Not all full-mooned nights are created equal.
some, a glimpse of light
like the globe of a streetlamp
so distant his index finger could block it.
a decisive poke
at the heavens as he stood.
a silly pause
in his late-night pace.

but that evening, another hand took his moon.
below, his cradled the rough clay
of a mug made for someone else’s palms.
it was taken fully
if just for a moment. a brief ellipse.
a midnight sip.
and, sure as he was of the inevitability,
his breath held for its return.

Roses,
Highlight my bruises.
Sunflowers,
Illuminate Hidden confessions;

Softly,
Like petals;
I roam from wonder to another
Yet Swiftly
I vanish.
Momma what’s a life in shadows?
She asks the moon, because momma’s long gone.
Are they pretty, all faceless and shifting?
Or are they h a z y ?
Does the running woman in the rain believe herself a bird?
Where’s her flock momma?
Is she l o n e l y ?
Lost about the stone’s pure grain and glory?
I’m sorry you’ve got
To share yours with the sun.
Does he know, momma?
Does the sun know
About the shadows?
Maybe if he’d come down
He could keep them c o m p a n y.
I would
If I could.
Momma what’s a life in shadows?

you never asked to read my poetry
maybe that was the sign.
i told you i wrote for fun,
you shrugged and moved on.
red flags went up everywhere, but i didn’t bother looking
you paint me in green
temporarily
delicately
softly
offering an expansive sanctuary
of memories i had long forgotten
your face has changed
but your eyes remain the same
cold and detached at first sight
you have a softness in you that seldom few see
i wish i cradled it tighter
...
they see us walk among the pines
chuckling at our naivety
i wish their claims held no bearing over us
