I am something you all know well
Some of you can’t function with me
and some of you can’t focus without me

I am a small, timid thing
Easily spooked, should you make a sound
and always flitting from place to place

I am the moment when realization sinks in
When the doors stop slamming
and the heat fueling your anger no longer burns

I am the moment when fresh snow blankets the ground
When the sun shines, but never warms
and birdsong is lost to the early morning breeze

I am the moment when you’re alone in bed
When the world around you sleeps
and you’re too old for the shadows to be scary

I am something that’s never heard, never seen, and never felt
simply experienced
I am silence

My first published poem!
Tyra Hunter Oct 2019
I address this letter to you, in part
to speak of a new time in my life.
For a dashing beau has stolen my heart -
your youngest is set to become a wife!
His touch is cold as a December day,
but his heart’s warm as the high summer sun.
He doesn’t seem the type to go and stray,
just don’t expect grandbabes - he ain’t much fun!
He’s a striking gentleman, famous too,
and he pens the most beautiful of works!
So, with this, my life shall begin anew.
Hello city folk, goodbye Georgia berks!
If y’all plan to meet, you’re plum outta luck,
alas, my dear Edgar is dead as ****.

I pose a petition
to change the condition
where "birthday" gets its name
Given this tradition
in its opposition
is, in short, a false claim
Since all through fruition
a lowly mortician
waits patiently to tame
your sole apparition
as you near transition
to the end of the game

Challenge: Theme (Birthday, Death)
Tyra Hunter Oct 2019
He stands on a cliff called love
Overlooking the abyss
I call out behind him
He’s ready.

He backtracks along the rocky surface
My face turns dark
The earth beneath him gives way
He’s falling.

He reaches out
Clawing at the darkness
My hands grab his
He’s safe.

I stand on a cliff called love
Overlooking the abyss
He calls out behind me
I’m ready.

I backtrack along the rocky surface
His face turns dark
The earth beneath me gives way
I’m falling.

I reach out
Clawing at the darkness
The abyss swallows me
I’m alone.
