Skin
Shilpa Shyam Aug 2014
An ode to Skin,
at first succulent ,finally blotchy,
yet forever a wonderful thing,
keeping the outside out ,
and the inside in...

My vivid dreams
Shilpa Shyam Jan 2015
Let me forget that I exist
Become a speck, blending in with the atmosphere
an observer to the insides of my head

Sound ferries its cargo of meaning into our receptive minds
Loud are thoughts although constructed with silent sound

Imagination waits at the bench
while thoughts play rough and tumble
jostling and shoving ,
following the rules of consciousness' game

But at night when the stadium clears
images rush out, they dance and cheer
sneaking past the fetters of
language and reason

Ephemeral thoughts
Shilpa Shyam Jan 2014
Gems generated in the mind
Slip and slide along the walls
Of the shower
And whirl down with the relentless
Water,gushing down the drain
Washed away forever.
A profound loss of the all too brief life
of profound thoughts.

A real job
Shilpa Shyam Jan 2014
Unlike you,I
have a real job, he says,
Insinuating,
That the 1331 diapers changed,
The bleary eyed 2:00am feeds,
The mountains of laundry washed and folded
Are of course,
Imaginary.
Oh no, it’s not a “real “ job or a job at all ,
to  raise a child,
No perks for working weekends,
Or cards sporting fancy titles,
Or performance bonuses,
For ***** training

Oh no, not at all,
But I’d like the remind you,
Civilization was not not not built
By men in suits, but,
By generations of mothers
Taming Neanderthal toddlers

Misery loves mortals
Shilpa Shyam Aug 2014
Miserable Mortals
in a moment
you wallow in despair
and yet in another
you are ecstatic
its ironic
the liberation from your misery
lies in the triumph of your mortality
Shilpa Shyam Jan 2014
Sometimes as I lay still, eyes closed,
Bathed in memories,
Of riveting detail,
I'm not unlike Gulliver, on an island , pinned down by the Liliputs.
Awake, but, I do not know where ,shackled as I am,in time and space,
by these snippets of reverie, staking claim
to my mind
And I am for now, a felled giant.

Now
Shilpa Shyam Jan 2014
Now
There is no forever
Just a series of moments ,
like stepping stones on a pond
As you jump from one to another
The longest forever is when you
Wet your toes
Between  a moment and two

Transition
Shilpa Shyam Jan 2014
As I try to Haiku
while you drift
to sleep,my wee one
I'm struck by how life waltzes
like the energy in a wave, a zephyr of color,
I'm a rainbow fading as you
slowly gloriously gain your splendor

Disconnect
Shilpa Shyam Aug 2016
your mind speaks a language
mine does not,
but our bodies complete
each other's thoughts
what does my skin decipher about you
that my cortex fails to?
your mouth bestows
kind kisses
while its words
ruthlessly wound.
