If there’s one thing that unifies you and me, it’s heartbreak
If you’ve never experienced it to the fullest, you’ve seen it somewhere.
On your favorite tv shows, that song on the radio, on the girl’s face at the bar
On your lover’s face when you walk out the door the last time

And when you do feel it for the first time, you’ll want to be alone but please don’t be alone
You’ll want to bottle it up but
that’s a breakdown at work waiting to happen
That’s crying to his friends
That’s calling him after 1am, knowing he isn’t asleep yet
That’s driving by his apartment and holding your breath
That’s feeling like your hometown isn’t yours anymore, it’s a place you used to be with him

It’s feeling like the seasons are taunting you of when you were in love
The first fall of snow is the feeling of his hug
The lighting of the tree reminds you of warm cups of coffee on the couch
You dread New Year’s Eve because only 365 days ago, you danced with him in the street as the clock struck midnight
It’s knowing you will dance alone this year

You don’t look at your body the same way. You know how he saw it and you don’t see the beauty he did anymore
Your face doesn’t look like yours, it’s the one he used to hold in his hands
like a sparking jewel
He could marvel forever
I know he’s the first thing you think of when you wake up alone
And he wakes up next to her

Something that used to feel so concrete has been pummeled to dust
and now you’re left to scatter the ashes
So you drive by, the commons, the bbq joint, the movie theater, the lighthouse, the coffee shops, the all night diners, the book shops, the arcades, the antique stores, all the places you’ve made memories together
But please toss your heartache out the driver’s side window as you pass his apartment
because now it’s the only thing you two have in common

I am both flames and snowflakes.

I'll explode into sparks then I'll calm down like the falling snow.

I will challenge your comfort zone, but I'll fight to stay in mine.

I will feel fire in my heart when I am passionate or angry,

I will feel a blizzard when I am curious or afraid.

I will always rise, even if I fall.

I will roar louder than the mighty lion or slither quieter than the sly snake.

I will forgive without thought, or I will wear revenge with grace.

I will become completely attached to you, or leave without thought.

I will tear my barriers apart or build garden gates.

I will be bold, or I will never speak.

I will authentically be myself, or what I need to become.

I am simple, I depend on you.
We're all constructed within a spectrum of opposites. Stay out of the extremes, explore the black and white, but do not remain in them. Know yourself and your limits, but learn them, you are your greatest teacher. Either build you up, or become your destruction.

“I’m not hungry,” becomes an anthem
For a nation of starving citizens.
They’re not at war, they’re not lacking in supplies,
They only seek to attain the slim silhouette of a pen

Here’s to the days we spent craving that cake
Here’s to the months we were counting our bites
Raise a glass to that tiny mistake
Of eating one peanut on that one flight.

A mistake like that twists your stomach into knots
You feel your body wake itself up
Your tastebuds start tingling as if they forgot
Any other flavor than your water cup

she leans against the tree
Wondering what life would be like
If her two became a three
Yet she rode up the hill with one bike

She wants someone to look at her
So she gouges out her eyes
She wants someone to listen to her
So she tears off an ear with her ties
She wants someone to dance with
So she splits her foot in two
She wants someone to laugh with
So she breaks off a rib to make do

She wants someone to sing to her
So she grips the voice in her throat
she wants someone to kiss her
And she tears the lips with the throat

She creates her own someone
And she loves him to pieces
But the one thing she forgot to give him
Was a piece of her heart

I used to drawing these big yellow circles.
They would always make me happy.
Every time I did, I expected miracles
And I know that that seems sappy.
But there was just something about it
That forced my mouth to smile
I wouldn’t even have to think about it
At least that lasted for a little while.
Things have changed now that I’m older
I don’t have time to look at colors
Now, instead of thinking they look bolder
They’ve faded like light through closed shutters
Is it just that time has worn me down
Or is it just the truth in life
That an innocent smile turns to a frown
And a happy yellow circle into strife
