when I was a kid,
I used to color,

I used to color the whole page,
inside,
and outside of the lines,
like how out of the box I was,
you couldn't contain all of me in a box,
even if you had boxes,
I'd escape,
and break free,

When I was a kid,
I colored inside,
and outside of the lines,

while in school they told me how I was out of line,
I was far from out of line,
I always made sure I was inside the lines,
but sometimes,
sometimes its as if my imagination got the best of me,
and I got to escape there conforment,
even if it was for a second it felt so great,
as if I was in prison and I got to go outside for the first time in years,
my adventures in my head couldn't break through to the real world,
like reality came in and arrested my imagination,

when I was a kid,
I stopped coloring outside of the lines,
and only colored inside,

To feel like a square peg going into a round hole,
as they tried to shaped me into what the saw to be as standard,
shaving down my unique edges,
like it was a crime to be so different,
as if I saw them try to expand to fit my square ways of thinking,
not once had they thought it could work out better,
then lining the squares and triangles and hexagons and countless others up,
to get sanded down to be as close as they could make them to be to a circle,

I'm not a kid anymore,
I'm much older now,

I still color inside the lines,
to make my beautiful pictures,
and sometimes,
like when I was a child,
I color outside the lines,

*because sometimes no one has to know,
when you've made a masterpiece,
a poem about coloring

Why
Why are thing the way they are
Why do you wish upon a star
Where do you find sweet peace of mind
And why are people so often unkind
Why do I seek what I cannot find
Why do I wish for some other time
Why do I ask why must this be
Why would you dare refuse to see
The reason the why's and why they are
Is because its right here and not too far
If you look at what you have and ask not why
your why's will decreas ...Give it a try
Now for those who may not care
I will leave you with a dare
I dare you to think, next time you ask why
And maybe just maybe....you'll look toward the sky
For maybe your answers to all of your whys
Are far far beyond the clouds in the sky

all we have is our coats on,
yours with the colour of fresh snow—
neat and untainted; 'white' as they say
and mine completely present of
spilled paint and creases out of cloth;
hues of hope and folded dreams—
trying to reach that lab coat of yours
that's never messy as mine

There is a corner of my mind
That I am frightened to visit
There is a child who sits there
Alone

It is me
Alone
A child
In a corner

A child afraid
In a corner
I want to help myself
But I don’t know how

There is a corner of my mind
That I do not explore
Because I lack courage

I read about hope
Hope and boundless courage
These are the companions
I would like to befriend

Hope
Boundless courage
Courage that knows no bounds

I have been rejected
Time and again
And I become the child
In the corner of my mind

Lost
Frightened
Alone

With courage
With hope
Perhaps I can help the child to stand
Perhaps the adult can carry the child
To safety

Hope
Like a warm glow
Courage
Like a great gust of wind

My stomach feels tight
My chest full of aching discomfort
Wearily
Bleary  eyed
I travel into the predictability of a narrowing future

In spite of everything
I try to help the child to stand

'Don’t worry' I whisper
'I am here for you
I am here to help you stand
I would never scold you
I will only show you kindness'

This map shapes around streets,
cities, and boulevards
Tiny crevices, corners, and
unknown places I have yet to explore
Curves that sharpen themselves
just to mellow out

I can trace each line to find where
I am wanted

This map has ribs
has eyes
has bones
has spine

This map I explore with childish
vigor

This map has been used and torn
but beauty prints itself upon
parched paper

The eyes hold boulevards of love
The knots of spine hold cities
around the thin ligaments
The bones hold streets in every marrow
despite being worn down and rugged

This map I tell:
“I love you.”
When tragedy strikes in stale hours
of night

This map I hold
When happiness is just too far too grasp

I can read this map while others
squint eyes to see it’s perfect but faded
structure

Yet, I’ve never grown old of the minuscule
rips and faded print of her.

I don't expect you to understand
Why I recoil when
You extend your arms and hands
Why I brace for impact
Within the trajectory of your touch
It is warm,
and I am cold.
It is wind,
and I am stone.

Still learning to reach for the gifts
star like in the skies
Taking them into my heart

One at a time

One for your love
The children too

One for the mind
One for the feelings
Through and through

One for the light evolving
One for the light of healing

One at a time

One for the heat of living

Still learning to reach for the gifts
Star like in the skies.
