At the time of my nadir penniless in Le Havre in the drizzle
Saw a blue neon light of a bar I meet sailors there from my own country
They gave me cigarettes and wine, money enough to take the train home
Only among the poor do you find selfless generosity
I had a pencil, and a note block tried to collect my thought to find out what
I was thinking found out I was more educated than I expected, that is
What reading a thousand books do to you, alas I also knew my limitation
My difficulty in functioning in the world we live in.

I bought a typewriter but had no grammar what saved me from go under
Was a heart attack the authorities gave me a small pension enough
To live on and the time to learn and I have written what I wanted to say
In the process lost some friends and gained some others, but most of all
I have tried not becoming satisfied when so much I see is rotten because
When you get old, it is easy to fall into the trap of selfishness.

Uyghur Poetry Translations

With my translations I am trying to build awareness of the plight of Uyghur poets and their people, who are being sent in large numbers to Chinese "reeducation" concentration camps.

Perhat Tursun (1969-????) is one of the foremost living Uyghur language poets, if he is still alive. Unfortunately, Tursun was "disappeared" into a Chinese "reeducation" concentration camp where extreme psychological torture is the norm. According to a disturbing report he was later "hospitalized." Apparently no one knows his present whereabouts or condition, if he has one. According to John Bolton, when Donald Trump learned of these "reeducation" concentration camps, he told Chinese President Xi Jinping it was "exactly the right thing to do." Trump’s excuse? "Well, we were in the middle of a major trade deal."

Elegy

Three centuries later they resurrect, not recognizing each other,
Their former greatness forgotten.
I happily ingested poison, like a fine wine.
When they search the streets and cannot locate our corpses, do you know that I am with you?

In that tower constructed of skulls you will find my dome as well:
They removed my head to more accurately test their swords' temper.
When before their swords our relationship flees like a flighty lover,

When men in fur hats are used for target practice in the marketplace

TRANSLATOR NOTES: This is my interpretation (not necessarily correct) of the poem's frozen corpses left 300 years in the past. For the Uyghur people the Mongol period ended around 1760 when the Qing dynasty invaded their homeland, then called Dzungaria. Around a million people were slaughtered during the Qing takeover, and the Dzungaria territory was renamed Xinjiang. I imagine many Uyghurs fleeing the slaughters would have attempted to navigate treacherous mountain passes. Many of them may have died from starvation and/or exposure, while others may have been caught and murdered by their pursuers. The Fog and the Shadows

“I began to realize the fog was similar to the shadows.”

I began to realize that, just as the exact shape of darkness is a shadow,
even so the exact shape of fog is disappearance
and the exact shape of a human being is also disappearance.
At this moment it seemed my body was vanishing into the human form’s final state.

After I arrived here,
it was as if the danger of getting lost
and the desire to lose myself
were merging strangely inside me.

While everything in that distant, gargantuan city where I spent my five college years felt strange to me; and even though the skyscrapers, highways, ditches and canals were built according to a single standard and shape, so that it wasn’t easy to differentiate them, still I never had the feeling of being lost. Everyone there felt like one person and they were all folded into each other. It was as if their faces, voices and figures had been gathered together like a shaman’s jumbled-up hair.

Even the men and women seemed identical.
You could only tell them apart by stripping off their clothes and examining them.
The men’s faces were beardless like women’s and their skin was very delicate and unadorned.
I was always surprised that they could tell each other apart.
Later I realized it wasn’t just me: many others were also confused.

For instance, when we went to watch the campus’s only TV in a corridor of a building where the seniors stayed when they came to improve their knowledge. Those elderly Uyghurs always argued about whether someone who had done something unusual in an earlier episode was the same person they were seeing now. They would argue from the beginning of the show to the end. Other people, who couldn’t stand such endless nonsense, would leave the TV to us and stalk off.

Then, when the classes began, we couldn’t tell the teachers apart.
Gradually we became able to tell the men from the women
and eventually we able to recognize individuals.
But other people remained identical for us.

The most surprising thing for me was that the natives couldn’t differentiate us either.
For instance, two police came looking for someone who had broken windows during a fight at a restaurant and had then run away.
They ordered us line up, then asked the restaurant owner to identify the culprit.
He couldn’t tell us apart even though he inspected us very carefully.
He said we all looked so much alike that it was impossible to tell us apart.
Sighing heavily, he left.



The Encounter

Refuge of a Refugee

The following excerpts, translated by Anne Henochowicz, come from an essay written by Tang Danhong about her final meeting with Dr. Ablet Abdurishit Berqi, aka Tarim. Tarim is a reference to the Tarim Basin and its Uyghur inhabitants...

I’m convinced that the poet Tarim Ablet Berqi the associate professor at the Xinjiang Education Institute, has been sent to a “concentration camp for educational transformation.” This scholar of Uyghur literature who conducted postdoctoral research at Israel’s top university, what kind of “educational transformation” is he being put through?

Chen Quanguo, the Communist Party secretary of Xinjiang, has said it’s “like the instruction at school, the order of the military, and the security of prison. We have to break their blood relations, their networks, and their roots.”

On a scorching summer day, Tarim came to Tel Aviv from Haifa. In a few days he would go back to Urumqi. I invited him to come say goodbye and once again prepared Sichuan cold noodles for him. He had already unfriended me on Facebook. He said he couldn’t eat, he was busy, and had to hurry back to Haifa. He didn’t even stay for twenty minutes. I can’t even remember, did he sit down? Did he have a glass of water? Yet this farewell shook me to my bones.

He said, “Maybe when I get off the plane, before I enter the airport, they’ll take me to a separate room and beat me up, and I’ll disappear.”

Looking at my shocked face, he then said, “And maybe nothing will happen …”

His expression was sincere. To be honest, the Tarim I saw rarely smiled. Still, layer upon layer blocked my powers of comprehension: he’s a poet, a writer, and a scholar. He’s an associate professor at the Xinjiang Education Institute. He can get a passport and come to Israel for advanced studies. When he goes back he’ll have an offer from Sichuan University to be a professor of literature … I asked, “Beat you up at the airport? Disappear? On what grounds?”

“That’s how Xinjiang is,” he said without any surprise in his voice. “When a Uyghur comes back from being abroad, that can happen.”…

Iz (“Traces”)

We left the tracks, the station... the crowds recede in the distance;

W. S. Rendra translations

Willibrordus Surendra Broto Rendra (1935-2009), better known as W. S. Rendra or simply Rendra, was an Indonesian dramatist and poet. He said, “I learned meditation and the disciplines of the traditional Javanese poet from my mother, who was a palace dancer. In the poem above, note how "wood" and "tree" invoke the cross while "sun" and "son" seem to invoke each other. Sun-day is also Son-day, to Christians. The anonymous poet who wrote the poem above may have been been punning the words "sun" and "son." The poem is also known as "Now Goeth Sun Under Wood" and "Now Go'th Sun Under Wood."

Sounds like an early animal rights activist! The use of "and" is intriguing... is the poet saying that his walks in the wood drive him mad because he is also a "beast of bone and blood, " facing a similar fate?

This is a balbale-song of Inanna.

This may be earth's oldest love poem. It may have been written around 2000 BC, long before the Bible's "Song of Solomon, " which had been considered to be the oldest extant love poem by some experts. Shu-Sin was a Mesopotamian king who ruled over the land of Sumer close to four thousand years ago. The poem seems to be part of a rite, probably performed each year, known as the "sacred marriage" or "divine marriage, " in which the king would symbolically marry the goddess Inanna, mate with her, and so ensure fertility and prosperity for the coming year. The king would accomplish this amazing feat by marrying and/or having *** with a priestess or votary of Inanna, the Sumerian goddess of love, fertility and war. Her Akkadian name was Istar/Ishtar, and she was also known as Astarte.



War is Obsolete

Elegy for a little girl, lost

I was touched by this Latin prayer, which I discovered in a novel I read as a teenager. I later decided to incorporate it into a poem. From what I now understand, “ad deum qui laetificat juventutem meam” means “to the God who gives joy to my youth,” but I am sticking with my original interpretation: a lament for a little girl at her funeral. The phrase can be traced back to Saint Jerome's translation of Psalm 42 in the Vulgate Latin Bible (circa 385 AD).

Walid Khazindar was born in 1950 in Gaza City. He is considered one of the best Palestinian poets; his poetry has been said to be "characterized by metaphoric originality and a novel thematic approach unprecedented in Arabic poetry." He was awarded the first Palestine Prize for Poetry in 1997.

Hamza

Hamza was one of my hometown’s ordinary men
who did manual labor for bread.

When I saw him recently,
the land still wore its mourning dress in the solemn windless silence
and I felt defeated.

But Hamza-the-unextraordinary said:
“Sister, our land’s throbbing heart never ceases to pound,
and it perseveres, enduring the unendurable, keeping the secrets of mounds and wombs.
This land sprouting cactus spikes and palms also births freedom-fighters.
Thus our land, my sister, is our mother!”

Days passed and Hamza was nowhere to be seen,
but I felt the land’s belly heaving in pain.
At sixty-five Hamza’s a heavy burden on her back.

“Burn down his house!”
some commandant screamed,

As our town’s military ruler later explained
this was necessary for law and order,
that is, an act of love, for peace!

Armed soldiers surrounded Hamza’s house;
the coiled serpent completed its circle.

The bang at his door came with an ultimatum:
“Evacuate, **** it!'
So generous with their time, they said:
“You can have an hour, yes!”

Hamza threw open a window.
Face-to-face with the blazing sun, he yelled defiantly:
“Here in this house I and my children will live and die, for Palestine!”
Hamza's voice echoed over the hemorrhaging silence.

An hour later, with impeccable timing, Hanza’s house came crashing down
as its rooms were blown sky-high and its bricks and mortar burst,
till everything settled, burying a lifetime’s memories of labor, tears, and happier times.

Yesterday I saw Hamza
walking down one of our town’s streets ...
Hamza-the-unextraordinary man who remained as he always was:
unshakable in his determination.

My translation follows one by Azfar Hussain and borrows a word here, a phrase there.

we imagine a presence
full of the fury of lost innocence.

What we find within strange whorls of drifting flame,
brief patterns mauling winds deform and maim,
we recognize at once, but cannot name.

Winter Thoughts of Ann Rutledge

Ann Rutledge was apparently Abraham Lincoln’s first love interest. Unfortunately, she was engaged to another man when they met, then died with typhoid fever at age 22. According to a friend, Isaac Cogdal, when asked if he had loved her, Lincoln replied: “It is true―true indeed, I did. I loved the woman dearly and soundly: She was a handsome girl―would have made a good, loving wife … I did honestly and truly love the girl and think often, often of her now.”

Ann Rutledge’s Irregular Quilt

I.
Her fingers “plied the needle” with “unusual swiftness and art”
till Abe knelt down beside her: then her demoralized heart
set Eros’s dart a-quiver; thus a crazy quilt emerged:
strange stitches all a-kilter, all patterns lost. (Her host
kept her vicarious laughter barely submerged.)

II.
Years later she’d show off the quilt with its uncertain stitches
as evidence love undermines men’s plans and unevens women’s strictures
(and a plethora of scriptures.)

III.
But O the sacred tenderness Ann’s reckless stitch contains
and all the world’s felicities: rich cloth, for love’s fine gains,
for sweethearts’ tremulous fingers and their bright, uncertain vows
and all love’s blithe, erratic hopes (like now’s).

IV.
Years later on a pilgrimage, by tenderness obsessed,
Dale Carnegie, drawn to her grave, found weeds in her place of rest
and mowed them back, revealing the spot of Lincoln’s joy and grief
(and his hope and his disbelief).

V.
Yes, such is the tenderness of love, and such are its disappointments.
Love is a book of rhapsodic poems. Love is an grab bag of ointments.
Love is the finger poised, the smile, the Question ― perhaps ― and the Answer?

Love is the pain of betrayal, the two left feet of the dancer.

VI.
There were ladies of ill repute in his past. Or so he thought. Was it true?
And yet he loved them, Ann (sweet Ann!), as tenderly as he loved you.

For All That I Remembered

For all that I remembered, I forgot
her name, her face, the reason that we loved ...
and yet I hold her close within my thought.
I feel the burnished weight of auburn hair
that fell across her face, the apricot
clean scent of her shampoo, the way she glowed
so palely in the moonlight, angel-wan.

The memory of her gathers like a flood
and bears me to that night, that only night,
when she and I were one, and if I could ...
I'd reach to her this time and, smiling, brush
the hair out of her eyes, and hold intact
each feature, each impression. Love is such
a threadbare sort of magic, it is gone
before we recognize it. I would crush
my lips to hers to hold their memory,
if not more tightly, less elusively.

In Praise of Meter

the octave of the crystal can produce
a trillion oscillations, yet not lose
a second's beat. The ear needs no device
to hear the unsprung rhythms of the couch
drown out the mouth's; the lips can be debauched
by kisses, should the heart put back its watch
and find the pulse of love, and sing, devout.
If moons and tides in interlocking dance
obey their numbers, what's been left to chance?
Should poets be more lax―their circumstance
as humble as it is?―or readers wince
to see their ragged numbers thin, to hear
the moans of drones drown out the Chanticleer?

When she was a child
in a dark forest of fear,
imagination cast its strange light
into secret places,
scattering traces
of illumination so bright,
years later, she could still find them there,
their light undefiled.

When she was young,
the shafted light of her dreams
shone on her uplifted face
as she prayed ...
though she strayed
into a night fallen like woven lace
shrouding the forest of screams,
her faith led her home.

Now she is old
and the light that was flame
is a slow-dying ember ...
what she felt then
she would explain;
she would if she could only remember
that forest of shame,
faith beaten like gold.

This was an unusual poem, and it took me some time to figure out who the old woman was. She was a victim of childhood ******, hence the title I eventually came up with.



Lullaby

to the embankment, like Lot's wife transformed to salt, forever.

Despair has arranged my fate

will hoot above the sleepers

from which sometimes a docile animal emerges
slowly lowering its heavy lids.
A black dew drips from your temples:

the lost gold of vanished stars.

TRANSLATOR'S NOTE: I believe that in the second stanza the blood on Elis's forehead may be a reference to the apprehensive ****** sweat of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane. If my interpretation is correct, Elis hears the blackbird's cries, anticipates the danger represented by a harbinger of death, but elects to continue rather than turn back. From what I have been able to gather, the color blue had a special significance for Georg Trakl: it symbolized longing and perhaps a longing for death. The colors blue, purple and black may represent a progression toward death in the poem.



Hearthside

For all that we professed of love, we knew
this night would come, that we would bend alone
to tend wan fires’ dimming bars―the moan
of wind cruel as the Trumpet, gelid dew
an eerie presence on encrusted logs
we hoard like jewels, embrittled so ourselves.

The books that line these close, familiar shelves
loom down like dreary chaperones. Wild dogs,
too old for mates, cringe furtive in the park,
as, toothless now, I frame this parchment kiss.

I do not know the words for easy bliss
and so my shriveled fingers clutch this stark,
long-unenamored pen and will it: Move.
I loved you more than words, so let words prove.

This sonnet is written from the perspective of the great Irish poet William Butler Yeats in his loose translation or interpretation of the Pierre de Ronsard sonnet “When You Are Old.” The aging Yeats thinks of his Muse and the love of his life, the fiery Irish revolutionary Maude Gonne. As he seeks to warm himself by a fire conjured from ice-encrusted logs, he imagines her doing the same. Although Yeats had insisted that he wasn’t happy without Gonne, she said otherwise: “Oh yes, you are, because you make beautiful poetry out of what you call your unhappiness and are happy in that. Marriage would be such a dull affair. Poets should never marry. The world should thank me for not marrying you!”

To Have Loved

I sat beside the glowing grate, fresh heaped

Detective stories have been making a splash on European screens for the past decade. Some attract top-notch directors, actors and script writers. They are far superior to anything that appears over here -- whether on TV or from Hollywood. Part of the impetus has come from the remarkable Italian series Montelbano, the name of a Sicilian commissario in Ragusa (Vigata)who was first featured in the skillfully crafted novellas of Andrea Camilleri.

Italians remain in the forefront of the genre as Montelbano was followed by similar high class productions set in Bologna, Ferrara, Turino, Milano, Palermo and Roma. A few are placed in evocative historical context. The French follow close behind with a rich variety of series ranging from a revived Maigret circa 2004(Bruno Cremer) and Frank Riva (Alain Delon) to the gritty Blood On The Docks (Le Havre) and the refined dramatizations of other Simenon tales. Others have jumped in: Austria, Germany (several) and all the Scandinavians. The former, Anatomy of Evil, offers us a dark yet riveting set of mysteries featuring a taciturn middle-aged police psychiatrist. Germany'sgem, Homicide Unit -- Istanbul, has a cast of talented Turkish Germans who speak German in a vividly portrayed contemporary Istanbul. Shows from the last mentioned region tend to be dreary and the characters uni-dimensional, so will receive short shrift in these comments.

Most striking to an American viewer are the strange mores and customs of the local protagonists compared to their counterparts over here. So are the physical traits as well as the social contexts. Here are a few immediately noteworthy examples. Tattoos and ****** hardware are strangely absent -- even among the bad guys. Green or orange hair is equally out of sight. The former, I guess, are disfiguring. The latter types are too crude for the sophisticated plots. European salons also seem unable to produce that commonplace style of artificial blond hair parted by a conspicuous streak of dark brown roots so favored by news anchors, talk show howlers and other female luminaries. Jeans, of course, are universal -- and usually filled in comely fashion. It's what people do in them (or out of them) that stands out.

First, almost no workout routines -- or animated talk about them. Nautilus? Nordic Track? Yoga pants? From roughly 50 programs, I can recall only one, in fact -- a rather humorous scene in an Istanbul health club that doubles as a drug depot. There is a bit of jogging, just a bit -- none in Italy. The Italians do do some swimming (Montalbano) and are pictured hauling cases of wine up steep cellar stairs with uncanny frequency. Kale appears nowhere on the menu; and vegan or gluten are words unspoken. Speaking of food, almost all of these characters actually sit down to eat lunch, albeit the main protagonist tends to lose an appetite when on the heels of a particularly elusive villain. Oblique references to cholesterol levels occur on but two occasions. Those omnipresent little containers of yoghurt are considered unworthy of camera time.

A few other features of contemporary American life are missing from the dialogue. I cannot recall the word "consultant' being uttered once. In the face of this amazing reality, one can only wonder how ****-kid 21 year old graduates from elite European universities manage to get that first critical foothold on the ladder of financial excess. Something else is lacking in the organizational culture of police departments, high-powered real estate operations, environmental NGOs or law firms: formal evaluations. In those retro environments, it all turns on long-standing personal ties, budgetary appropriations and actual accomplishment -- not graded memo writing skills. Moreover, the abrupt firing of professionals is a surprising rarity. No wonder Europe is lagging so far behind in the league table of billionaires produced annually and on-the-job suicides

Then, there is that staple of all American conversation -- real estate prices. They crop up very rarely -- and then only when retirement is the subject. Admittedly, that is a pretty boring subject for a tense crime drama -- however compelling it is for academics, investors, lawyers and doctors over here. Still, it fits a pattern.

None of the main characters devotes time to soliciting offers from other institutions -- be they universities, elite police units in a different city, insurance companies, banks, or architectural firms. They are peculiarly rooted where they are. In the U.S., professionals are constantly on the look-out for some prospective employer who will make them an attractive offer. That offer is then taken to their current institution along with the demand that it be matched or they'll be packing their bags. Most of the time, it makes little difference if that "offer" is from College Station, Texas or La Jolla, California. That doesn't occur in the programs that I've viewed. No one is driven to abandon colleagues, friends, a comfortable home and favorite restaurants for the hope of upward mobility. What a touching, if archaic way of viewing life.

The pedigree of actors help make all this credible. For example, the classiest female leads are a "Turk" (Idil Uner) who in real life studied voice in Berlin for 17 years and a transplanted Russo-Italian (Natasha Stephanenko) whose father was a nuclear physicist at a secret facility in the Urals. Each has a parallel non-acting career in the arts. It shows.

After viewing the first dozen or so mysteries of diverse nationality, an American viewer begins to feel an unease creeping up on him. Something is amiss; something awry; something missing. Where are those little bottles of natural water that are ubiquitous in the U.S? The ones with the ****** tip. Meetings of all sorts are held without their comforting presence. Receptionists -- glamorous or unglamorous alike -- make do without them. Heat tormented Sicilians seem immune to the temptation. Cyclists don't stick them in handlebar holders. Even stray teenagers and university students are lacking their company. Uneasiness gives way to a sensation of dread. For European civilization looks to be on the brink of extinction due to mass dehydration.

That's a pity. Any society where cityscapes are not cluttered with SUVs deserves to survive as a reserve of sanity on that score at least. It also allows for car chases through the crooked, cobbled streets of old towns unobstructed by herds of Yukons and Outbacks on the prowl for a double parking space. Bonus: Montelbano's unwashed Fiat has been missing a right front hubcap for 4 years (just like my car). To meet Hollywood standards for car chases he'd have to borrow Ingrid's red Maserati.

Social ******* reveals a number of even more bizarre phenomena. In conversation, above all. Volume is several decibels below what it is on American TV shows and in our society. It is not necessary to grab the remote to drop sound levels down into the 20s in order to avoid irreparable hearing damage. Nor is one afflicted by those piercing, high-pitched voices that can cut through 3 inches of solid steel. All manner of intelligible conversations are held in restaurants, cafes and other public places. Most incomprehensible are the moments of silence. Some last for up to a minute while the mind contemplates an intellectual puzzle or complex emotions. Such extreme behavior does crop up occasionally in shows or films over here -- but invariably followed by a diagnosis of concealed autism which provides the dramatic theme for the rest of the episode.

Tragedy is more common, and takes more subtle forms in these European dramatizations. Certainly, America has long since departed from the standard formula of happy endings. Over there, tragic endings are not only varied -- they include forms of tragedy that do not end in death or violence. The Sicilian series stands out in this respect.

As to violence, there is a fair amount as only could be expected in detective series. Not everyone can be killed decorously by slow arsenic poisoning. So there is some blood and gore. But there is no visual lingering on either the acts themselves or their grisly aftermaths. People bleed -- but without geysers of blood or minutes fixed on its portentous dripping. Violence is part of life -- not to be denied, not to be magnified as an object of occult fascination. The same with ****** abuse and *******.

Finally, it surprises an American to see how little the Europeans portrayed in these stories care about us. We tend to assume that the entire world is obsessed by the United States. True, our pop culture is everywhere. Relatives from 'over there' do make an occasional appearance -- especially in Italian shows. However, unlike their leaders who give the impression that they can't take an unscheduled leak without first checking with the White House or National Security Council in Washington, these characters manage quite nicely to handle their lives in their own way on their own terms.

Anyone who lives on the Continent or spends a lot of time there off the tourist circuit knows all this. The image presented by TV dramas may have the effect of exaggerating the differences with the U.S. That is not their intention, though. L'aile des vents battait à ma fenêtre ;
J'étais seul, courbé sur mon lit.
J'y regardais une place chérie,
Tiède encor d'un baiser brûlant ;
Et je songeais comme la femme oublie,
Et je sentais un lambeau de ma vie
Qui se déchirait lentement.

Je rassemblais des lettres de la veille,
Des cheveux, des débris d'amour.

Tout ce passé me criait à l'oreille
Ses éternels serments d'un jour.
Je contemplais ces reliques sacrées,
Qui me faisaient trembler la main :
Larmes du cœur par le cœur dévorées,
Et que les yeux qui les avaient pleurées
Ne reconnaîtront plus demain !

J'enveloppais dans un morceau de bure
Ces ruines des jours heureux.
Je me disais qu'ici-bas ce qui dure,
C'est une mèche de cheveux.
Comme un plongeur dans une mer profonde,
Je me perdais dans tant d'oubli.
De tous côtés j'y retournais la sonde,
Et je pleurais, seul, **** des yeux du monde,
Mon pauvre amour enseveli.

J'allais poser le sceau de cire noire
Sur ce fragile et cher trésor.
J'allais le rendre, et, n'y pouvant pas croire,
En pleurant j'en doutais encor.
Ah ! faible femme, orgueilleuse insensée,
Malgré toi, tu t'en souviendras !
Pourquoi, grand Dieu ! mentir à sa pensée ?
Pourquoi ces pleurs, cette gorge oppressée,
Ces sanglots, si tu n'aimais pas ?

Oui, tu languis, tu souffres, et tu pleures ;
Mais ta chimère est entre nous.
Eh bien ! adieu ! Vous compterez les heures
Qui me sépareront de vous.
Partez, partez, et dans ce cœur de glace
Emportez l'orgueil satisfait.
Je sens encor le mien jeune et vivace,
Et bien des maux pourront y trouver place
Sur le mal que vous m'avez fait.

Partez, partez ! la Nature immortelle
N'a pas tout voulu vous donner.
Ah ! pauvre enfant, qui voulez être belle,
Et ne savez pas pardonner !
Allez, allez, suivez la destinée ;
Qui vous perd n'a pas tout perdu.
Jetez au vent notre amour consumée ; -
Eternel Dieu ! toi que j'ai tant aimée,
Si tu pars, pourquoi m'aimes-tu ?

Mais tout à coup j'ai vu dans la nuit sombre
Une forme glisser sans bruit.
Sur mon rideau j'ai vu passer une ombre ;
Elle vient s'asseoir sur mon lit.
Qui donc es-tu, morne et pâle visage,
Sombre portrait vêtu de noir ?
Que me veux-tu, triste oiseau de passage ?
Est-ce un vain rêve ? est-ce ma propre image
Que j'aperçois dans ce miroir ?

Qui donc es-tu, spectre de ma jeunesse,
Pèlerin que rien n'a lassé ?
Dis-moi pourquoi je te trouve sans cesse
Assis dans l'ombre où j'ai passé.
Qui donc es-tu, visiteur solitaire,
Hôte assidu de mes douleurs ?
Qu'as-tu donc fait pour me suivre sur terre ?
Qui donc es-tu, qui donc es-tu, mon frère,
Qui n'apparais qu'au jour des pleurs ?

La vision.

- Ami, notre père est le tien.
Je ne suis ni l'ange gardien,
Ni le mauvais destin des hommes.
Ceux que j'aime, je ne sais pas
De quel côté s'en vont leurs pas
Sur ce peu de fange où nous sommes.

Je ne suis ni dieu ni démon,
Et tu m'as nommé par mon nom
Quand tu m'as appelé ton frère ;
Où tu vas, j'y serai toujours,
Jusques au dernier de tes jours,
Où j'irai m'asseoir sur ta pierre.

Le ciel m'a confié ton cœur.
Quand tu seras dans la douleur,
Viens à moi sans inquiétude.
Je te suivrai sur le chemin ;
Mais je ne puis toucher ta main,

"FULGURANCE DES ETRES,  DES LIEUX ET DES MOTS" (RECEUIL DE PAUL ARRIGHI)
J’ai bonheur  de vous faire connaître  l’édition,  ce  mois de juin 2014,    du livret de mes  poésies intitulé : «Fulgurance des êtres, des Lieux et des Mots».
Ce livret édité à compte d’auteur par   "Paul Daubin éditeur" et imprimé par la COREP. Il  comprend 104 pages avec 21 pages d’  illustrations, provenant pour la plupart de mes photographies en couleur.
La belle préface, aussi perspicace qu’emphatique est l’œuvre de mon ami,  l’authentique Poète Toulousain Christian Saint-Paul.  
   Ce Livret traite  sous les cinq chapitres  suivants:
- 1°) « Souvenirs d’Enfance »; ce sont mes  souvenirs les plus lointains de mon enfance en  Kabylie (Bougie et Akbou)  et à Luchon dans les Pyrénées.
-  2° )  Dans « Sur  les Chemins de Toulouse »,  je dépeins le Toulouse des quartiers de ma jeunesse, le faubourg Bonnefoy, Croix-Daurade, le  Lycée Raymond Naves des "années ardentes et tumultueuses" (1965-1972) ,  puis les autres  quartiers  pittoresques de Toulouse où j’ai résidé,   après mon retour en 1992 dans cette belle ville,  sans bien entendu oublier la Bibliothèque de recherche "Périgord" qui est pour beaucoup  mon lieu havre de Paix intérieure et mon  "refuge spirituel".
-  3°) «La Corse, L’ile enchanteresse»,  correspond à des poèmes en Français sur La Corse surtout la région de Vicu et le canton des "Deux Sorru", sur les  lieux et les arbres souvent emblématiques de cette île qui aimante et capte ses amoureux et ses fidèles et leur rend leur attachement au centuple.
- 4°) Les «Poésies de Révolte et de Feu » décrivent mes passions parfois mes indignations. Aujourd’hui que j’ai  atteint soixante ans, l’âge de la sagesse, j’ai encore  gardé vivant cette faculté de m’indigner et parfois  de me révolter. Les poèmes nous parlent  du grand poète Italien Giacomo Leopardi,  de la « Retirada » blessure faite à l’Esprit jamais refermée pour les enfants et les amis de  "Toulouse l'Espagnole",  de Mikis Theodorakis, de l'assassinat de John Lennon et de l'action et de la dérision de  Coluche, etc  
- 5 °) Le  « Renouveau des saisons et petits bonheurs »  traite  des saisons tout particulièrement des somptuosités de l'automne,  des lieux que j’ai aimés,   de la création et de la boisson du  vin et ce n'est pas le moindre de mes reconnaissances,   de nos compagnons les Chiens.

S'étendant sur les côtes du cimetière
La maison des morts l'encadrait comme un cloître
À l'intérieur de ses vitrines
Pareilles à celles des boutiques de modes
Au lieu de sourire debout
Les mannequins grimaçaient pour l'éternité

Arrivé à Munich depuis quinze ou vingt jours
J'étais entré pour la première fois et par hasard
Dans ce cimetière presque désert
Et je claquais des dents
Devant toute cette bourgeoisie
Exposée et vêtue le mieux possible
En attendant la sépulture

Soudain
Rapide comme ma mémoire
Les yeux se rallumèrent
De cellule vitrée en cellule vitrée
Le ciel se peupla d'une apocalypse
Vivace
Et la terre plate à l'infini
Comme avant Galilée
Se couvrit de mille mythologies immobiles
Un ange en diamant brisa toutes les vitrines
Et les morts m'accostèrent
Avec des mines de l'autre monde

Mais leur visage et leurs attitudes
Devinrent bientôt moins funèbres
Le ciel et la terre perdirent
Leur aspect fantasmagorique

Les morts se réjouissaient
De voir leurs corps trépassés entre eux et la lumière
Ils riaient de leur ombre et l'observaient
Comme si véritablement
C'eût été leur vie passée

Alors je les dénombrai
Ils étaient quarante-neuf hommes
Femmes et enfants
Qui embellissaient à vue d'œil
Et me regardaient maintenant
Avec tant de cordialité
Tant de tendresse même
Que les prenant en amitié
Tout à coup
Je les invitai à une promenade
**** des arcades de leur maison

Et tous bras dessus bras dessous
Fredonnant des airs militaires
Oui tous vos péchés sont absous
Nous quittâmes le cimetière

Nous traversâmes la ville
Et rencontrions souvent
Des parents des amis qui se joignaient
À la petite troupe des morts récents
Tous étaient si gais
Si charmants si bien portants
Que bien malin qui aurait pu
Distinguer les morts des vivants

Puis dans la campagne
On s'éparpilla
Deux chevau-légers nous joignirent
On leur fit fête
Ils coupèrent du bois de viorne
Et de sureau
Dont ils firent des sifflets
Qu'ils distribuèrent aux enfants

Plus **** dans un bal champêtre
Les couples mains sur les épaules
Dansèrent au son aigre des cithares

Ils n'avaient pas oublié la danse
Ces morts et ces mortes
On buvait aussi
Et de temps à autre une cloche
Annonçait qu'un nouveau tonneau
Allait être mis en perce

Une morte assise sur un banc
Près d'un buisson d'épine-vinette
Laissait un étudiant
Agenouillé à ses pieds
Lui parler de fiançailles

Je vous attendrai
Dix ans ans vingt ans s'il le faut
Votre volonté sera la mienne

Je vous attendrai
Toute votre vie
Répondait la morte

Des enfants
De ce monde ou bien de l'autre
Chantaient de ces rondes
Aux paroles absurdes et lyriques
Qui sans doute sont les restes
Des plus anciens monuments poétiques
De l'humanité

L'étudiant passa une bague
À l'annulaire de la jeune morte
Voici le gage de mon amour
De nos fiançailles
Ni le temps ni l'absence
Ne nous feront oublier nos promesses
Et un jour nous aurons une belle noce
Des touffes de myrte
À nos vêtements et dans vos cheveux
Un beau sermon à l'église
De longs discours après le banquet
Et de la musique

De la musique
Nos enfants
Dit la fiancée
Seront plus beaux plus beaux encore
Hélas ! la bague était brisée
Que s'ils étaient d'argent ou d'or
D'émeraude ou de diamant
Seront plus clairs plus clairs encore
Que les astres du firmament
Que la lumière de l'aurore
Que vos regards mon fiancé
Auront meilleure odeur encore
Hélas ! la bague était brisée
Que le lilas qui vient d'éclore
Que le thym la rose ou qu'un brin
De lavande ou de romarin

Les musiciens s'en étant allés
Nous continuâmes la promenade

Au bord d'un lac
On s'amusa à faire des ricochets
Avec des cailloux plats
Sur l'eau qui dansait à peine

Des barques étaient amarrées
Dans un havre
On les détacha
Après que toute la troupe se fut embarquée
Et quelques morts ramaient
Avec autant de vigueur que les vivants

À l'avant du bateau que je gouvernais
Un mort parlait avec une jeune femme
Vêtue d'une robe jaune
D'un corsage noir
Avec des rubans bleus et d'un chapeau gris
Orné d'une seule petite plume défrisée

Je vous aime
Disait-il
Comme le pigeon aime la colombe
Comme l'insecte nocturne
Aime la lumière

Trop ****
Répondait la vivante
Repoussez repoussez cet amour défendu
Je suis mariée
Voyez l'anneau qui brille
Mes mains tremblent
Je pleure et je voudrais mourir

Les barques étaient arrivées
À un endroit où les chevau-légers
Savaient qu'un écho répondait de la rive
On ne se lassait point de l'interroger
Il y eut des questions si extravagantes
Et des réponses tellement pleines d'à-propos
Que c'était à mourir de rire
Et le mort disait à la vivante

Nous serions si heureux ensemble
Sur nous l'eau se refermera
Mais vous pleurez et vos mains tremblent
Aucun de nous ne reviendra
On reprit terre et ce fut le retour
Les amoureux s'entr'aimaient
Et par couples aux belles bouches
Marchaient à distances inégales
Les morts avaient choisi les vivantes
Et les vivants
Des mortes
Un genévrier parfois
Faisait l'effet d'un fantôme

Les enfants déchiraient l'air
En soufflant les joues creuses
Dans leurs sifflets de viorne
Ou de sureau
Tandis que les militaires
Chantaient des tyroliennes
En se répondant comme on le fait
Dans la montagne

Dans la ville
Notre troupe diminua peu à peu
On se disait
Au revoir
À demain
À bientôt
Beaucoup entraient dans les brasseries
Quelques-uns nous quittèrent
Devant une boucherie canine
Pour y acheter leur repas du soir

Bientôt je restai seul avec ces morts
Qui s'en allaient tout droit
Au cimetière

Sous les Arcades
Je les reconnus
Couchés
Immobiles
Et bien vêtus
Attendant la sépulture derrière les vitrines

Ils ne se doutaient pas
De ce qui s'était passé
Mais les vivants en gardaient le souvenir
C'était un bonheur inespéré
Et si certain
Qu'ils ne craignaient point de le perdre

Ils vivaient si noblement
Que ceux qui la veille encore
Les regardaient comme leurs égaux
Ou même quelque chose de moins
Admiraient maintenant
Leur puissance leur richesse et leur génie
Car y a-t-il rien qui vous élève
Comme d'avoir aimé un mort ou une morte
On devient si pur qu'on en arrive
Dans les glaciers de la mémoire
À se confondre avec le souvenir
On est fortifié pour la vie
Et l'on n'a plus besoin de personne.

Florilèges de  trois poésies sur le café «Naziunale»
de Vicu

1- Premier Poème sur le café de Vicu
(Été 2010)
Un marronnier et trois tilleuls
Sur la fraîcheur comme un clin d'œil
Sous le soleil immobile
Dans l'ombrage des charmilles

Une façade de granit
Sur une salle composite
Sur les murs plusieurs footballeurs
Et d'un vieux berger la vigueur.

Pouvoir s'asseoir, se reposer
Et par-dessus tout siroter
Un verre de bière pression
Sans un souci à l'horizon.

A côté de vous, il fait chaud
Mais le zéphyr souffle tantôt
Sur votre peau, une caresse
Il faut dire que rien ne presse.
Une torpeur qui vous saisit
Un parfum de moments choisis
Mais après tout c'est bien l'été
Et son cortège de beautées.

Dans votre verre un pastis
Comme une senteur d'anis
De jolies filles font le détour
Parées de leurs jolis atours

Verre levé vous plaisantez
Pour l'œil des belles attirer
Mais les coquettes vont leur chemin
En masquant bien leurs vrais desseins





2 - Deuxième Poème au café de Vicu
(Été 2012)

Oh café de Vicu
Tilleuls et marronniers
Aux ombrages si frais
Apaisant les cieux lourds
Et les chaleurs de plomb.

Un chat à la queue courbe
Vient chercher les caresses
Que des femmes distraites
par des hommes ombrageux
Distraitement lui donnent.

Un tempo de langueur
Violone tes douceurs ;
et la « Serena » fraîche
fait plus que rafraichir
notre quête de soifs.

Oh café de Vicu
Tu sais nous préserver
Des vains emballements,
Des fureurs dérisoires
Propres à nous gâcher
Le songe de nos vies.






3 - Troisième poème sur le café «naziunale» de Vicu
(Été 2013)

Une large façade de granit, percée par deux larges portes,
donnant sur une vaste salle a haute cheminée.
Un marronnier et un tilleul vous font don d'une fraîcheur bienvenue,
A l'intérieur comme une icône de la «belle époque» une photographie de groupe d'hommes Corses en canotiers ou feutres mous prenant fièrement la pose devant l'appareil a trépied et le photographe pénétré de son art.

En face l'on voit la mairie de couleur rose, a l'escalier ventru,
Sur le côté droit, une pharmacie antique, aux volets bleus,
Et puis vers onze heure, le tiers des tables sont mises pour les repas,
Et les jeunes serveuse pimpantes s'affairent,
pour poser les serviettes en papier et servir les mélancoliques buveurs de bière «Pietra», a l'arôme fin de châtaigne.

Proche de ma table de Formica vert, deux belles blondes aux coiffures soignées,
sirotent leurs cafés et commentent avec un sérieux excessif une brochure de géographie plastifiée.
Mais parfois sourires et rires viennent donner a l'air léger cette adorable féminité qui manque tant à notre monde de brutes.
L’air est comme cristallin, et la lourde chaleur de Vicu semble conjurée par ce café-terrasse qui est havre de paix et de fraîche douceur.

Deux Corses, à la barbe bien taillée lisent avec une étrange attention, l’édition journalière de «Corse-Matin», interrompus par un ami de leur génération portant beau un feutre gris.
Les épagneuls du café sont curieusement rentrés dans la grande salle, alors qu'hier ils étaient accroupis en terrasse comme aimantes par la chaleur.
Il est maintenant 0nze heure trente docteur Sweitzer et «l'Humanité reste toujours au carrefour» hésitant entre feu vert et feu rouge dont traitèrent si bien Radovan Richta.
Mais, tant pis, la question ne se résoudra pas dans les douces langueurs de Vicu.
Les premiers dineurs ne se pressent pas aux tables dressés.
L’effleure un peu à Vicu, comme un parfum de l'Alambra, ou les repas sont repoussés **** dans l'après-midi ou dans la nuit.
A l'inverse, les couche-**** viennent se convaincre de leur réveil en s'attablant en terrasse demandant un double café, en passant commande d’un double expresso.

Qu'on brûla... (je fais un impair !)
Mais Marseille ! c'est une femme
Qui se lève, au bord de la mer !

Le Havre a votre amour, et d'une ;
Son port, et de deux ; qu'il soit fier !
Mais Marseille ! c'est une brune
Qui sourit, au bord de la mer !

Comme le fauve qu'il rappelle,
Lyon porte beau, par un temps clair ;
Mais Marseille ! est une « bien belle »
Qu'on salue, an bord de la mer ;

Les vignes où vole la grive
Près de Dijon n'ont pas le ver ;
Mais Marseille ! est une « bien vive »
Qui chantonne, au bord de la mer ;

Bordeaux, avec sa gloire éparse
Sur vingt océans, a grand air !
Mais Marseille ! c'est une garce
Qui vous grise, au bord de la mer ;

Le beffroi d'Arras se redresse
Comme la hune au vent d'hiver ;
Mais Marseille ! est une bougresse,
Qui tempête, au bord de la mer ;

Laval est un duc, ma Mignonne,
Dont le poiré n'est pas amer ;
Mais Marseille ! est une « bien bonne »
Qui se calme, au bord de la mer ;

Toulouse est un ténor qui traîne
Où frise peut-être un peu l'r...
Mais Marseille ! est une sirène
Qui chuchotte, au bord de la mer ;

Clermont a ses volcans où rôde
Le souvenir d'un feu d'enfer ;
Mais Marseille ! est une « bien chaude »
Qui vous baise, au bord de la mer ;

Grenoble a Bayard, la prouesse
Faite homme et l'honneur fait de fer ;
Mais Marseille est une déesse
Qu'on adore, au bord de la mer ;

Toulon aura l'âme sereine
Quand on aura purgé son air ;
Mais Marseille, elle, est une reine
Qui se couche au bord de la mer !

Elle adore Paris, Madame,
Paris est l'homme qu'il lui faut,
Car Marseille, c'est une femme
Qui n'a pas le moindre défaut.

Paris, le lui rend bien, du reste,
Il lui dit : Si tu t'asseyais ?
Car Marseille n'a pas la peste
Et n'a plus l'accent marseillais !
De Marseille, moi ? de Marseille ?
Tu veux que j'en sois, c'est trop fort !
M'entends-tu dire qu'il « soleille » ?
Je ne suis pas né dans le Nord,

Je dois en convenir sans honte ;
Mais on peut venir du Midi,
En chair, en os, et même... en fonte,
Sans sortir de Lonchamps, pardi !

Si j'en étais, m'en cacherais-je ?
Au contraire, j'en serais fier :
Il y tombe aussi de la neige,
Et comme au Havre... on a la mer.

Je ne vois pas la différence ;
Affaire de goût, de couleur.
Du reste, Marseille est en France,
Sur la carte, aussi bien qu'Harfleur...

Voyons ! qui ferait des manières
Pour en être s'il en était,
La ville n'est pas des dernières,
Foutre non ! car Elle existait

Déjà, depuis belle lurette,
Qu'on ne parlait pas de Paris,
Et qu'aucune autre n'était prête
À loger ça... de ses chéris ;

Oui, Marseille était grande fille,
Que toutes les autres, comprends,
Les moins gosses de la famille
N'avaient pas encor de parents.

Elle est antique !... oh ! mais !... pas vieille ;
C'est au contraire la cité
La plus jeune et la plus vermeille,
N'offensons pas la vérité.

Les femmes y sont !... Valentine,
Tu les aimerais, comme moi,
Si tu voyais la taille fine
De Valentine, comme Toi ;

C'est ma cousine... elle demeure
Ma foi ! par là, pas **** du port...
Ce que je sais, ou que je meure,
C'est qu'elle aussi l'a beau... le port !

Toutes les autres sont comme elle,
Et sans titre, ou sur parchemin,
Des reines, jusqu'à la semelle,
Avec du poil... pas dans la main.

Après ça, vois comme nous sommes
