, bright in its glow.
A life once lived with grace and couth
now whispers stories through the quiet night.

Final Dance
 Nov 2024 Edmond
Eloisa
After lengthy days of torment and grief
Braving the cold, remained the last leaf
Feeling the slightest breeze
She slowly danced with grace and ease
Like a ballerina driven by the sound of her heartbeat
She made her final dance
And with her gorgeous golden autumn wings
She’s now ready for winter’s frigid embrace

i watched a man lie there
between the end of a fire
and the means to another
red. yellow. green.
strangers watching at the stoplight
it doesn't mean anything

motionless and turning blue
last breaths mean nothing -
when you're living on concrete
"look away, cross the street"
"eyes down, windows up"

cardboard signs
winter coats
shopping carts
broken totes

flashing lights
ticking clocks

i watched a man lie there
and i never got to see him get back up.

You make me itch
Like a wound half healed
I scratch and pick.
Sideling up to you,
trying to sneak back into love
I almost do.
keyword I
not you.
You make me itch
Now look I'm bleeding again.

Making love in the afternoon underneath a blue sky, that's free,
That's you and me baby.
Kissing your fair skin, every freckle on your face.
You taste like sunshine, strawberry wine, and ***.
You smell like wildflowers and sweat.
You wreck my senses, break my defenses.
I am lost in the clouds in your eyes.
Making love under a blue sky.
That's free, that's you and me baby.
Absolutely free.
Just you and me.

Seven minutes in heaven
A game kids use to play
I got my turn one warm summer day
It was meant as a joke
Just kids being mean
Sweet Susie Cooper
When I was only thirteen
I felt sorry for her, locked in a closet with me
The geek, the dork, full of anxiety
Six long minutes together
Alone in the dark
Then from out of nowhere I felt a spark
Just before the door opened
Sweet Susie, She kissed me
And broke my heart

Not fine

If she's an ocean I want to be drowned
If she's a guitar  I want to be the string
If she's a dance I want to be the music
If she's a chorus I want to be the melody
If she is the vocals I want to be her lyrics
If she was mine then my heart would be fine
sticked to it
