On being an old soul

It is difficult to be an old soul
Within this world of ours
I’ve only known a few
Who understand its powers

It is easy to see the grand mistakes
Others will take on
It is imperative we let them be
And let them carry on

For it is within each soul’s contract
To decide the path in which their life will take
We must not dissuade them from their destiny
For if we do, it may change their fate.

I'm never more in love with you
than I am in those moments
that you're at your most vulnerable
now waking up is hard to do
and sleeping is impossible too
anything I try I cannot do

I'll never find somebody new
and if I did I wouldn't stay true
cause I'm too broken without you

I try and swallow my pride but I can't seem to chew
cause I won't let go of what's left of you
I wipe my tears but they still continue

I need to love someone new
but the real question is, who?

I'll never let go of you
I'll never let go of you
I'll never let go of what's left of you
just a short something I wrote when I was bored
I once told a friend that life is for sun-
For lying on beaches and writing poems;
For love and beauty and childish fun;
For enjoying our youth before age takes hold.
He replied, "But aren't there days of endless rain?
Of staying home sick; Having your love denied?
Failing luck, terror and beating pain-
Isn't misfortune also a part of life?"
I mused too, then said, "Indeed,
Life is filled with horror and strain,
But joy forever will also be.
Sunlight is always right behind the rain-
So we shout, "C'est la vie!"
That's life!

One day I will buy chocolate milk,
One day I will fly first class,
One day my shirts will be silk,
One day I’ll have a backstage pass.

I am accustomed to saying No
To things that would make me smile,
It’s not that I’m short on dough
But splurging just isn’t my style.

The waiter asks if I’d like a sundae,
Oh my, I couldn’t do that,
Perhaps I’ll have it one day
Because I don’t want to get fat.

This attitude long ago was learned
And strangely it has survived,
Trust me I’m deeply concerned
Why I am so often deprived.

I know I deserve the best,
And shouldn’t make life tougher,
I feel that I’m overly stressed,
And I don’t deserve to suffer.

Starting today I shall vow
To indulge my deepest desires,
To spoil myself I’ll learn how
Before my dull life expires.
I'm selfish
I can't bare to see you in the arms of another
I'm selfish
I crave the taste of your tongue
I'm selfish
I need your arms wrapped around me tight
I'm selfish
I hold you back from what you could become
I'm selfish
I won't let this end
I'm sorry
I'm too selfish to let you move on.
Please don't get me wrong.
I appreciate what you are trying to do,
but you don't send salt and pepper to a starving nation.
I've been dealing with assault of the mind
and inflammation of the soul
in a way no whole-wheat diet or
heartburn medication could ever fix.
I've got all these little tips
and all these little tricks
for how to fold anger up like an origami crane
until it looks somewhat like a punchline.
The flaw in the design of this art
is that no matter how many were made
they couldn't cure Sadako's leukemia.

Perhaps it's an ongoing theme in my work
to shirk all these lies I've been told.
To mold the past into a weapon
to harpoon the future with like a humpback whale.
But I've watched razors sail
across the surface of my skin like a hundred tiny boats
and while I'm making my way in this sink-or-float Earth,
I still have the spirituality
to make a penny feel like more than what it's worth.

I can't make your life having meaning.
I can't give you the feeling you get
on that 999th paper crane,
but I spend my whole life trying to catch
thunder in a wine bottle.
It's just a noise,
and it exists only ringing in the ears
of frightened children
and bringing the tears of overjoyed children
in Africa.
