I’m coming her way
But that’s about all
She, I won’t see
We’ve moved on
No regrets has she
Not the same for me
I wish we’d never met
That there was no history

I should have seen the signs
Besotted ‘ol me
She was smart and pretty
I wanted her
Lord I tried
She led me on
Then it was goodbye

So here I am
Years after
Ruminating about
This romantic disaster
Wondering if she thinks of me
Not that it matters
Her I won’t see
Just visiting her town
With my wife on my arm
As I try to forget
The heart she did harm

Lost love and might have been
Twins united in sorrow
The long yesterday
Facing tomorrow
There is no salve
Only time will wash it away
That’s what you hope
But some pain ever stays

So here we are
With our memories
She told me goodbye
I went weak in the knees
Now I’m in her city
Our love remains gone
Captured in time
As we carry on

I can’t forgive or forget
Oh, the big word is regret
And who is to blame?
Me, the master of deception
Or you, who brought the rain?
Sadness, regret, blame, time
They were all involved
And here I am
Shaking my fist at the past
How do I explain?
What could’ve been?
Will never, never will be
Yes, blame can be assigned
Maybe it’s starts with me

Yet, here I am
The other one gone
It’s ancient history
I need to move on
I have to
I will
Good ole complicated me

The house of Mimi is welcoming
She makes him feel at home
A warm fire, empathy
Cinnamon tea and scones
He’s not alone on Valentines Day
At least he’s got her
Both in the same situation
Each nursing the hurt
That comes from a romance gone south
From a dream that turned into a lie
Two broken hearts on the mend
Seeking shelter in a darkening sky
Love when it works is a fairy tale
Satisfying, a high
But it can be a gang of sadness
When it goes awry
So they commiserate
Laugh at their misfortune
Maybe hug and cry
The hue in the room is not always gloom
Sometimes it glows with a gentle light

Being divorced is not very much fun
Two kids, no dad, life on the run
A king-size bed with two pillows
But she’s sleeping alone

On a whim she headed East to the West
The Cowboy convention in Tucson
With her new boots and hat
And old friend Laura Lee, wearing a vest

This Hollywood screenwriter has seen them all
Jive city slickers with cell phones and new cars
It had been so long since she’d really been kissed
Her love life needed a punch, it could not make a fist

Samuel Dawson was born on and still lived on the ranch
He rode fence, chased cattle, is one studley man
With a soft streak as demonstrated by his craft
He works wonders with leather, why it was art

He too was lonely, this singular man
He’d cleaned himself up since his wife went and made other plans
For he had deserved it, so he sat hoping to sell
Wishing he’d find that artesian well

Stop the action, let me set the stage
There he sits at his craftsman’s booth
Underneath the canopy in the hot afternoon sun
Here comes Rebecca meandering along
She lingers and fingers his feathered and leathered strands
He smiles and she notes his mustache and tan
They talk, she will not turn away
Laura Lee shouts, “Let’s get on the way.”

This is where the story begins
One cowboy love that has no end
She’s still a writer on fine TV shows
Sam is the wrangler, whom everyone knows
Loves a lady who fancies parasols
On hot Summer days, who now rides a horse
Who no longer leads a half-finished life
Where western handicraft is everywhere in sight
And their love is on course

Some don’t understand, some don’t want to know
But bridges are built wherever you go
Even on land with no river in sight
When a cowboy finds love he succumbs without fight

The ranch is now located in Southern Cal
The fence he mends is picket, see for yourself
For I know them, and please call me Sam
She’ll be home in a few, I’m her lover man.

It’s a cowboy sunset
Red and blue the sky
As the horses settle down
Other critters come alive
It’s just the babe and I
Camping out in the great outside
I’ll be cooking dinner
First I’ll make the fire
We ride every weekend
It’s the way to get away
From the daily toil and agro
In the mountains high
Peaceful and honest
Human to the core
Add to that the moon
And a million stars galore
Trust me when I tell you
This will always be our home
On the trail to somewhere
Me and the babe alone

Cozy, I want cozy
Cozy all the time
Cozy, warm and cozy
Cozy on my mind
Blankets  are a great help
Hot chocolate and tea
A good movie on the telly
Hugs from my baby with me
Sunday mornings with the NYT
Breakfast in bed
Crispy bacon does please
Lolling about
Welcoming the sun
A warm long bath
Epsom salts are pretty fun
Yes, cozy
Cozy all the time
I live for cozy
Cozy on my mind
Everybody thought we were crazy
Maybe we were
We took off like a rocket
For places afar
Always keeping the center
Her and me
We’re crazy in love
Yeah, crazy and real

Up and away into the wild blue yonder
We sail
The wind at our backs
Our colors flying

Too many years
Too many tears
Too many nights she was alone
Waiting and wishing
Hoping and dreaming
He would come ‘round

He felt the same
But he was resolute
Where was the girl for him?
He waited and wished
Hoped and dreamed
She would come ‘round

One night it happened
A stroke of luck
They were at the valet
A casual conversation
An info exchange
Cut to the next day

A tete a tete
Then more than that
A tentative then emboldened embrace
A spark then a fire
Commitment met desire
Cut to today

No more loneliness
Just a bright light
Love heard their call
After too many years
Too many tears
They now have it all
Dad
Neville Johnson Jun 2020
Dad
I’m wearing my father’s tie and cuff links
Doing so to honor him
Who I am, what I’ve achieved
I owe to him
Oh, he was a blessing
Oh, how he is missed
By all
So many lives he enriched
Take me, for example
He taught love and kindness by example
With that joyous laugh of his
As I knot this tie it imbues me with strength and wisdom
To face the day
He had faith, and so do I
He still leads the way
That it happened so easily is the surprise
We’d been friends for a long time
The widow and me
After Lorna passed, we used to walk
Down on the esplanade on warm summer nights
Have a glass of wine
See the sights of life passing by
Wondering if that had happened to us
That life passed us by

It was the music on the bandstand
That spoke to us
And the first time we touched
I held her close as we listened
And swayed during the dusk
As she turned to me and with a smile, said
“Let's give it a try.”
We became shadows in the light of the moon
Dancing into the night
And then into forever
It just seemed right
It has since then
Everything’s all right
In fact better than that
You better believe
We danced into a dream

Let me tell you something about double agents
It’s not what you think
Oh, they look good at the beginning
Some of the information is quite valuable, even excellent
But what you don’t know is that they are false double agents
I’m talking many of them, maybe even most of them
So it is with deep skepticism and bitter experience
We look at them with a jewelers eye
But we’re wrong way too many times
It’s the Russians, the Chinese, hell anybody who has an intelligence service and isn’t part of NATO
So we trying to trap them and then we prosecute them
Or send them back
More often they take off on their own
But what can you expect in this ***** business?
It’s hide and seek for real
A new spy poem!
Neville Johnson May 2022
When I was young I dreamed of love
Who would she be?
When would she arrive?
Where would we meet?

As I grew older my hopes did smolder
But I carried on
I had many lovers
But never discovered
The one who would be the one

The years rolled by
The tears did not dry
Where oh where could she be?
Unsatisfied, I still tried to believe
She would come to me

This is a story that has no end
For now she is with me
We got together
I’m talking forever
This I know and believe

Yes, dreams and wishes come true
Before you know it tomorrows become yesterdays
And everything turns out OK

Dream vacation
Meant to be
This isn’t no dream
But reality
Fun and suds
Surf and sand
Me and the babe
Holding hands
Sun and mirth
Mai Tais and beer
Living the dream
Me and her
We disappear
Into the sunset
Into the night
So jocular
We never fight
Rather we smooch
Hold each other tight
On this dream vacation
Doin’ just right

Modern lovers
Fall asleep together
Wake up and read the paper
Nod and harrumph
Have coffee with each other
Yeah, that’s the kind of love I want
That’s the kind of love we have

This is today with many tomorrows
We’re way past yesterday
We own the world
There’s no sorrow
Let us pray
That our love lives long
Stays strong
That we’ll always find a way
To bring joy to the other
Each and every day

Neville Johnson Apr 2019
We don’t always need to be talking to enjoy each other’s company
We enjoy the little moments when they happen
When I reach for her hand, it’s always there
We have a wanderlust together
A mutual respect that is unique
Always in love we are
Every kiss is important
We send a message each time we do
It’s the date that lasts forever
And she’s all and truly mine
Neville Johnson Oct 2021
It’s emotion, my business
I sing songs
Mostly about love
My job is to move the audience
To smiles or a tear
Make people snuggle up
Hold hands, disappear
Into a state of kindness and grace
I try to bring joy to each happy face

What about me?
Well, I’m just like you
I’m a fan of many
Those who croon
Who give life meaning
Who nurture the soul
When I need to dig deep
It’s where I go

So when I hear a special song
I smile and sigh, and find in my eyes
Condensation, a misty memory
That takes me back and aback
At the feeling that comes over me
When music entertains the heart
And yet again, emotion conquers me
Neville Johnson Nov 2018
It was a moment that led into an hour
Then a day, then a month, then years,
Then a life
A life of love
From an instant to a minute
And then on
To an endless supply of mirth and merriment
And just plain contentment
As we ambled down the road
Together, together
Ever, ever
Never to sever
Locked forever
However we go
Wherever for we know
We’re not going anywhere without the other.

As a minimalist I have decided to
End this poem
Right now and
Here.
Neville Johnson Nov 2017
Just because I'm with another
That doesn't mean I don't love you anymore
This is a private display of affection
That's what songs are for

Things don't always work out the way you want
I will always treasure the time we had
We hit it off right away
We couldn't avoid the inevitable
We were on our way
So full of hope and promise
But not meant to be

Now the shade of time
Colors our sweet, fragrant memory
I can taste but not touch you
From our past I cannot flee
Hopeless and helpless
Gone from each other you and me
In a love that lasts forever
I'm the shore, you are the sea
Neville Johnson Apr 2022
Not all love is meant to endure
But ours is not entirely lost
It is embedded into a moment in time
Ever ours to cherish
Ever in my thoughts

Oh, we tried so very hard
Though we had to split apart
But that fundamental love we shared
Stays ever in our hearts

Which is why I often think of her
Those golden days of yore
She means so very much to me
Someone I still adore

In one sense we are over
But we still have a bond
She’ll always be my first true love
Apart but not gone
Neville Johnson Jun 2017
I know what’s come over me
Yes, I know it’s true
I know what’s come over me
Yes, it is you
You, who changed my life
You, my living dream
You’re really the bomb
You always make the scene
I could go on and on

Life is very simple when sliced to the core
We all just need a love
That is how success you score
There’s really nothing more
It’s love and kindness
That’s what we have
What living is for

So, dear one, we shall carry on
Dance our days away
Entwined in each other’s arms
Always shall we say
How happy we are
How lucky every day
For that is what has come over me
Ever since you came my way

You mean everything to me
Today and every day
You make me a better person
For your way is one of honesty
Built upon a foundation of love
You are just so very special
And therefore because of this
I declare today that you can do whatever you wish
As well as tomorrow
And the day after that
Indeed forever
You're the wife, friend and lover par excellence
So this is my gift to you:
I shall endeavor to be better in each and every way
My goal is to make you happy
To share these golden days
To make each day a special one for you
As if it is your birthday
My dear wife gets this today.

Here’s the deal
Here’s the truth
Ladies, listen up
Take some advice from this guy
Be prepared, take a chance
Most of us are awful shy

We’re scared of rejection
Maybe just in awe
Can’t believe you’d go for us
I’m laying down the law
From now on it’s Sadie Hawkins Day
Ask that man to dance
Or for a cup of coffee
Because perchance
You might find Mr. Right
To make up for all those Mr. Wrongs
It’s easy, all you do is try
They’ll fall into your arms

So every day, if you meet someone
Who could float your boat
Give him the opportunity
Let him know there’s hope
That he could maybe fall in love
At least have a good time
Practice ‘til you get it right
You’ll be surprised how easy it is
Try with all your might
It will work out fine
Neville Johnson Nov 2016
Hey, old friend, how've you been?
Can you believe the news?
Politics is amazing
How we choose our leaders
Sorting through the rhetoric and slime
You just shake your head in amazement and derision
Then head off to bed
Everything will be fine

We think we've seen it all before
But no, not like this
But, what the hell, we will weather this storm
Smile and shake a fist
Let's all work together
Make this a better day
Have this common goal
For come what may
We'll always be friends
Commiserate

Like now, as life goes on
As together we race through time
We can still smile, not lose our resolve
Everything is gonna be fine

Extreme Poetry
Fights, fumes, resists, entices, twists, endures, seduces
Rhymes at times
Or so rarely you want it to explode, implode
Or just mellow out
But you don't stop reading
Unless it bores
Or you're just too tired
Ditties and sonnets
And ABAB and the like are all very well
But real men and women go for
The rough and tumble of truly free verse
Where words are the masonry
Spitting at you in spurts
Confounding, astounding
Welcome to consternation nation
Where assonance bucks up against alliteration
And the inevitable invasion of syllables and vowels
A perverse form of Password that traipses over diction when it wants
Because there are no rules in Extreme Poetry
Having fun with poetry!

Jim never got over Sue
Nor she him
The big mistake occurred so long ago
But that’s the way it is
Lovers with an abiding spirit
They still share today
But they can’t be together
Such a shame, no way
I’ll avoid the specifics
But fate and circumstance play the leads
Conspiring to prevent their consummation
Only memories now struggle to meet their needs
They can only do so much
They’re no salve
There is no solution
Not for this love
Neville Johnson Nov 2017
Tender, oh so tender
How you are to me
Tender, so tender
So good, so dear, so sweet

Happy we go lucky
Solid, how we stay
Together and forever
Through dark and sunny days

These are times of peace and glory
Thankfulness and praise
Of understanding
Forgiveness and grace
And through it all are you and me
Two for the road of life
Feathers in a breeze
Neville Johnson Nov 2021
I just gotta know you, baby
You will like me
Here are 15 reasons
First, I live and breathe for you
Next, I'm fun to date
If you like to laugh,
Just hang with me
I got a real job, I'm an MD, I'll bring that bacon home
And yes I saw you win on Jeopardy
Go ahead and quiz me
I can cook a meal so tasty
You'll demand them regularly
Oh, and I can kiss real good,
Go ahead, try me
I'm very considerate, dress elegantly
Of course, am trustworthy
Have my pilot's license
Am toned, touch my arm, now squeeze
People say I'm handsome
I'm kind to the elderly
But most of all I love you
That I already know
Give me a chance, my dear
Give me the say so

(Based on a true story)
Neville Johnson Jul 2021
Today is our 15th Anniversary! Lucky guy I am.

This is for you
What must be said
Simply and often
From my heart and head
You changed my life
You give me a thrill
Each time we kiss
Say you will
Be mine forever
Be kind to me
Forgive my failings
I want to be
Your best man
Every day
Give me your heart
In love all the way

I need you
I love you
Always
Be mine
We’ve made it this far
We’ll go to the finish line
Love me, don’t leave me
Forgive me my sins
I’m trying, really trying
I’ve so much love within
I can show you
Give me a kiss
Now wasn’t that nice?
Complete bliss?
Neville Johnson Jan 2017
I used to be an integer
Now I'm a fraction of what I used to be
My problems multiplied exponentially
To sum it up, I'm looking for value
A good addition, someone to love me
Who won't divide us from the other
It's my theory of relativity
So let's have a slice of pi
A walk down lover’s lane
We'd be perfect numbers
Without need to explain
Why we fit together
Oh so equally
The perfect equation
I hope you're into me
Neville Johnson Aug 2021
This existential love affair lived on its own terms
What were we waiting for?
Our Godot did not show
Life, death, politics
Then there was us
Mordant philosophers we were
Bathing in ennui
The *** was good
Almost always is
The conversation in cafes our currency
Who had the best bon mot?
So savory
Everything mattered
And nothing at all
We fought for our love because we thought we should
It died of its own accord
It moved on
Orbits still a satellite in my thoughts
Searching for its heart
Neville Johnson Jun 2019
For crying out loud
What do I get?
No satisfaction
For being bereft
I yell at the wall
It just stares back at me
I want her back
That ain’t gonna be

No one can see
Me weep all alone
I keep to myself
And the great unknown
But I know that I loved her
She was the one
Unfortunately it’s sunset
And she is the sun

For crying out loud
All I can do
Love is so ruthless
Aren’t we all fools?
For crying out loud
That’s the least I can do
Neville Johnson Jul 2018
I’ve had a good life without you
But I’m still in a daze
Whenever I see you
And remember those days
When we were together
So amazed at the power of love
How it changed us both for the better
It was a long time ago
I’ve always loved you
I know you know
Every day since
And I’m not kidding about this
I’ve thought about you
I reminisce
That I miss your sweet voice
One so sincere
Our love was real
It won’t disappear
You’re happy, I know
A great family
I am too
The way it should be
It’s been so great to visit
You mean so much to me
Neville Johnson Dec 2020
Love comes in all sorts of shapes, forms and sizes
It’s beautiful in everyone
Mysterious and wonderful
Cool and sublime
No more at the corner of sad and lonely
No, we’re gonna be just fine
It’s you and me and the wild blue yonder
It’s barge cruising down the Nile
It’s bicycling in the South of France
There’s no denial
We’re on to something and we won’t let go
I’m your man
And you, you’re everything
My woman
My woman for sure
Neville Johnson Jul 2022
She does life on her terms
She figured it out
So independent
Moving about
Seeing the world
Friends everywhere
She’s got it together
Though no lover to share
She doesn’t worry
She does fine alone
It will all work out
As she does roam
Neville Johnson Jan 2019
I don’t believe in free love
But I know that love can set you free
Sometimes a delicate balance
Sometimes misery
But through it all is the constant
The faith that keeps the glow
It’s love that keeps me going
That I surely know
Neville Johnson Dec 2019
We were both lonely
Each in love with someone else
In relationships that couldn’t come together
Notwithstanding what we felt
So we spent a lot of time with each other
Friends, just friends
That’s all we’d ever be
Friends, solid friends
Each of us in misery
We hung out at parties
Tried not to frown
People thought we were with each other
Word got around
But no one knew
Just us two
And the ones we could not have
Both of us went nearly mad
Eventually my friend and her love
Found a path that worked out right
Me, I found another
We’re living a great life
And I’m still close with my dear friend
Who kept me safe and sane
Until I found my only one
And a happy end, with no blame
Neville Johnson Feb 2022
Her story is his story
Fusion comes to mind
Two lives lived for the other
Love combined
They fit, two aces
Working at it day by day
Aligned together
Above the daily fray
Nothing they cannot surmount
They've got hopes and dreams
And realistic expectations
It is what it seems
Good times filled with purpose
Worthwhile how their time is spent
Natural and easy, magnificent
His story is her story
Real and filled with heaven's scent
One nods the head in appreciation
That what they have is meant to inspire
To make brighter each day
And to encourage the rest of us
So that we each can say
My story is her story
Her story is mine
Love is what we share in it
And how we are defined.

Streets are empty
But we will be back on our feet sooner than someday
It’s not gonna stay that way
We’re all gobsmacked, aren’t we?
Everybody says, or hopes, we’re going to be OK
OK, we will but hey
It don’t look easy right now
Soldier on, they say
I’m calling old friends
I think it’s time
The streets may be empty
But the city is still filled with love
We’re all coming together
At least it seems that way
We’re in this together
The whole world
Amazing in a way
Let’s make the best of it
We’ll get through this
Tomorrow is another day
Neville Johnson Apr 2018
Fundamental, sentimental
That’s you and me
Falling in, being in love
Is the degree with which we’ve graduated
What we have and believe
A unified spirit are we
A force of nature that breathes
With excitement and gratitude
A great story it is
Full of hope and dreams
A by-gosh and by-golly cornucopia
Of amazing memories and scenes
Like the time we kissed on a mountaintop
That week in Paris
Traipsing through Iceland
All starring you and me
We just keep going
Cannot get enough
So very tasty, delectable
Just constant good stuff
More, please
Our time I shall ever remember
So good it was
Lost in each other’s hearts
We were so young
With dreams and wishes
To carry us as we rolled along
Those were days of wonder and awe
We sure had our fun
Those golden memories
Of precious days gone
Our living history
Somehow we go on
Neville Johnson Sep 2018
This is golden time
Becoming twilight
A kiss to last forever
A kiss to start the night
Continuity
Locked hearts
Constantly amusing
Everything is perfect
Everything is all right
Our love is a constant star
Our love has the might
To last forever
Indeed it will

Golden time
All the time
As good as it can be
Life is good
Yes it is
The good life of you and me

I never told her how much I loved her and now she’s gone
Worldly, loving, energetic, curious
Tall with brown eyes
Eclectic, traveled
A good listener
Loved song snippets
And palindromes
And long treks in the hills
But I lost her
I loved her
And now she’s gone
Neville Johnson Jan 2020
Another year gone by
I get weepy
For the memories we shared
Weren’t we so alive?
I reminisce about the good times
I know there are more to come
But I can’t help but miss those moments
We sure had fun
I lost some friends to the Great Sleep
They’re in my heart today
I’m still trucking along
Fortunate to say
I’ve got it good
Look forward to each day
Still, I get weepy
Time just slips away
Leaving only memories
Goodbye with a wave
Neville Johnson Jul 2021
It’s a good morning
Good morning to you
Good morning to life
Good morning to all
A bright day ahead
Soon I’ll surprise
My lover and let her discover
That if we try
We’ll build her a future
A beautiful sigh
For today is the day
I’ll ask for her hand
Today is the day
When she’ll understand
How much I love her
That I always will
Today is the day
Today is a thrill

She’s awakening now
Those big bright eyes
Greet me with a smile
It’s a natural high
Hanging together
Hanging forever
Hanging today
For the rest of our lives
