I.

Hear the sledges with the bells—
Silver bells!
What a world of merriment their melody foretells!
How they ******, ******, ******,
In their icy air of night!
While the stars, that oversprinkle
All the heavens, seem to twinkle
With a crystalline delight;
Keeping time, time, time,
In a sort of Runic rhyme,
To the tintinnabulation that so musically wells
From the bells, bells, bells, bells,
Bells, bells, bells—
From the jingling and the tinkling of the bells.

II.

Hear the mellow wedding bells,
Golden bells!
What a world of happiness their harmony foretells!
Through the balmy air of night
How they ring out their delight!
From the molten golden-notes,
And all in tune,
What a liquid ditty floats
To the turtle-dove that listens, while she gloats
On the moon!
Oh, from out the sounding cells,
What a gush of euphony voluminously wells!
How it swells!
How it dwells
On the future! how it tells
Of the rapture that impels
To the swinging and the ringing
Of the bells, bells, bells,
Of the bells, bells, bells, bells,
Bells, bells, bells—
To the rhyming and the chiming of the bells!

III.

Hear the loud alarum bells—
Brazen bells!
What a tale of terror now their turbulency tells!
In the startled ear of night
How they scream out their affright!
Too much horrified to speak,
They can only shriek, shriek,
Out of tune,
In a clamorous appealing to the mercy of the fire,
In a mad expostulation with the deaf and frantic fire
Leaping higher, higher, higher,
With a desperate desire,
And a resolute endeavor
Now—now to sit or never,
By the side of the pale-faced moon.
Oh, the bells, bells, bells!
What a tale their terror tells
Of Despair!
How they clang, and clash, and roar!
What a horror they outpour
On the ***** of the palpitating air!
Yet the ear it fully knows,
By the twanging,
And the clanging,
How the danger ebbs and flows;
Yet the ear distinctly tells,
In the jangling,
And the wrangling,
How the danger sinks and swells,
By the sinking or the swelling in the anger of the bells—
Of the bells—
Of the bells, bells, bells, bells,
Bells, bells, bells—
In the clamor and the clangor of the bells!

IV.

Hear the tolling of the bells—
Iron bells!
What a world of solemn thought their monody compels!
In the silence of the night,
How we shiver with affright
At the melancholy menace of their tone!
For every sound that floats
From the rust within their throats
   Is a groan.
And the people—ah, the people—
They that dwell up in the steeple.
    All alone,
And who toiling, toiling, toiling,
  In that muffled monotone,
Feel a glory in so rolling
On the human heart a stone—
They are neither man nor woman—
They are neither brute nor human—
    They are Ghouls:
And their king it is who tolls;
And he rolls, rolls, rolls,
         Rolls
A paean from the bells!
And his merry ***** swells
With the paean of the bells!
And he dances, and he yells;
Keeping time, time, time,
In a sort of Runic rhyme,
To the paean of the bells—
    Of the bells:
Keeping time, time, time,
In a sort of Runic rhyme,
To the throbbing of the bells—
Of the bells, bells, bells—
  To the sobbing of the bells;
Keeping time, time, time,
  As he knells, knells, knells,
In a happy Runic rhyme,
To the rolling of the bells—
Of the bells, bells, bells—
To the tolling of the bells,
Of the bells, bells, bells, bells,
  Bells, bells, bells—
To the moaning and the groaning of the bells.
Bells, bells, bells,
I hear mellow bells
Merrier than sea bellows,
Bells, bells, bells,
So, sang a cloud grandly dressed in white.

Bells, bells, bells,
Who canst tell the mellow bells
Merrier than birds of the Vales?
Bells, bells, bells,
Upon my back novelty shores he'll sight.

Bells, bells, bells,
I think I know the bells,
I think I know the bells,
Bells, bells, bells,
So, cheerfully didst reply many a Kite.

For Christmas is here,
For Christmas is near,
Just around the corner
Heralding so fresh a year,
For as fades the sun this year's to avaunt.

Bells, bells, bells,
I think I know the bells,
I think I know the bells,
Bells, bells, bells,
They're but jingo bells—bells of delight.

O, dear Kites hold on tight
Whilst we set for our flight.
So, upon the back of the cloud,
There proudly didst shroud
Many a kite, I say, many a Kite,
And away from human sight
They didst glide and glide,
Yonder a dewy rainbow-like glade,
Yonder silvery whispering rills,
Yonder verdant charming hills,
Yonder so halcyon a limpid indigo sea,
Yonder a realm of many a golden tree,
Yonder a realm of lofty towers,
Where there are opalescent flowers
Well watered by eternal nectar streams
Serpentining by in the land of dreams,
Yonder a rose-scented ineffable clime,
Yonder beyond restrictions of time
Whilst whispering, bells, bells, bells,
To the mellifluous whispers of the bells.

The Bells
E Jun 2013
I should be able to see
Golden gates of the divine
The only place that is free
Of things troubled and benign

Trapped tunnels, nothing to find
Escape to the other side
Voices trailing from behind
It's harder to live than die

Chorus:
The bells, the bells
The bells chime
The bells, the bells
Toll out of time
Bronze and bold
A hollow ring
Eyes close and
The angels sing

I should be able to feel
No need to find salvation
Lord, say it is surreal to
Reach final destination

Turned tunnels with paths that wind
God won't say a reason why
Living dead and I don't mind
No difference if I die

Chorus:
The bells, the bells
The bells chime
The bells, the bells
Toll out of time
Bronze and bold
A hollow ring
Eyes close and
The angels sing

Dead end, the black is bright
Stone wall, I can see it now
Damp ground, blinding light
Fade away, I don't know how

Chorus:
The bells, the bells
The bells chime
The bells, the bells
Toll out of time
Bronze and bold
A hollow ring
Eyes close and
The angels sing

Fade away, I don't know how (x4)

Oh, what will you give us?
say the sad bells of U.S.

Indeed! You are smitten!
Say the bells of Great Brittan

It is such a pity!
Weep the weak bells of Italy

You did sing, you did dance,
say the smug bells of France

Now, where is your harmony?
Say the cold bells of Germany

It's a terrible plan!
Say the bells of Japan

Oh, don't be a whiner,
Say the red bells of China

Yes, your demise we ushered,
Say the hard bells of Russia

We will use violence
say the black bells of ISIS.

There can be no more borders
Said the New World Order

I will steal your last breath
Said the grey bells of death

We will treat you well
lied the hot bells of hell...

And, what will you give us?
Say the sad bells of U.S.

The bells of hell verse co-written
by Ian Woods... Thanks Ian!

Based upon the song
"The Bells of Rhymney"
sung by Pete Seeger, The Byrds and
Judy Collins on YouTube.

It is about a great coal mining disaster
and failure of the 1926 strike that resulted
from this tragedy.

Laughter sings through the air in the first day of fall
Feet parade the crackles that the trees have left
I'm singing in the rain
Dancing, skipping, jumping, in a sea of leaves
And suddenly the sky breaks.
Bells the bells bells bells bells
Chiming, rhyming, to the beat in my head.
My ears bleed, and the sound is beyond that is dread.
this was the best one i have ever written. enjoy but do not cry

Do you hear bells?
Your words escaped with a gentle urgency.
Our bodies glistening in the soft light.
I heard no bells.
I stopped and strained to hear anything over my quickened breath.
Over the roar of our passion burning hot,
I tried so hard to hear the bells over the battle drum that was my heart.
Boom boom boom.
But no bells.
I try again and strain my ears, struggling to hear the faintest ring.
Yet No bells.
I hear bells! you say with a passionate excitment.
I look up into you face.
My mind and body lost in a fog.
I feel myself begin to smile.
I see the way you glow.
As a smile slowly appears upon your face,
As my hand runs absently across your skin ,
I try again to hear the bells,
But no bells.
That night as I lay in bed alone,
Sleepless, My thoughts stuck on you
Your taste, your touch, the soft caress of your voice,
No bells.
I think back to the way you looked when you first asked "do you hear bells?"
The way you looked so excited, so awe struck, so beautiful,
That thought, that memory, hanging on as my eyes finally start to close.
And As I fall into a gentle sleep
I realize I can hear the bells.
A Revised Edition
From The Works of the Late Edgar Allan Poe, vol. II, 1850

In the icy air where the stars do sprinkle bright
keeping time, keeping time
with the jingling bells of night
it is there I lay my heart, my lonely heart

Hear the mellow wedding bells
the golden bells of happiness, ringing to foretell
Through the balmy air of night how they ring with such delight
from the molten-golden notes, the liquid ditty floats

A gush of euphony within her dwells
for a future that foretells of the rapture that impels
from the swinging and the ringing of the bells,
to the rhyming and the chiming of the bells!

Later how they clang and clash and roar in the throbbing air
hear the tolling of the bells, the bells, the bells
in a world of solemn thought, their monody compels
in the silence of the night she shivers with affright

And the lover oh the lover, dwelling deep inside the steeple
all alone,.. tolling, tolling, in that muffled monotone
turns her heart to solid stone, as she listens to the bells
the bells, the bells, the bells...

as we sing are christmas songs.
3x repeat a song
Ring them bells
Let the people know
That Christ was born today
Ring them bells
Let the people know
That today is Christmas Day

Hook up the horses
Hook up the sleigh
Head off to church
No time to play

God gave his son
As a saviour of man
Believe what you will
or Believe what you can

Ring them bells
Let the people know
That Christ was born today
Ring them bells
Let the people know
That today is Christmas Day

Three Kings did travel
From the east by a star
It was a sign from on high
That led them so far

He was only a baby
And his story is told
With gifts of Frankincense
Myrrh and some gold

Ring them bells
Let the people know
That Christ was born today
Ring them bells
Let the people know
That today is Christmas Day

He didn't live long
Only made thirty three
But his lessons still thrive
Inside you and me

We celebrate Christmas
not the holiday season
For the angels fore told
His life is the reason

Ring them bells
Let the people know
That Christ was born today
Ring them bells
Let the people know
That today is Christmas Day

So, hook up the horses
and hook up the sleigh
Get them bells ringing
Today's Christmas Day
Kyle Kulseth May 2013
Gertrude, Stradbrook, River and Roslyn,
off of McMillan, my thoughts froze on Osborne
A drive through the Village on slippery streets
Bought records, drained pints
                        swallowed down summer nights
Back home in Wyoming--think I'll be fine
'til some night, filled to gills
trip through streets with a stranger
                          and sing "One Great City"
                          through swollen closed throat

And I remember...

Confusion Corner, commuting through cold streets
Watched you drive as the daylight died
I narrow my Focus,
                                     you eased into traffic
The Assiniboine ran and was watched by Riel

January.
Johnson's Terminal.
London Fogs.
Took Yellow Dogs for long walks
and Exchanged now for then. Snapped pictures, again and again.

Snow up to my hips
Spent a night at St. Boniface
We cased a cathedral, your friends seemed to like me.

Lines ran from reserves, over oceans and borders.
Your hair ran down shoulders, brown waves for a blanket.

Winterpeg, Manitscoldout
Portage & Main
Shivering, smiling
at a Tavern Uniting with friends,
'til we took the King's Head...
We took the King's Head.
Long live the king.

January.
Magic Thailand.
Curry soup, curried thoughts thawing,
melting, falling from pickled brains,
                      through lips chapping

I donned my Tuxedo, chopped down Seven Oaks...
Your Catholic heart spoke
     reached out for St. James.
St. Vital answered behind Fort Garry's walls...

Our hearts, they were neighbourhoods
And the streets were all salt.

Blistered paint on your blue '02 Focus

To the City Center of the continent's middle
Form a Perimeter
Frame a city
Bullseye, center, a Gold gilded Boy
he leans into sky, as they sing, as I hear.
The road North Ended--November, it was.
I think, one year prior, in Robin's Donuts
front doors swayed, on hinges that sighed metallic,
I caught your eyes--organic, unplanned--
               through fog frosting lenses
Caught them, held on
               Held your deep brown
               In my gunmetal blue

Seasons will chase--haste to follow more seasons
White streaks to green
and the Red River runs.
When they score at the ballpark,
"Go Goldeyes!" the cheer sounds
Cheer. Cheer!
The Guess Who still ****,
but the Jets completed their round trip
"Go, Jets, go!" so the cheer goes.
"Cheers!" Cheers like bells.
             Bells
           Pealing
Peeling like your sunburnt back
            Bells
          Ringing
           Striking
Bells singing long
Bells sounding loudly from Grace Bible Church
baptizing Baltimore as it kisses Osborne

Bells ringing. Round sounds.
Round rings for fingertips touching
Bells
Round sounds that hang on my neck
and sing me to sleep every night--
remind me how badly you wanted those bells
                I denied you.

They sing "Left and Leaving"
             and show me old scars
they ring and peal and strike
                         and sing
                         unending.

I remember March of 2008
Dropping my toque in the mud-and-slush street
            We took Pembina Highway
              Ate Vietnamese.

I remember...

Confusion Corner,
Commuting through cold streets,
Watching you drive as the daylight died
In your blue '02 Focus
Ease us back into traffic,
The Assiniboine River.
And Louis Riel.

So tell me...

Comment-allez vous, ce soir?
Je ne suis pas comme ci, comme ça.

— The End —
