LIGHTS

I feel like I'm losing you too

to all these lights, to people new

to souls brighter than mine;

to memories new.

Sophia
She was a thrifted sweater and denim and jersey knit sheets
Pizza breath and red wine and toothpaste
Alabaster skin and knotted hair and freckled shoulders
A tangible dream and my favorite good morning
She agreed to let me kiss her and I agreed to let her slip my shirt over my head before she became
Blood and tears
"I trusted you" and "I’m sorry"
Midnight poems and a drunk "I need you"
I’m afraid I loved you like the way I wrote
I LIKE TO SAY YOUR NAME

I like to say
your name

when you're
not here

turn you
into sound

conjure you out of
thin air

so that you appear
before me

dressed in sound
only

memory sketching in
the rest of you

as if sound
was just an outline

and love
colours you in

adding the voice last
so I can hear you say.

"Hello you..!"
and there you are

as present
as present

can be.

I like to say
your name

when you're
not there.

Winter
After the darkness
a new day in light,
love is rejected
like flesh on unfamiliar bone,
the heart is
neither open nor closed,
life in between
withers
and falls like autumn leaves

Follow the sky
Through shades of blue
It's time to cry
It's time to renew
Journey
On
Hidden night
Vibrant dawn
Fading
Perhaps
Never gone
Always

I tell the moon stories of you.
I wonder if she tells you about me too.
Every little move, every soft step, every breath I take,
I am reminded of him; I am reminded that he was here.
I savor the subtle soreness, the secret that only we know
—the remnants of pleasure that reside there.
They remind me that I am his, and his alone.
This poem was written in 2020.

Because of you I hurt another
Who could have been my first true lover
His eyes spoke profoundly what his lips couldn't utter.
