DaSH the Hopeful
Tonight, I spoke into the darkness,
No stars to light my way,
       The black void all encompassing

My words drifting up in ribbons,
I waited for something, anything to happen

I felt a rumble that was akin to ripples emanating from a drop of water hitting a puddle

I was small next to the impossible,
And when it spoke back, it changed me

The blank canvas of stark black was pierced by blades of light,
The sky becoming a shutter in a rain storm
           Blowing open and closed
The words came and wrapped themselves across my body in its entirety
        Constricting my air flow

             I felt myself shatter
  An implosion of feeble glass
Ricocheting through a skeleton of paper, reflecting the brightness above inside ripped skin

                I was nothing.
                I didn't exist.
I floated in an incomprehensible place that had no end, no walls

     No ceiling or floor

            Just illumination in every direction

                    I opened my eyes

And was blinded by an incredible radiance

I shut my eyes tight and swatted in front of me
My hand struck something metal and I yelped in pain

I shot up and stared downward
Towards the desklamp unplugged on the floor

Breathing heavily, I sat upright in my bed,
*Struggling to pull away words that had already sunken in
Writer's block
The best poet ever is the one who looks at you like nothing else
And they would dissolve into ashes if they were without you
Its a hefty responsibility
Holding a life in your hands
That's why love
Is so hard to understand.

RAJ NANDY
Dear Poet Friends, I hope you like this slice of Early History presented
below in simple verse. Please do read the short notes at the end, before giving your comments.  Thanks, - Raj

ARCHIMEDES : THE PIONEERING
       STREAKER OF HISTORY!

There lived in the Third Century BC, in the Sicilian
town of Syracuse, then a Greek colony,
A Greek mathematician named Archimedes.
He was tasked by King Hiero of his town,
To find the purity of gold in his crown;
Suspicious of the goldsmith having mixed
some material of inferior kind,
Which the King wanted Archimedes to find!

So, Archimedes lost in thought one day,
Entered the public bath on his way!
And as his body began to get submerged,
He happened to notice perchance,
Water spilling over from the tub!
The answer suddenly flashed across his
mind,
And he jumped up leaving everything
behind,
Wearing only his birthday suit,
Running through the street of Syracuse,
Exclaiming -  “Eureka! Eureka!”
(I have found it! I have found it!)
Perhaps to become the first known streaker
of History!
While establishing the Principles of Buoyancy!
@ (see notes)

Archimedes, son of the astronomer Pheidias,
studied at the great Alexandrian city,
Remembered even to this day for his many
pioneering works, -
In Hydrostatics, Mechanics, and Geometry.
With his ingenious mechanical discoveries,
He held the great Roman galleys of Marcellus
at bay,
For more than three years, as Plutarch the
Roman Historian says!    + (see notes)
Later one day, while lost in deep thought,
When some intricate problem of geometry
he was trying to resolve,
Refused to hear Marcellus' bidding,
To be slain by the Roman soldiers who had
come to fetch him!
O those Romans, with lesser brains and more
brawn!

And some hundred and thirty years after
his death in 75 BC,
Cicero, then the Roman Governor of Sicily,
Found the tomb of great Archimedes, near the
Agrigentine Gate, over grown with bushes and
thorns;
Where he lay buried in the scented dust of History!

NOTES:
@ Principle of Buoyancy = any floating object displaces its own
weight of fluid. So weight displaced by a crown of pure gold and
the one already made could be compared to find the truth!
+ Archimedes designed large stone throwers, & crossbows, and
also grappling hooks using large cranes to grab Roman ships and
capsize them!

What happens ...

As the I-15 climbs the sierra hills
the surrounding desert bush
tumble dried scenic route
Bolder Northward to Boulder City
the size of a town really
lets not digress now as we reach the summit
driving 5 passed the 75 mph limit
the valley below us now opens wide
now as the evening cools us
open car widows and rock anthems
about Love, lost, and forever 'til the end of...

What happens on the way ...
if one is restless, a running mind a hamster wheel
be the silent witness observant as
the stars that are more brilliant in the dark
highways of red white light bulbs
head and rear breaks
polka dots of glow on the late lanes
this interstate night tour
play the mute passenger screaming loudly with your eyes
and watch and listen (black asphalt hum)
feel and sense with thoughtful heart fiber
of being as One
and as a witness must see also must know
where we're headed
Billboard signs say "Dinner & A Show"
down in the valley soon to call home...

What happens ...
to each their own manifest,
destiny is your experience accepted
or refuse and deny your living as proof
we can tell one another how it goes
or if suddenly how it went
the words of a traveler (knows it does
no justice)
take a trip--find out for yourself--discover
what was happening
now that we are closer to here
sin city neon bright
welcomes you
heat waves and winter black ice
flash floods thunder lightning showgirls
gamblers loss of identities
*** ***** DUI and Mormons doing ****
what happened?
(If not yet been had)

The artificial life and transient folk
the only bad is being good
welcomes you
with bright lights and carousel hours
spinning tea cups and misplaced wonderment
eyes open wide asleep
loss of purpose and colorful dreams
running as one (like them)
in the hamster wheel...

Why ask --why--what happens
when we've all been out of place
where are we now that we're here
and its elsewhere from where we should
Desperation & Needles
black and jack and stratosphere suicides
if you look on the map
off the walls shine and glowing
it says "you are here"

yet we're still askance & confused
again asking
What happened ... here?
Who were you, when?
And again good friends to the end
still the road is paved
with good intentions and afterglow
if you happened by
Upon
the Strip...
