Free your Mind
Free your Mind
is such an empty phrase
if you are unaware of the ways
in which your mind is not free.

Free your Mind,
allow it to be itself
and to achieve it's potential
while still maintaining a sort-of
Wu-Wei style of Control; Self-Discipline.

Free your Mind;
that is Enlightenment
that is Salvation.

Be your own Shaman;
Free your Mind.

Tao and Zen
A simplistic paradox;
Infinitely finite and finitely infinite.

Now and Never,
Once and Forever.
Logical and Mythical
Real and Illusion.

Reality is all of these things
yet is it none
for these are but words
which oversimplify, by definition.

Reality is a state of mind.

Nothing can convey the true vividness of Reality
except the whole experience of Life itself.

Art tries and comes close
and is a sort of Temple in the Mind
to the once and always infinite;
the secular Divine.

Inexplicable and intelligible
Ineffable and described.
Secular and Holy
All and None.

There is a pattern here
of polarity as unity
of duality as singularity
of simplicity as complexity.

Humans make of simplicity, complexity
and of what's singular we divide.
Of a unity, we polarize.
There is a pattern here.

Reality and all it's subsequent domains
are both holographic and tangible.
It is a paradox of obvious nature,
with an obvious answer hidden by Mind.

It is what it is.
Live it as such.

Dream
New guitar-only instrumental song:

https://soundcloud.com/apexparadigm/dream

The "A" sections are 4/4, with a progression of:
| : Cm---Ab---Gb---Eb-Db-Cm---Ab---F---G--Db : |, or
| : i VI bV III bII i VI iv v bII : | (as I like to think of it)
The "B" sections are a measure of 15/8 alternating with a measure of 7/4.
The guitars play either 5 3s or 3 5s for the 15, and then a groove in 7/4 in between.
The guitars trade off which is playing the 3s and 5s.
Harmonically, the compound time section is just a static Cm.

Written in a few moments, and then recorded in the course of half an hour as a sketch.
The title is somewhat arbitrary, but I do have my reasons.
Enjoy!

Questions and comments welcome.

A Monk, on Schedules
"It's good to have a schedule, 'cause then you'll have at least pseudo-legitimate excuses not to do things you want to do even less than what's scheduled. It can also be nice to have a regular rhythm in Life other than your heartbeat and breathing, which, if you're like me, go overlooked enough as it is."

"If I need more rhythm in my life, I play drums."

"You fancy yourself a percussionist too, eh?
Well, for a fellow clock, you're pretty **** sharp!
What the hell you talkin' to me for? You got it already."

"Just finish tuning that guitar already. 'Open Z minor,' right?"

"It's 'drop go-****-yourself,' actually. Your mom's favorite."

"Funny, your mom loves it when I bang with my eyes closed."

"Alright, both of you: shut it before I leave both of your moms beggin' for more. After last time, they sure as **** know we bassists go deeper."

"As the frontman and vocalist, all I have to say is that worthy ladies appreciate the guys who are confident and good with their mouths, so y'alls gotta be sure to get in on those backup vocals! Also, before I forget: please ask your moms about my Funkadelic records. When things have gotten a little too freaky, I tend to be in a hurry. Whips, latex, chains, *******, ball-gags, belts, oils, sandpaper, rubbing alcohol, vinyl, blowtorches, candles, wine.. you know how it is: it can be hard to remember everything you leave in the locker at the end of a long day at the gym!"

"Hah, I'm sure. But, like I was saying.. we need to schedule more gigs."

"I already scheduled some more with your m-"

"I know. She told me."
Monks, Court Jesters, Fools, my imagination, what's the difference anymore?

In all seriousness, my drumfiend of a friend is hands-down my favorite clock ever.

A Lesson of Dionysus
I remember when I discovered
what it meant to sit with Dionysus
in a swaying room
talking in tongues.

Though some may call it foolish,
I feel that I am more wise
for being able to recognize
the taste and feel
of Poison.
It's nice being a lightweight.
Delicious, homemade, spicy scrambled eggs,
good-*** coffee with some organic milk spilled in it,
and a rather strong Screwdriver (orange juice+*****);
not to mention reading and writing a poem or a few
all the while listening to some familiar Music, too.

*Breakfast of Champions!

A perfect start to another Day in the Life.
Chillin' this morn' with my cat and dog.
They try to teach me lessons, and I stubbornly decide not to take notes
but then again, they do the same.

I love my Life
when it's on my own terms;
it only ever isn't
if I disallow myself to be myself.
Sometimes I get an overwhelming urge to go out in public,
but then I am abrasively reminded why it is
that I prefer the limited seclusion I so enjoy:

I can refine my skills, meditate, read, play games, stretch, or even just sleep.
In any event, it's still far more enriching
than dealing with some of the cesspools of Public:

(A regrettably large percentile of)
People are just ******* *******;
inconsiderate, narcissistic,
superficial, vacuous
morons.

Some take it to physically sickening levels of sheer gratuitous idiocy.
As if a badge of honor;
some are quite foolish,
others are outright fools,
and not in a good way.

I'd call them Sheep,
but that is much to derogatory to the sheep.
Perhaps Swine,
but those too are to well mannered to be called 'people',
many could be said to have finer taste, as well.
This is merely my opinion.
I find that the company I hold is all the socialization I really need; too much more is overexposure.

It's a funny sort of Understanding
when One postulates an assertion
based wholly upon interpretation
and then proceeds to refuse to allow
the reply of the Subject
before forming subjective conclusions.

So what if you're being facetious?
I can take a joke;
and if I'm the subject of the joke,
at least I'll get the context,
if it is, in fact,
a valid hyperbole to draw.

If, as you claim,
"Reality doesn't cease to exist
just because one choses to ignore it,"
then why, I must inquire,
would you send that note
and then not allow a reply?

I see a Jungian pattern here!

If you take
all of what you see
to heart so readily,
then I fear for your sanity;
I anticipate
your exclusivity.

All I do
in this particular medium
is put ideas out there,
hence the title
"Philosomancer;"
as I have said before
(not that anyone cares to investigate)
I don't necessarily subscribe
to the notions I consider and write down,
they simply provide a map
of where I am,
of where I've been,
and, perhaps,
in Time,
a notion
of where I'm going;
a truly powerful piece of information to have.
I have three messages to which I cannot reply because the sender disallowed communication 'twixt themselves and me. Pity. I love earnest discussion. Seems that sets me apart rather than unifies me with others.
Curiouser and curiouser!

"Uuh, dude, your Hubris is showing.

but now you're just being a ****.

Hold thy beloved charientisms,

You don't exactly seem to understand

you propagate so 'knowingly,'
as if a monkey with his own ****,
but, if you do realize what you say:

Well, which are you:

a tactless, spiteful,
foolish hypocrite,

or

an affectatious egoist
of a hypocrite?

I'd wager
an unhealthy balance
that it's both.

I've seen it for years.

You assume a lot

There you go again,
borrowing other people's ****

and get all high and mighty, entitled, and condescending.

Last one on the bandwagon,
first one to throw a stone;
you're a real ******' winner!

All you tend to do
every time I chill with you
is berate others- oh, I meant "advise" others,
who may well be better off than you,
for having many problems
which you either could not understand,
or with which you find yourself,
you ******* Fool.

Every time I wonder
if I've become too indignant
as a direct result of your antics,
you remove my self-doubt
and reaffirm my reservations
by eating all my ******* cheese
or talking **** on my friends
behind the back of whoever it is
who has their back turned at the moment.

When will you learn?
When will you mature?

I guess nothing changes
if we tolerate **** in our faces.

Tread lightly, Elephant,
for you tread 'pon thin-*** ice."
It takes one to know one, *******.

I add that so as to not forget that I've been that ******* too.

is learn from it
that I may preclude such folly
in the future.

Prediction [Forecast]
Sometimes it is impossible to predetermine
what it is that will be a good Idea by tomorrow;
in fact it is rare to have such powers of Forecast.

I do not call it Prediction;
for a Prediction is to "predefine", literally,

whereas a Forecast is a reasonable Estimate

A Science and an Art; Mythic Reasoning.

I will not deny the possibility of Prediction,
Prediction would indeed be a grand gift,
I simply forecast that it isn't very likely at all.

They, who walk all over others
are always suprised to find themselves toppling
when the treadupon manage to drag themselves out from below them.

If you are among the treadupon,
as we all are, in one sense or another,
seek to assist they who find themselves toppling
despite it all.

We're all in this together.
Tread not upon others, nor allow thyself to be tread upon.
"Neither a borrower nor a lender be."

Seek not
to put thyself ahead of others,
nor to put thyself behind any other,
but, rather, to establish
that every individual and group
resides firmly upon an edge
of consciousness-
of transcendence-
of philosophy-
of experience-
of happiness-
of progress-
of Life.

That is the path we,
as the Human species,
must take if we are to quell the sadistic demon
known only as "Humanity,"
and transmute that energy into something we've long since forgotten-
if indeed we ever knew it at all.

This is a challenge
to cooperate and transcend cultural bias.
This is a call to action,
and that action is an end to intentional war;
political, economic, religious, social, and personal.

This is a plea
for us to seek edification within ourselves and everyone.

Wabi and Sabi
There are two philosophical terms
that come from Zen and Japanese Ceramics:
Wabi,
     and
            Sabi.

'Wabi' refers to the flaws of a thing that give it the character it has;
the distinctive feature that makes it what it is.
It could be asymmetry, it could be a crack formed during the creation process.
It could be the thing made by your kid in art class, or by you, even;
those things are crammed with Wabi.

Wabi: Flaws created that individualize, identify and make possible sentimental attachment.

'Sabi' refers to the effects of Time on a thing, showing it's age;
the erosion and change that are inexorable through Time.
It could be the landscape of a foreign planet, or the holes in your jeans.
It could be your tattoos, scars, or psychology.
It could be the scratches on your truck, or the rusting paint you think looks cool.

Sabi: Flaws resulting from being so lucky as to survive long enough to endure things.

Both wabi and sabi lend to a thing Character.
They provide a foundation for relation as well as identity.
They are matters of perspective and thus are subjective.
A perfectionist denies the existence of these,
A romantic says they are all that there is.

As One becomes more open to these notions,
everything becomes a thousand-fold more beautiful.

Nephthys
Every evening, she slips over my world
effortlessly extinguishing the light of day
yet illuminating so very much-
Night is upon us.
Her touch and cool breath soothe the pains of life.
The silver albedo of the moon throws waves of pale light
which break and crash on all we are and perceive:

Night and I lay together on the grass
looking up at millions of years ago

She leans over to me as if to kiss me on the cheek
and my eyelids become heavy
and will no longer tolerate my futile resistance.

I drift to sleep for what I swear is but a second
then startle awake in cold sweat and fervid confusion to find
that she has gone. Now it is morning.
She left no trace behind save for the chill still in flight
O, how I long for our rendezvous tonight.
This poem is from over a year ago, I just decided I oughtta upload and share it.

Life
Sometimes
I feel that life is a gift that I don't deserve.
While there is abundant beauty and infinite wonder,
there is so much pain, suffering and despair.
While I wish the pain would subside,
I know such a desire is fruitless
as existence requires suffering, or it at least certainly seems that way.
Every action and non-action propagate ripples which may never calm.

Life is a paradox:
Why? Why not? How? How could it not?
Illusory, yet real. Constant, yet with cessation.
Joy, pain, excitement, dread, disappointment, elation, fear, birth, death, now, never

So much that seems wrong to one person
all done just because our circumstance binds us
to things we'd rather do without.

So frightening is the notion of death, yet so painful is the concept of life.
Sometimes death seems more comfortable and desirable than life.

Lost in thought, found in confusion;
I think my life would be a gift better utilized by someone else.
I feel like a failure. A plague. A source of disdain and pain. Confusion.
Mostly to myself, but I've seen the effects of it on others, as well.
Sometimes I hate life too much to live
but some flame yet burns within me
demanding that I feed it oxygen and inspiration
that causes me to yearn for yet another breath.

Besides, what if I were to die tomorrow?
I might as well live today
while I still have the chance.
This probably sounds worse than it is.
It is only an expression of a transient and powerful feeling I'm sure we all get from time to time.

Tao Te Ching - 41
A masterful One hearing of the Tao
immediately begins to embody it.

An average One hearing of the Tao
half believes it and half doubts it.

A foolish One hearing of the Tao
laughs out loud, and yet
should fools not laugh,
it wouldn't be the Tao!

Thus t'is writ:
The path into the light seems dark,
the path forward seems to go back,
the direct path seems long,
true power seems weak,
true purity seems tarnished,
true steadfastness seems changeable,
true clarity seems obscure,
the greatest seem unsophisticated,
the greatest love seems indifferent,
the greatest wisdom seems childish.

The Tao is nowhere to be found,
yet it nourishes and completes all things.

Reinforcement
Negative Reinforcement
is much easier to be inspired to administer
but isn't a shadow of a trace as effective as
Positive Reinforcement.

Funny how, in Life, the easiest ways out
are almost always the least rewarding.
"Don't leave any marks," she says
as I nip playfully at her neck;
"It's unprofessional," she mutters
while squirming from the waltz of my lips,
and at the dance of my fingertips;
everything was electric
and it was great,
truly breathtaking-
at the time-
but that time-
has passed;
sacrificed;
killed.

If only One
so edified, dark, and **** in Her ways
would grace me with Her Time and Temple;
whilst true to Herself
upon Her unfolding Path,
that I may also be true to my Self
upon my unfolding Path.

Truly, that would be
a Dream come true
and the Moon would stop
and stand still for us.

Though,
think not that I seek merely a toy,
that I want someone for mere fun;
this is not a question of mere Lust:

I want Love.
I want to feel Love.
Truest of Love;
Metaphysically,
as well as
physically;

I
want
someone
who would make it seem
as if the Moon stands still for us;

Alas, though a gleam,
it doth indeed seem
to be merely a Dream

even some G Phrygian sometimes- dominant.
Naturally, there's also some blues scale licks.

Mostly in 4, but some parts are in 7;
others are in 5, while yet more are in 6
(which is arguably just 3, but I venture to argue all rhythms can be more easily conceptualized as combinations of 2s and 3s. Then, one may argue that it's all just 1s, but now it's just getting nit-picky.. think of it however works for you.)

Death is a wondrous thing:
not in that I envy the dead
but in that it so defies language.

Death, of itself, is a rather dull topic. Uninteresting.
But the implications of the asymmetrical nature of Life
reflect many of those we theoretically deduce and induce of the Universe itself.

We, and all the things around us,
are but spontaneous expressions and manifestations
of that which defies description.

We arise, we exist, and we return again.

It defies description not because no one has experienced it,
or because we don't try to translate it when we do experience it,
but rather because no one has the capacity
to translate this experience
into the languages we happen to use
such that
it can be shared with others
much less
become common knowledge.
(Assuming also that others would be willing and able to understand)

In fact, I feel that we've all died already.
Maybe once, maybe an infinite number of times.
We just can't seem to recall it,
and even if we do,
it mocks us with it's ineffability:

I feel that death is the inevitable night
from which one awakens
at the dawn of the day of one's Life.

Incentive
The primary obstacles preventing One from following One's Heart
seem to be the incalculable ******* excuses in One's head
ultimately serving to justify a lack of proper effort-
to justify stagnation, complacency, and laziness.

Overcome them or be overcome by them.
You shall never know if you never try.

One who doesn't try
precludes any chance of future success.
One who doesn't care
is unworthy of what success may otherwise be actualized.

Take the incentive to cultivate the Mind.
Have the courage to follow your Heart.
Have the Heart to help others do the same.
Experimentation is important;
not only scientifically,
but also to find out what works for you, personally,
as well as what you enjoy, personally.

Martinis and Heavy Metal
Seemingly contrary,
but the cognitive contrast
lends to the ironic truth
that two parts Gin to one part Vermouth
and some pimento stuffed Olives
in very slightly copious amounts
lend themselves well
to the playing of
Heavy Metal.

Be not immoderate
about thy moderation!
Had a band practice for the first time with a my badass drummer friend and two other local musicians to play some old-school style heavy, groovy, bluesy metal; we each had about 2 martinis (I had 4 throughout the night) and we jammed out some super tight and badass Heavy Metal

Cynical, or true?
One of the symptoms of a ****** up Society
is when the worst part about the Death of a Parent is all the ******* paperwork.

Pretentiously Moderate
I don't know,
that is to say "I can't tell"
if I was
moderately pretentious
or
pretentiously moderate;
perhaps both
but in either case,
I am aware
and thus can I begin
to better myself.

Malice
To assume Malice
is to assume Intellect;
Many who do harm
do not wage Malice.

A-cult-ism
If your Religion is so true,
why do you have to tell others
that such is the case?

Should it not be self-evident?

Maybe, then, it is just a cult
that has stood the test of Time.
I told you once
but I will say it again:
when you live for Flesh
it's the beginning of the End;

It will take you in,
it will spit you out;
Behold: the Flesh,
and the Power it holds!

Passion is a poison,
laced with Pleasure bitter-sweet.
One of many thistles
that hides deep beneath;

It will take you in,
it will spit you out;
Behold: the Flesh,
and the power it holds!

Touch!
Taste!
Breathe!
Consumed!

Deja vu, already knew
from the first encounter,
But now I know to let go
of Words; to speak no more!

Like a Wind upon your Face:
you can't see it but you know it's there.
When Beauty shows its ugly face,
just be prepared!

Passion burns,
like Fire carried by the Wind.
The End of a Time,
a Time to begin;

It will take you in,
it will spit you out;
Behold: the Flesh,
and the Power it holds!

It builds you up one way,
and tears you right back down.
A Time to begin;
the End of a Time;

It will take you in,
it will spit you out;
Behold: the Flesh,
and the power it holds!

Touch!
Taste!
Breathe!
Consumed!

Deja vu, already knew
from the first encounter;
but now I know to let go
of Words; to speak no more!

Like a Wind upon your Face;
you can't see it but you know it's there.
When Beauty shows its ugly face,
just be prepared!
I'mma be performing this song with a few friends in a week or so;
the lyrics ring true to me on many personal levels..
