Lavender for Luck
When we chance
upon each other
years later,
you will ask me

          do you still write?

and I will answer

           of course I do.

you took my heart
with you when you left,
not my hands.

The first hag closed her only eye,
She murmured soft “I’ll tell you why,
Violence, it comes along with life,
As does sadness, death and strife,
An agent of change, to use so well,
It’s not who starts, but who will fail,”

The next hag shook her gray locks free,
She crooned, “dear one, can’t you see,
A natural order, again revealed,
If they won’t talk, they **** or be killed,
The sun will rise up, yellow or red,
And love remains, for living and dead,”

The third hag cackled, grinning wide,
She laughed, “there isn’t a right side,
Glory for some, a winner shall rise,
To give their own mix, of truth and lies,
Fear not the changes, face each day,
The soul continues, come what may,”

Regret

mad and moonly
under me so new
sprouting in love
the seed of lust

half curled fronds
brushing the sand
where desire is set
and in my breath spent

warm summer winds
the night have wet
with the spray of seas
soaked in regret

How can the fireflies flit
from a bough to a highest place
just below the Milky Way,
without you here.

How can the blooms of summer
arise in your absence,
how can the cherish that
sparkles between young adults
conversing on a park bench -
go on, without us,
in my memory,
we walk by them,
holding hands, as,
we were once them.

Is this but a tragic dream -
as I pray over your
bedding of repose,
your gleaming white headstone,
in a long unwavering line
of other white headstones,
then, sweet assurance
speaks to me,
though the song of taps
separated us,
one day, the song of taps
will unite us.
In Loving memory of my late husband, who was a Navy veteran.

gods

your gods are weak,
your gods are silent,
your gods don't speak to you
when all you need
is someone to confide in.
your gods are wrong,
your gods are violent,
your gods ignite the fire of war
and never tell you what to do
with all this rage inside your bones;
the fire seems so very holy
unless it's you they choose to burn.
your gods pretend,
your gods play games,
your gods don't walk around
among this land
of misery and death.
your gods know best,
your gods keep quiet,
your gods don't speak to you
when all you need
is someone to confide in.
and when you're on your own,
when all the hope is lost,
do they look down at you,
your everloving gods?
by the time
you realize
by the time
you care
by the time
it all clicks
and you want
me there
i'll be
very far
i didn't
wanna wait
by the time
you want me
it'll be
too late

Perchance

Perchance, my shy love,
we can unite passionately
as slumbering magnolias
awaken with the moon's
fancy,
in the summer gardens.
