Scheduled Anxiety
David Mar 2016
My old friend is unsettling
Looking, watching, listening
Waiting for me behind every corner
On every dark road
At the end of every knock
Behind every door.

Why can't I just go to the store?
I need to be armed.
Just in case someone means harm
You never know, you never know
How can you know?
What's waiting behind that door.

I hear you've been worried I'm here again, with more
Looking, watching, listening.
Don't you know I'm your only friend?
I've been here from the start.
You try to ignore my calls,
My breath on your neck

You're playing against a stacked deck.
My friend, don't you see?
I've never left
I'm here, I'm here,
I'm always here.
My hand is on the door.

You aren't a friend; you weren't here before
Looking, watching, listening.
But now you're coiled like a belt
Closing around my neck
Tied to the railing
Hung for all to see.

My friend? You're my worst enemy.
My friend would let me sleep.
My friend would say stop to eat.
My friend would give me space.
You aren't my friend.
I'm not opening that door.

I'll slide in, quiet, like death on the floor,
Looking, watching, listening.
I'll keep your eyes fixed and dilated
So you won't miss a thing
We'll stop that noisy wheezing
So you can appreciate me.

I am your friend
Your only friend that answers your calls
Your only friend that sees your pain
Your only friend.
Your only friend.
Your only friend, opening the door.

My friends are gone, lost in the war.
Looking, watching, listening,
You've kept me company,
Kept me warm.
You've fed my hate
Starved my love.
Kept me inside, never late

For my scheduled anxiety,
Which fills every second.
Every minute.
Every hour.
Every day.
I'm too busy to answer the door.

I'll let myself in, it isn't a chore.
Looking, watching, listening
I'll keep you company
While you work on your schedule.
We don't need to talk;
I already know.

I promise it won't interrupt
Or alter your rigid plans.
Staying inside is hard work
Without an old friend.
Let's get up.
Open this door.

I'd shut you up, if it weren't for your
Looking, watching, listening.
I have a friend made of steel and fire
Willing to have a chat with you
His voice is colossal with thunder
He'll stop your talk.

He'll stop your talk in a heartbeat.
He'll –
I have lost two military friends to suicide, both while I was on active duty. Every day, 22 veterans **** themselves. It's a real issue that deserves attention. I deal with ghosts every day. I know the struggle. If you need help, I'm here.

Dearly Departed Sleep
David Mar 2015
Go back to sleep, my dearest love,
There’s no need to know such worry;
I am watching from high above.
Go back to sleep, my dearest love.
Fret not my lovely lady dove:
Your eyes are getting so blurry.
Go back to sleep, my dearest love;
There’s no need to know such worry.

Death's Fate (A Sonnet)
David Mar 2015
Oh mysterious one, hidden by life
Will you not spare my dear one, my brother?
Choose me, oh Death, instead of another.
Do you not understand I cause this strife?
It is I, your judge, begging for thine knife
I will sign his contract. My name, no other
Will know you as I do – my life, smothered
In the place of his, I pick up death’s fife.

Do not fret; your day comes after his time
Has ended; naught you can do now but wait
For the Scythe to find thine own mortal thread.
Until said severance ends this sad rhyme,
Do not think about the sisters three: Fate.
Live without your brother; he rests his head.
David Mar 2015
To arms! To arms! The battle calls
Stand up brave and loud in the light;
Rise to Valhalla at the fall.

Raise your arms, rush to the brawl,
Set your jaw firm for the fight.
To arms! To arms! The battle calls

Fade amidst the shouts of all
Young and old, try as they might
Rise to Valhalla at the fall.

Collapsing star, fiery thrall
Of destruction, burning bright –
To arms! To arms! The battle calls

Last words in the ****** hall;
Doing what he thought was right.
Rise to Valhalla at the fall.

You, my son, no more in life’s drawl
Fell from that brave black hallowed height:
To arms! To arms! The battle calls –
Rise to Valhalla at the fall.

Tap-tap-tap
David May 2013
You're in the back of my head
Tap-tap-tap-tapping
Telling me to get out of bed
And I can't figure it out
Because as soon as I leave this bed
You're gone
You aren't underneath any cork
Or in any story
Or any witty retort
Tap-tap-tap
My feet on the street
The thud of my heart
Whatever ever wherever never
Tap-tap-tap
My head is splitting apart
You're in the back of my mind
Telling me, begging me to get out of bed
But if I leave here,
If I go away to ever after,
You're no more than dead

Tidal Wave
David Apr 2013
Being swept away in a tidal wave of thought
I've been thinking about a time
When rings were bought,
I love you's were said

And you're telling me he doesn't hold you like I did
Doesn't dry your tears
Doesn't care about your hopes or fears
I'm sorry is all I ever hear

I want to go back to that life
The one where you were almost my wife
This tidal wave of thought won't let me forget
That I can't let you back in

Sister
David Apr 2013
You do it to yourself girl
It's nobody else
Those bridges you burn
They were your matches
There's nobody left to catch us
Because those paths are gone
You drink and deal,
Mud and wheel
You do it to yourself girl
It's nobody else
You wonder why nobody is behind you
But you see right past me
I'm here and always have been
Not just now, not just back then
No matter what you do or where you go
I'll always be here for you

Contract Kill
David Feb 2013
Oh Death,
Won't you spare my brother
Choose me, choose another
Oh Death, just please
Take me
I'll sign his contract,
Fight his wars
Burn the same bridges
Open the same doors
Oh Death,
Won't you spare my sister
I can't stand to watch her wither
I picked up that rifle
To take her place
Now, it's just a race
Take me, spare the girl I love
I'll fight, I'll die
So long as you let them go

Red Hair
David Feb 2013
It's been one of those nights
When nothing else seems to matter
I miss you darlin',
And I'm mad as a hatter
I remember holding you tight
In a shower
Smelling your hair
I can't help but think of you lying there
You asked me:
"Baby, will you love me forever?"
And I told you I would, you'd never
Have to worry about me
Not being around
'Cause you're the only one I can see
You asked me:
"Baby, will you love me forever?"
And I replied
I've never even had to try
Even though you love someone else now
Ain't no way, no how
That I'll ever be able to forget
The way you looked with your red hair,
Just lying there
Waiting for me to make a move
To come in close and kiss you
Make you tingle and sigh
Why oh why
Aren't you lying here?

Old Man
David Feb 2013
Once upon a time
Long, long ago
An old man taught me a word
Honor
And he ain't here no longer
But those words he said...
Boy, you be a good man
And I want you to sit here
And understand
Take care of your family,
Love your woman
Be a good, God fearin' man
Above all,
Don't you forget to stand
On your own two feet
There ain't nothin' wrong
With feeling tired and beat
But I want you to sit here
And understand
There ain't nothin' better
Than being a good, old-fashioned man
Use your hands
Live a life that makes them rough;
One day you'll know
You're made of the right stuff
He left me while I was away
And I know I'll never get one more day
To show him I'm a good man
But that word, that long forgotten honor
Is a part of who I am,
And I won't live without it any longer
So sit here boy, and let me tell you
Protect your family, love your woman
You can't go wrong
With those rough hewn hands
As long as you're a good, honest, just
Honorable man

Full Throttle
David Jan 2013
The silence is deafening
Because all I can hear is your laugh
And I see your fiery hair
Absolutely everywhere
I googled you today
And it made my heart beat faster
I knew I wouldn't see you,
But I know I'm the master
Of my own actions,
Because often I don't think
The silence is deafening,
And I think I'll have another drink
There aren't any answers
At the bottom of this bottle
I'm not looking,
Just going full throttle
Until I hit oblivion
The one place you aren't
And I figure if I can't hear you there,
Then it's a good place to start

Amber Ember
David Jan 2013
That amber ember
Makes me want to stay in this room,
But I have to go, because it's
The smell of your perfume
A whisper through the trees,
A sigh from my bruised
And ****** please.
The holes in my shoes
Are from miles of trying to get away
From you.
But you're just a long-distance ghost,
The one, my only, the woman I loved most.

On One Knee
David Jan 2013
He doesn't see you
The way I see you
If you only knew
If you could just remember
That one November
When I got down on my knee
And said
Oh I said
Won't you marry me please
And you looked at me
In a way I never thought possible
And shouted yes!
Yes!
I'll marry you now
Here we are down the road
And I see you with him
And I ask myself
If I'd even want to try again
Because darlin, I miss you
As hard as it is to admit
I threw in the towel
And told you that I quit.
