Some nights I shade
my eyes
from dark dreams
like a broken hawk's wing
stuck in the hot tar
of a back country road
when sleep seems
like a long ways to go
in a bad war
and desire and desire
and desire like a fire
in my bones
won't leave me alone.

Time is a witness
to the mark of the moth
in my hair, and I swear
the nights are getting longer

I keep putting it off
hoping I would discover
a star no one knew was there

and I can only wonder why
the bluebirds die
on the power lines singing

if god had a heart
he'd take me instead
and put a thirty ought six
straight through my chest

just for believing
that somewhere there's a nest
with my name on it.

Jawad
Not Iraqi, nor Irani
With ancestors, Pakistani
And some fine roots
From India
But my main roots
Arabia
Did spent some time
In Austria
And later on
In Syria
Now heartbroken
And writing poems
In language of
Britannia
I'm heartbroken
Cause I lost you
Your heart is where
I'm calling home
Since its the place
Of which I can
Honestly say
I'm coming from.
Officially, I am an Iraqi born in Iran, but sometimes I really have to think hard about where I am really from :-). If we look closer however, all people are international , and the only place we can call home is the heart in which we find love.
bird in darkness, sings at night
a testament. a sigh.
she warbles for the coming light
but never wants to fly
for she fears a tre'chorus flight
in darkness as it lies
cruel, its haunches pull in tight
it homes in on her cries
yet she evades its clutch's might,
so no matter how it tries
God has given second sight
and darkness

always

DIES

without the ambient light from
our cities or electrical lights
even candles or fire
wouldn't WE fear the dark?

I wrote this after sitting
out on my front porch listening
with great appreciation
to a nightbird
thoughts filling my head
set off the panic alarm
warning, warning. stop.

Darling, you were the captor of my heart
and I swear I loved something more than
my freedom for the first time.

If I should die,
And you should live—
And time should gurgle on—
And morn should beam—
And noon should burn—
As it has usual done—
If Birds should build as early
And Bees as bustling go—
One might depart at option
From enterprise below!
’Tis sweet to know that stocks will stand
When we with Daisies lie—
That Commerce will continue—
And Trades as briskly fly—
It makes the parting tranquil
And keeps the soul serene—
That gentlemen so sprightly
Conduct the pleasing scene!

Sometimes at night

asleep by the firelight

I dream about them

how they died

some are singing

and others saying what

they no longer see

walking fencelines

limping as if in pain

some of them handsome

and some mysterious

silent but not

for long they tell you

men scarcely know

how beautiful fire is

and old stories

they can't remember

unless you can

still look them in the eye.
