"aclu" poems
Oh, the sensation, the media frenzy,
The spotlight, the fame, the hullabaloo,
When anti-evolution laws
Were challenged by the ACLU!
The year: 1925.
The place: Dayton, Tennessee.
To say it was an extravaganza
Wouldn't be hyperbole.
For many people it was hard
To find a way to reconcile
Biblical accounts with science,
So science found itself on trial.
A young teacher, John T. Scopes,
Was willing to face prosecution
For breaking a Tennessee law for having
Given a lesson on evolution.
The "Monkey Trial" it was called.
The challenge meant swimming upstream
For the feisty lawyer Clarence Darrow,
Who helped to lead the defense team.
A prosecutor was William Jennings
Bryan, who with no apology
Loved to stir up outrage against
Evolutionary biology.
Defendant Scopes quickly found
It wouldn't take long for him to know
What it was like to have a part
In a multimedia reality show.
The courthouse received a make-over:
Platforms for newsreel cameras were built;
Extra spectator seats were added.
They were playing the trial to the hilt.
Concession stands sold food and drinks;
Toy monkeys were on display;
A chimp was dressed in a suit and fedora;
The clergy also joined the fray.
The media and the public loved it!
The country watched the trial progress.
What would win: science or scripture?
The answer was probably easy to guess.
After an eight-day trial, the jury
Deliberated. Nine minutes later
They had their verdict: guilty! How
Could someone question THEIR creator?
Scopes had actually never given
The lesson. That's what he later said.
Strangely, five days after the trial,
Williams Jennings Bryan dropped dead.
Laws later changed, but even during
Current times, some people feel
That stories from the Bible should be
In science textbooks. Now THAT'S surreal!

...and then PETA showed up and wanted to know whether there were sufficient air holes for the lamb to breathe and how the separating of the lamb from its mom went and whether or not the box was organic and free of all chemicals known to cause allergic reactions among lambkind.
The prince pulled out his legally concealed pistol and shot the PETA representative.
The ACLU, not arguing with the prince's right to carry the legally concealed weapon, but objecting to his failure to alert the PETA representative before shooting him, offered to take on the case of PETA v Prince for free, as long as PETA would agree not to protest the Jack In The Box deliveries that would be a thrice daily occurrence while the ACLU readied itself for trial.
The prince, misunderstanding ACLU's motivation and fearing the eventual loss of his right to legally concealed weapons, looked a little harder and deeper at the box and, voila, miracle of miracles, began to see apocalyptic scibblings regarding the fast-approaching war of Armageddon and the importance of a "well-armed militia" in the winning of that unavoidable conflict.
Recognizing the chance to shore up the faithful -- and put to shame the rest -- the Christian Coalition adopted the prince's message and gave it more teeth. They stoked the flames of hellfire, added more levels to the depths of hades, and notched up the sufferings to those found guilty by their Lord, the Good Shepherd.
The ACLU responded, adding the Christian Coalition to the complaint.
The battle lines were drawn. The ACLU and PETA stood on one side and the Christian -Coalition and the NRA stood on the other.
People argued and screamed and fought and condemned.
Then, a little boy of five, wiser than his years and saddened by the preemption of his favorite cartoons in favor of live coverage of the proceedings noticed something nobody else had. Neither side any longer had a picture of the lamb. So he drew his own.

There was dancing at the funeral;
wild, wind-swept and whirling.
A testament to a life spent unfurling sails and fighting for a better future.
"She was a doctor, your mama" as if I didn't know. "One of the first to say,
'Man, stop calling me a girl,
I'm a professional
and hell, I'll swear like one too.'"
She started her family in this city,
and made every borough within arms reach.
Patients were closer than cousins,
and my aunts spent less time here than the women's wing of the ACLU.
Black is not a way to mourn, but to warn.
A message shouting "Stand clear, this soul is moving on."
Best prepare afterlife, cause this one made a difference here,
and she'll sure-as-shit start something over there.

Forget the EPA
That’s so yesterday
In time we’ll have to pay
But who cares anyway
They used to work for you and me
But not anymore don’t cha see
We have a President
Who’s hell-bent and won’t repent
Forget the CDC
Looking out for you and me
Cos they are in a rut
With their budget cut
There’s little they can do
To protect me and you
They can’t detect the latest flu
Like they used to do
Forget the DOJ
Who won’t point the way
Towards an enlightened government
Civil rights have all been spent
Now the ACLU’s out of the loop
And the fox oversees the chicken coop
They’ve been set up to fail
And progess is off the rail
Are you listening to me
What about the CPB
There’s no protection anymore
Like we used to have before
If we get ripped off then so what
Consumer protection we haven’t got
And that’s not what will make us great
Despite the slogan he may state

these things.
these things you do
on the 4th of July
at an age
without thought...
things happen in front of
Madam Maria's...
(things happen
on the boardwalk
in Asbury Park...
...the police officer,
with a glee in his eye said
he was going to put
me in the cell with
Big Mortimor,
the happy tone in his voice
(and it worked.)
I was ******** myself,
serial killer
hit man for the mafia,
****** roommate...???
this isn't about me,
what brought me here
to the city yard ...
as it turns out,
it was Reverend Mortimer
from Our Lady of the Perpetual Motion.
the issue it seems was
the sisters.
the Sisters of Perpetual Motion,
for a $20 donation and up
a sister will love you.
more later, about the reverend, but back
to what brought me here
to a cell in the city yard
of Asbury Park.
as I reflect on what brought here
(vaguely)
to the city yard of Asbury Park
ah, fight.?
I had said to her,
your boyfriend,
"he's only over compensating
for his receeding hair line
and feelings of inadequacy,
ah, ah, a fight went down, I believe.
(I didn't know I had hit
the mayor.)
what more can I say
about my stay,
in the City of Asbury Park ?
the sisters???
that things happen
and you end up
in a cell
in the city yard
in Asbury Park
with a room without no view...
...oh, back to Reverend Mortimer. apparently
the. U.S Constitution,
NAACP, ACLU.
it was a religious issue. AND SO, FREE
the Reverend Mortimer threw a big party
with the Sisters of Our Lady
of Perpetual Motion!!!

Ruthie Ginsburg is gone, and we’re glad.
Trump has found her replacement to add.
Let us look on and cheer!
The appointment is here
And progressives now drive themselves mad.
From the ACLU to the Court,
Ruth promoted the right to abort.
You may claim she was God’s
but she seemed, by all odds
more a midwife of murderous tort.
Say hello. Ginsburg’s honor is spent.
The new judge now begins her ascent .
Ruthie’s star has gone dead.
A black robe . . . or a red?
(Only Jesus can say where she went.)
Postscript:
Amy’s IN ! (and appointed to judge.)
Rabid Liberal: curse not, nor begrudge.
Are you feeling resigned?
Your own team failed to find
Any dirt; not a stain nor a smudge.
