There is a forest old as hillsides
tall, majestic, dappled shades
fall on ground beneath the silent
gnarled defenders of the glade.

There they stand in ancient splendour
many souls have passed their way
often used as welcome shelter
from the heat of summers day.

Sweet the air they breathe in chorus
our life's breath their lungs provide,
soaking up our daily poison
so that we may live and thrive.

You seas of men intent to clear them
citing progress, peddling greed
tearing roots from precious mooring
laying waste to nature's seed.

**** the beauty of a landscape
displace creatures for your need
rupture fragile ecosystems
scar the earth and watch it bleed.

To you I ask a simple question,
as I see the land bereaved.
What need has man of all this progress
when he can no longer breathe?

I didn't think much
of the way flowers wilted
until I watched you fade slowly out of my life
It was like watching the hands on a clock
Except these hands were knives
And soon enough
Our time had come
And you were cut from my life
I think I understand the sky now
And how it longs to touch the earth
But it can't
Because it would destroy
What it loves the most
Lately my mind has wandered
I'm not so sure of where it goes
But it always comes back
With bits of you
To pour into my thoughts again
I watched a train race by at midnight
My thoughts grabbed at you again
I don't think I've ever held you as tightly
As when I'm only remembering you

you felt like music in my bones
then suddenly you changed keys
i was out of tune
and we forgot the words
it's four o'clock on monday morning
and all that's left
is the memory of your head
on the pillow next to mine
it was here
like this
that we used to listen
to all my favorite records
but I can't now
because when the needle hits the vinyl
i start thinking of you
it's the early hours of the day
when the streaks of morning light
break across the clouds
that I realize
i'm not a morning person
i'm a mourning person

your heart was always out of reach
and mine was always in your hands
but if you listen closely
you can hear my ribs cracking
to the rhythm of your breathing
your grip tightens
my heart screams
you laugh
i beg
you lie
we fight
"do you think I'll cry?" I ask
"you know I'll try" you counter
the sky darkens as you smile
nothing unusual
i think about when I paced my halls
at three in the morning on a sunday
and how it was just like when
you pulled me underwater
and it felt like I was breathing fire
and suddenly you're talking about
when we first met
in that church parking lot
when it started something
that was anything but holy
and I laugh at the irony
it was better than any poetry
i could ever write

Poking and pinching our skin like birds plucking feathers—pulling out their identity. Constantly criticizing, comparing, implementing tyrannical tactics, self-inflicted derision—we are own authoritarians. We are desperately squeezing, writhing, wriggling into the holes and molds constructed by a warped society who views beauty through superficiality. Society who designs and confines and creates its own lines that, if crossed, break the connection, forever shattering our identification with the majority, popularity—the thing we are taught to seek without chance to question the foundation of these seemingly inherent beliefs. And we are pink and tender like birds broiled, presented, stripped bear and embellished with glazes and dressings, carved to perfection. Perfection, in lipstick—on bathroom floors—we stare, at scales, forever our eyes are cast down, on curling toes, shying away from the numbers and standards and “where do I fit?”—on this number line, through this length of time, where I wander and adhere to the brick wall—a mantle piece, a mantle piece. Steadfast and granite for you to pause and stare at me, but the eyes are too many, too cold and stinging, the scorching the shaking the rage and the breaking—the breaking, a sudden release. A fall to the wooden floor with the age spots and the scuff marks, the cracks and the creaks—the beauty in pieces that nip the wrist and ***** the blood, and the air is surprising and clean against the wound that leads to the truth.

Keep searching old soul you might find something you missed,
Like there's more then one way to realize true bliss,
And one common component most people choose to dismiss,
It's that reality spawns from our own consciousness,
When we get to know ourselves we call it spiritual,
The highest of truths we consider imperial,
The circle of life is actually more spherical,
It's something so simple yet nothing short of a miracle,
Imagination's best used when it is positive,
So envision a joyful future for yourself to live,
Keep open eye's life's not always descriptive,
Life is fair so don't be a bit vindictive,
I can say for certain I'm utterly amazed,
How many different ways there are out of this maze,
The path is clear once you have eyes to see through the haze,
Get out of the daze and live In peace the rest of your days.

I'm a nature boy, nature boy,
Breathing in this nature joy,
Listening to this nature noise,
While walking with this nature poise,
Move with the wind when I begin,
Sunrise smile with a sunset grin,
Keep on skating when the ice gets thin,
Stars in my eyes earth In my skin,
Carrying worlds on overhaul,
Ain't broke no sweat not phased at all,
Walk the line while standing tall,
Simply born a natural.

I don't expect you to understand
Why I recoil when
You extend your arms and hands
Why I brace for impact
Within the trajectory of your touch
It is warm,
and I am cold.
It is wind,
and I am stone.
