I Refuse
D E L AA J A YY Jan 2018
I refuse to allow anyone to make me hate,
Anyone to make me bitter,
Anyone to make me discriminate
against a sister or a brother race.

I refuse to allow any man to change
my opinions about myself,
about love, or about anyone else.

I refuse to allow any woman or man
to ruin my day, to claim my smile,
to declare my day of happiness has run its race,
has run its mile, is now over and done with.

I do not desire to be lusted after by another human.
I do not crave the attention of any man
who has yet to see me, yet to meet me,
yet to love me in the delicate and comical way that I deserve.

I do not itch to be touched.

The only hunger that I have is to find love
and to find it in its purest form,
And I refuse to settle for less than what’s best for me,
for that is something that only I know,
but something that others may see.

I refuse to settle for less.

Where My Heart Is
D E L AA J A YY Jan 2018
I lean on my own intuition, not on the color of his skin
Because his mind is incredible to explore
and his thoughts are a comforting way to begin.
I seek pleasure in the curves of his smile
As he pulls me to his chest  and breathes me in,
And I find hope in the sound of his laughter
While he embraces the love he has found within.

I learn empathy from the helping hand he lends to his friends
As he gives generously and supports selflessly
And as he protects my beating heart he always tries to mend.
I have discovered love in its purest form thanks to him
Because of his god-sent courage and simplest acceptance
And because he has forgiven my past without cradling any sins.

Midnight Memories
D E L AA J A YY Feb 2017
All of the thoughts of midnight crowd my mind at night.
How can I possibly smile when you are happily gone--
Miserably present in my own mind, but faithfully out of sight,
Just me and these midnight memories at night.

I reminisce about your warmth that once held my love for you in place,
The warmth that sparked the fire that once burned so bright,
And the warmth of your skin while I caressed your sweet face
In the heated dark of the midnight memories that night.

But soon all of these midnight memories will fade
Into the cold loneliness scattered with undeserving rage.
Sweet nostalgia will envelope the bitter words of unrequited love's page,
And I'll soon realize that the times we shared and the love we made
Have slowly disappeared into the night.

I will no longer have these midnight memories,
And it will be just me, myself, and I..
Trying to gather new memories at midnight tonight.

The Contents of My Heart
D E L AA J A YY Nov 2016
Here lies the contents of my heart:
In perfect pieces along the very edge of stitches,
There was once a time when nothing could keep us apart,
And in that time we were vessels that held the world's sweetest riches,
But now the taste of your name only leaves me ****.
The syllables roll off my tongue, leaving only bitter wishes,
So don't question how we ended up here; I don't know where to start.
Your scratched promise had more than its fair share of glitches.
You and I have yet to master the necessary art
Of arguing without leaving the other malicious,
And as a result we discover true feelings whenever we depart
Because our cross cultural fairy tales are exactly that--
Fictitious.
This is one of my favorite original poems, and I'm so very excited to share it with you. If you care to read more of my poems, check out my poetry blog https://delaajay.wordpress.com/. Make sure to let me know you dropped by.

Rearview Mirror
D E L AA J A YY Aug 2016
I see my future in the rearview mirror of my fast-paced life
With my thoughts spinning out of control,
And I can't seem to tame it
Or control the fact that I fall asleep with you on my mind,
Craving your presence or at least your silhouette along the walls.

The more I stare in this rearview mirror,
The more I fade into the darkness,
The more I settle into a creeping melancholia.

When I look into this rearview mirror,
My life tumbles more into a downward spiral ,
Leaving only the rough edges out for others to see,
But I can't imagine my life with anyone else.

Thinking the Unthinkable
D E L AA J A YY Aug 2016
"It was never supposed to be this way," she whispered
With tears in her eyes,
Thinking the unthinkable.
He enveloped her in his love completely,
Completely callusing unrequited love's blister.

His heart grew more fond of her with each waking minute
He spent cradling her thoughts,
Thinking the unthinkable.
He was pushing his own love's limit.

"Let's break the rules."
They agreed to endure love,
Thinking the unthinkable.
His past had missed her chance, and hers missed his,
But somehow, someway,
These two, thinking the unthinkable,
Had found a new drunken love that caused speech to slur.

The Screw Up Child
D E L AA J A YY Aug 2016
Silent cries darken even the brightest places of her soul
As they broach the subject of her faults:
Irresponsible, unempowered, unworthy, insignificant.
Irresponsible in the face of problems,
Unempowered to the point of deafening silence,
Unworthy of anyone's blessings and everyone's love,
And insignificant enough not to have any worth in the world.

She was a simple, scary mistake,
One that could never be erased,
But she's here now,
And she's been here for quite some time.
Now everyone wonders:
How much longer will she last?

Love is Needed
D E L AA J A YY Aug 2016
If there is ever a time when love is needed,
Then the time will always be now,
At this very moment when the world is conceited
And no one makes good on his vow,
When all is said and done and hatred has impeded
Tradition that people say won't matter anyhow.
There will always be a time when more love is needed,
And the time will always be now.

I am Enough
D E L AA J A YY Aug 2016
I am enough,
My crooked smile and my chubby chin
I am enough,
My thunder thighs and my beautiful grin.
I am enough,
My glorious eyes and my reflection's twin.
I am enough,
Be it super thick or super thin.
I am enough,
With one love and without several men.
I am enough,
My golden, bronzed, and sun-kissed skin.
I am enough,
No matter where I'm going or where I've been.
I am enough,
Who I am is not a sin.
And I will always be enough.
