Gray skin creeps in slowly
through the open door
Hold your breath, tread carefully
Who are you looking for?

Tell you what you want to hear
Leave the truth behind
Tell you what you need to hear
Words come with a price

Stare at you straight through stained glass
Smiles fade away...

Woof
piper m Jan 2019
If I had four paws
I would feel no obligation but
to please you

I would sit by your side,
and stare straight into your mind

Innocence leaking from my eyes

You would pat my head
gently
tenderly
as if to say
I love you too
a little cheesy, a little confusing, don't ask me why the title is woof, it just is

I saw you glide around the basketball court today like the floor was made of freshly polished glass.
You didn't falter once.
You slid as easily as ball bearings across an endless marble table.
Circling & spinning & swaying & twirling.
Your dress was polka dot.
It whipped sharply in the wind.
I watched you skate until you rolled away, onto a gravel path.
Although your absence was as silent as the drifting of your blades,
As the sky went dark, I really wished you would have stayed.
For the most beautiful girl in the world, wherever you are.

Life and death,
Are tightly bound,
Like a flashbulb going off.

Black rain fell,
Clashing with
Smoke and fire.

"You cannot escape,"
She told me.

"Even here,
Only a few people
Are not broken."
are you
broken, too?

My baby
I don't want your leftover time.
Although I am sad that you are no longer mine,
You don't know what you want, babe
And I think that's alright.
But I know that I'm worth more than your leftover time.

Foaming, drifting, waiting

Roaming, shifting, hating.

Salt burns my skin, my eyes, my lips.

The wind is blowing, soon my flag rips.

The storm does not end, instead, brings more thunder.

I was not strong enough, so I just went under.

My boy’s afraid
Of losing the keys
To his brand new
Bright blue Audi
TT Roadster.
From my arms,
He drove right home
Knocked twice,
Three times
When she opened
That door.
“Maria,” her name
Slipped softly
Hanging from his
Icy lips.
She caught it
Quickly
In a little crimson
Kiss.
“Alfonso,”
Her breath
Catching,
With an effective
Little hitch.

The leaves are still green
Where are you headed?
I see her, sleeping in the backseat
Pass the sugar cane before she spots the weeds
I feel water rushing
Running down my sleeves
Numinous, she dances, terrifying me
Ears closed to the music
Snow makes it hard to breathe
Tires ink the road again
Drive away from me

Now, why would I do that?

"You know why."
Do I?

"You're lovely."
You're lovelier.

"That's why you should."
Maybe I will.

"How would you feel?"
Honestly?

"Yes, honestly."

I don't know.

Which is somewhere in your mind

Leaves me with sorrow in my blood
Open doors leave me tightly spun
Six legs across the window pane
Legs so pale they make my mother look bright
Even she glows in the night like a puddle under lamplight

A sonnet without a title
piper m Feb 2021
The confines of fourteen lines hold me down
The sovereign of the sonnet has trapped me
Now, what is there left to do but steal his evil crown?
Had I not convinced myself that this task would be
So simple, I might be wearing it by
Now. However, that is not the case at all.
Brutish thoughts assail as I contemplate on why
Shakespeare had the audacity to enthrall
The whole of England with his cruel, cruel mind.
I mean to say, his poetry is
Rather soft, and his words are rather kind
But the source of my frustration is all his
Doing. I’ve done it now though, haven’t I?
A sonnet completed in the span of one night.

You Know Me
piper m Jan 2019
You know me
Challenging
I am the diatribe
The one you so despise
You call it complaining
A futile act in your eyes
I contain a heart of gold
Yet, you fail to look past the mold
Because
You are the cowardice

Afraid
Of what?
I have to ask
Afraid of what
Afraid
Of your son
For being gay?

Afraid
You ask, "Who made you this way?"
Blame it on the diatribe
The one who "complains"
Knock her down
You know what she'll say?

Listen to your son, man
Look into his eyes
He is just the same as you
Weary of disguise
Afraid of the stranger he feels he must become
Searching for acceptance
Realizing, there may be none

He has enough "friends"
That pat him on the back
Pretending they don't see

Because he's still not ready
To let his heart be free

This is your job
To comfort and accept
Not to question
Not to ruin
Or for you to deflect

Who made him this way?
You, not me

Here we are
Tension not dissolved
Diatribe and cowardice
The question still unsolved

The subject of our debate remains

Afraid to live
Afraid to love
Afraid to be himself because
You are the cowardice

Afraid of what?
Afraid of your son for being gay
Afraid, he asks
"Who made me this way?"
hang in there

The pain was excruciating.
I scratched and cried until,
All the romance
Suddenly
Vanished from my mind.

The tears fell in torrents
Down my cracked and bleeding cheeks.
I suffered.
And not, I regret, always in silence.

Sunset Shots
piper m Apr 2021
If you’re on the water,
take a picture
so I can remember the way you see the world.
Wish you’d strung an ‘A’ on the chain
around my neck
so I could take you everywhere I go.
Please pull me up,
you know sometimes I get
low.
Should never have left you alone.

Miss the days we forgot we were just friends.
I hold the silence steady on the phone.
You take your time breaking it with
“I hate you.”
But I know,
it’s never been true.
I write better under pressure,
only when my words are about you.
Since last October, you’ve been my only muse.

You caught every sunset in your palm
to show me.
Saved fading rays in your pocket.
Just in case I hadn't seen.
So I did my part and
kept all your smiles in my pocket,
just in case
you forgot about me.
I see you in the gaps between the clouds

Her Name is an Emotion
piper m Jun 2020
Her shy imagination is a blessing.
Her heart is rather plump with never ending hope.
She says she'll always see the best in me.
I wonder if that's supposed to be a joke.
My words should leave my poisoned mouth, and sting her swelling heart.
Instead they bang my lips with hammers, yearning for them to part.
Her name wraps softly 'round my agitated thoughts.
When she pulls them down my throat again, they turn into sharp and jagged rocks.
Her method is so simple to
keep my rage at bay.
She always says she'll never leave my mind. She'll be packing any day.

Heart too Large
piper m Nov 2020
Sometimes you have to be alone,
And sometimes you think you're going to cry,
And you do.
The tears will stain your cheeks down to your ears,
And you'll think back on when I would kiss your eyelids while it rained.
You've been growing under harsh light,
And your heart has rusted over, along with all your ferns.
Don't you know I still wait for you to call me after the shower to tell me that dogs chased you all the way home,
And when I grow up I'll tell myself that in time,
You must have grown towards the sun.
Your heart is too large,
And your brain is too big.
Please don't let them get you down.

As he walks
Across an empty room
Towards me
He smells like rain
In the middle of summer
And I do not feel anything for him at all
He says that
Poets are quiet people
But
I don't believe him
I am no longer a poet
Only a thief
For I am louder than he has ever been
And he knows
He is a poet
Who will not say a word

After reading somewhere that emotional tears fall slower than reactionary ones

Every time I cry over you I count how many seconds it takes a tear to fall down my cheek

I wonder if I still miss you

Or if I'm crying because it feels like the right thing to do

Random Ramblings
piper m Jul 2020
When did the music stop?
I don't know.
Last time my ears were open, we were listening to the Smith's.
"I've got no right to take my place with the human race," Steven told me.
And I listened.
I opened a bag of dried apricots that I'd found next to the record player.
They expired in 2015.
I ate them anyway.
Just random ramblings.

The short life of
Honey orchid oolong tea;
put to rest,
hot, on his tongue.
Boiling water and
bitter leaves
the color of his smiling eyes.
He’s drunk on red
and stuck between:
climbing Big Snow Mountain or,
a perfect day with
Her
beneath the sweet osmanthus tree.
