She runs downhill
With the wind at her back.
She has wings on her feet
Smoke trails from the back
But she trips on a lace
And falls to the ground
Flat on her face
With a cracking sound
And tears spring to her eyes
And the lip starts to shake
Taken by surprise
Did anything break?
Invincible no more
With blood galore
But an angel wraps her wings around her
And she feels eternal love surround her
Nothing deep here - just a poem about comforting my daughter after she fell. I don't see myself as an angel but she does :)

Carried away on the crest of a wave,
seeing nothing but beauty,
ignorant of the imminent danger
and his own mortality.
his heart starts to pound
with the beat of a funeral drum
aware before he is
that all is not well.
Too many kids dying recently due to synthetic drugs :(

If this is all there is,
I will die happy
Another one dedicated to my beautiful girls

In it's infinte glory,
Boils down to timing.

Hands
Once so big
That spanned across my back
And kept me safe.
That stroked my hair
To ease my childhood pains.
That clasped my small hand
To protect me from harm.
Those hands like giant's
That held me as a newborn,
Now withered
And aged,
Ravaged by the passing of time,
Still hold my heart
Happy father's day to my own daddy & to my wonderful husband **

They move like dancers
Fuelled by bloodlust.
Heavy hands weighted
With the hopes of a nation.
An ampitheatre of
Fluorescent lights.
The chariots of the colosseum
Move through the shadows
And the savage beasts
Walk on two feet.

When did you grow old?
I blinked and missed it.
The years were surely
Only seconds in time.
As the grand old trees
Embrace the winter
With the grim resolve
Of that which cannot be avoided,
I find myself wondering,
And fearing,
When the leaves shall fall
For the final time.
niamh May 2015
With eyes
Black as coal,
I stirred the
Embers within.
The fire came
To life
And roared with
Passion unleashed.
Burnt my fingertips
And singed my skin
With a heat
I'd never felt before.
But all too soon
The embers died
And I was left
With nothing
But ash
And a mess
To clean up

She reached out to him
He reached out to her
Nerves jangling
And lips shredded by unsure teeth
Eyes widened in anticipation
And adrenaline pumping.
Limbs shaking in fear
And nervous excitement
He reached out to her
She reached out to him
They reached out and touched the stars

Fly struggles in vain
Spider's eyes gleam in darkness
The silken trap worked

Spider crawls on paths
Spotted by the silent bird
Swoops in for the ****

Cat slinks through the grass
Eyes locked on newly plump bird
Poised for the attack

Echoes in her blood
Ancient times long forgotten
The call of the hunt

You mistook
My past for my present.
It's a never ending game
With ever changing rules.
Don't mistake my presence
As a symbol of acquiescence.
I will not play the fool
'Friends' should never judge
niamh Jun 2015
The sun set
On my childhood.
I became a
Creature of the night,
A brief indulgence
In all things dark
Before you brought me
Back into the light

You can't force a feeling.
Your pen will not be fooled.
Ink dries in mockery
Of your obvious lies
Leaving an imprint
Like the ghost of a shadow
Of someone you wish you were

The passion ignited
and the forest burned.
Old oaks charred,
saplings disintegrated,
devastation beyond
imagination,
a boundless, barren
desert of
scorched ground
and rancid air,
with the skeletons
of remembered beauty
standing sentry.
But who lit the match,
love or hate?
niamh May 2015
I walk down this
long, hard path
surrounded by a dark
and relentless forest,
and my soul is weary
and my spirit is low.
My feet are bruised,
my arms bear scratchmarks
from beautiful harmful thorns,
my muscles ache
and I dream of lying down.
But you push me on
and you hold me up.
You're the whisper of
a breeze on the back of my neck,
an angel upon my shoulder.
You're the reason
I keep on walking this path.
And I know
one day
you'll guide me home
niamh May 2015
In times of hardship
I take comfort in the fact
You stand beside me
niamh Jun 2015
The summer sun
sets in your eyes
And the stars
come at night to see you
Apparently I never write anything nice for my husband....so here's a little snippet

She reminds me of a foxglove
Eyes drawn to her like steel to a magnet
She reminds me of a foxglove
Her sweet perfume an olfactory pleasure
She reminds me of a foxglove
Tall, slender, beautiful
And just as poisonous

A precious gem
Within something
So fragile.
A ruby
In the folds
Of a rose.
Thorns are an ugly
Necessity,
Protection from
Lovers and foes.
niamh Jun 2015
Buried emotions
Breaking free
From their constraints.
Dormant thoughts
Coming alive
In pools of molten lava.
Love,
Untethered and unashamed
Shines brightly.
Fears pulled
Struggling and screaming
Into the light.
The switch was flicked
And poetry came
Like an unstoppable current,
Bringing me to life
After many many years of not writing, I came across this site & now can't seem to stop! Cathartic in the extreme!

In times of adversity
We will not be constrained
This river runs free.

We might flow down to the sea
or end up being drained.
In times of adversity

There is no need for lock and key
We will not live in chains
This river runs free.

We will not dwell on misery
will not be overcome by pain
In times of adversity

As we flow tirelessly
on a relentless campaign
This river runs free

We will not live in slavery
We will not be restrained
In times of adversity
This river runs free

Come now darkened night,
Shine your saturated light
Upon my nightmares.

Stars have no reply
For the wherefore and the why
Within my nightmares.

Dawn now dries my tears
But it cannot ease the fears
Of living nightmares.

He is here no more,
Locked behind a keyless door.
Unending nightmare.

How I have missed you.
How you smell.
How you taste.
How you feel in my hand.
How you liberate me like no other.
How you make me laugh.
How you make me cry.
How you sit with me through lonely nights and sunsets.
How you quench my desire.
Ah,
My sweet, sweet vino
Just for fun.I really do enjoy my drink :)

Thoughts today
Like bombs
Coming without warning
And leaving me blind-sided

For a second

Then dissipating
Into an endless stream of smoke.

I reach out
But it's gone

The emotions
Building behind
This dam
Threaten to
Drown me

Upon shattered dreams
And broken hearts
We build our future.

I dreamt of you last night
And swear I
Could still feel your kiss
Upon my cheek when I woke.
Your phantom scent
Was upon my pillow
And the ghostly pressure
Of arms were around my waist.
But I can't keep
Looking to the past.
My neck's too sore
niamh Jul 2015
The words of last night
Written by the hand of a ghost
And I read them anew
Under light of a new day
And worry that
My very own Mr Hyde
Was lured out once more
With fermented grapes

Sometimes I think my hand and heart come together in dark corners to have hushed conversations about what to write.
Brain intercedes to tell them they can't do it without him and he should always be consulted.
Heart and hand run away when brain's not looking and write the first thing they can think of.
Full of themselves, they saunter back into the room to show brain their work and stare upon the page in dismay - this was not what they had imagined!! Somehow the meaning has got lost in translation.
Brain looks on smugly 'told you. You should've consulted me'
Hand and heart are suitably chastised.

A day so thick
With heat
The air shimmers.
Tongues teasing,
Tantalising images.
Near ****** sounds
Of satisfaction.
Wide eyes filled
With illusive innocence.
You know the picture you paint.
Based on a comment my brother in law made about girls eating ice cream :)
niamh Aug 2015
She glides majestically along
The icy blue lake
With barely a ripple.
Long neck and pristine feathers,
A picture of poise and elegance,
Regal calm and
Breathtaking beauty.
The other birds look on jealously
But fail to see
Her frightened feet
Paddling furiously beneath the surface.
niamh Jun 2015
She gazed upon the pool of life
Not knowing if she could swim.
She dipped her toe in the pool of life,
Stripped off and jumped right in
niamh Jun 2015
He offered her gifts
Of diamonds and gold
Hoping to lure her in.
But she refused
To swap her soul
However merry the sin

I stand under dark skies
Close my eyes
And try to melt into the night
niamh Sep 2015
The people lined the street,
But the face I longed to see
Was absent.
The voices filled the church
But the voice I ached to hear
Was gone.

The coffin lid closed,
The dirt fell,
The people cried,
The truck horns blared
And the choir sang.
But none so deafening
As the silence
Of the empty seat
At a broken table.
niamh Jun 2015
A moment
Saturated in fear.
Heart racing
Like a herd of galloping stallions.
Hairs standing on end
Early warning sign.
Mouth dried out with cotton
Threatening to suffocate me.
A sunlit park
So suddenly full of dark corners
And darker intent.
There you sit
At the foot of a flowerbed
Oblivious to any imagined danger.
Innocence personified
Lost sight of my daughter in the park today (for 2 seconds) & it made me feel sick
niamh Jun 2015
I can never be lonely.
You are always with me
For all those who've lost someone special
niamh May 2015
You are the smile on my face
The spring in my step
The twinkle in my eye
The light in my laughter.

I an the frown on your face
The thorn in your side
The frown upon your brow
The darkness that surrounds us.

There is no me without you,
No you without me.
And for that
I'm eternally sorry
niamh Nov 2014
Can i wrap my arms
Around a ghost?
I'll hug myself
And wish it was you.
Wish you were here
To talk to me,
Love me,
Scold me
And hold me.
God, I miss you.

When your riches
Are measured in shades of green,
the rainbow is never as bright.

When you spend your time
Looking down on others,
You miss the beauty of the stars.

When you count your coffers
Not your blessings
Infinity is but a dream.
niamh May 2015
The day dawned anew
And the birds started singing.
They must not yet
Have heard of your passing.
The sound of children's laughter
Rang through the air,
Chilling me to my bones.
The mundanity of other's lives
Washed over me,
Turning my blood to ice.
I couldn't understand
How their lives ticked on
As normal
After you had gone.
The sun, bright in the sky,
Made a mockery of my grief.
Life goes on?
Lucky for them.
Not for me.

Not for me

I regret the days I have to mind her.
How horrible is that?!
I listen to her as she tells me my Da's horrible
and I grit my teeth.
She asks me my kids names....again
and I bite my lip.
She talks about my granny
and I rein my temper in.
What did she do to deserve tbis?
Fed me, clothed me,
Held me and loved me.
I remember my teen years
And am swollen fat on regret.
Would love to sit on a bench
With her and her alone
As she was ten years ago
And tell her what she meant,
Means and will always mean to me.
I'd tell her now but
She'd only forget.
And I'll go to my grave
Swollen with regret

The memory of yesterdays pain
Brought to focus in their brain
Is their excuse to do it again

Kisses under
The heat of the sun
Igniting fiery
Passion within
That only gets
Hotter
Under the cool
Light of the moon

Ask me how I am.
Really ask.
Deny my lies
And call me on it.
Pick a chisel
And crack my
False exterior.
Reach out your hand
And stop me from falling,
From drowning
In my tears.
Pride is my sin,
-one of many-
So I (privately)
Implore you;
Save me!
I'm the strong one, so feel I have to hide when I'm feeling down. #depressionsucks

Here I lie
Stripped bare of makeup
Here I lie
With morning breath
(If thats not insulting to morning)
Here I lie
In a shapeless nightshirt
Here I lie
With hair like
I've been elctrocuted

And there you lie
Looking at me the way a child looks at sweets

A once-loved trike
Sits alone in a corner of the garden.
A basket full
Of rotting flowers, long forgotten.
Pedals unused
Yielding to rust,
A child, slightly older,
No longer fussed
Caught sight of my daughters first trike languishing in the garden & it hit me that she's too big for it now. Growing up too fast :(

Love lifts you higher
Lets you soar on the wings of eagles
So high
You can reach out and kiss the sun
and pocket the moon
Me, I've always had a fear of flying
But I love the adrenaline
