Traveler
He never says goodbye
To the dead
He simply
Doesn't know how
They all think
He doesn't care
But he died a long time ago
And they were never there...

Only one little
               silly tiny
                       movement
can create ripples
of effects
and tonight
as I reached for the
garlic or salt
or whatever
the hell it was---
something harsh was set
I brushed your shoulder
or was too much in your space
somehow jolting your ego
from its permanent, fragile place
            You chose to take that
and make a fight
from dust
and this in turn led
to splitting hearts
              spitting corrupted trust
passive aggressive silt
swept out
from under rugs
emotional bluntness of punches
instead of the realness of hugs
Where have we reached
what have we done
All I know
is my heart's on
        the run
These little ***** triggers
       can open
Pandora's sick, dark box
unlocking old resentments
from behind rusty locks
"You will never be forgiven"
are words
that destroy
they suffocate and choke
turn real gold to alloy
and Man, this gold is melting down
running in streams
painting false this town
in shades of hurt
in shades of pain
just lay me down
in this thick desert sun
to bear this unbearable
                   splintered strain
Let me pour this liquid burden
into the salt of the cracks
of the earth
Let me be replenished
with crystal water coolness
as I, head held up in tears,
                           remember
                                    my golden worth

Into You**

oh, you can go
or you can stay
and I’ll walk with you
until you fade
into that strange place you go
where oblivion eats you so
you are known only to shadow
and a crying
midnight blue;
where I long to follow
and fade along with you.
“fade into you.”

a hot coal rolled out the fire
and we were eating cakes
a squatter moved in next door
I confided I was no good at math
scooped up the rogue coal
invited the lonely squatter for tea
could not count how many cakes I ate
and realised the squatter was me.

We speak to each other in graceful touches,

left aching and throbbing with hearts out of sync.

And then we fail to speak at all, the throbbing stops

but the ache doesn’t.

We take photos together when we feel most alive.

And then we take photos to preserve what’s left, and

snap, snap before we see the stop sign.

We call, back and forth,

like flightless birds on opposite branches, needing each other’s wings.

And then we shirk, avoid,

run and flee at the slightest word in acres of blank space.

We cling like trembling flowers,

blown to brush together and meet petal by petal.

And then our slender stems snap, both falling to the earth

to not touch again and shed our tears in the dirt.

We sketch out our dreams, like mixing colours on a free easel.

And then we refuse to blend them into a painting of ourselves together.

We teach each other how to feel in love,

to feel desired, to embrace and to collapse outside our own arms.

And then we teach each other what absence truly feels like,

burning and itching and rough.

We whisper nothings to each other;

promises that we shall stay, that we would wait forever and long

into the dreary days of the in-between, honeymoon long gone.

And then we turn our backs and walk to opposite sides of our universe,

to hold hands with the scarce left-over stars.

We show each other who we want more than anyone else.

And then we take each other’s hearts when we realise we are

who they never wanted.

We understand our voices and our flaws.

And then we scream foreign tongues at each other,

hurling shattered insides and twisted hopes across our distances.

The double blade to every sword we wield.

Your family home
has been sold
to the cultured,
the old vultures
feeding on the garden
thick with rabbits
and your father's dead
daughters, you sleep
in a pickup, tired
of work near the water,
fond of the instant,
you travel through
the country you know,
farm long forgotten,
the word free written
in red ******* your arm.

A vision of black,
Heads bowed,
Women weep as he's lowered into the ground.
His mother cried,
So did I,
People couldn't help but sigh.

The rain flowed beneath our feet,
Into the ground where he would retreat,
A place as hollow as hell,
Where he would never  fit in well.

I feel responsible for his death,
to his parents I apologise,
I wish to join him;
Every single day,
In the ground,
Where he lay.

Every day I awaken early
always I open the curtained window
to gaze upon the fire red sky
sink my thoughts into the tallest trees
distract my mind from these worries
I drift into the aromatic leaves of tea
try not to let flashes of you beset me
all your photographs I must quickly pass
I walk wooded paths for beauty to seek
and from my lips your name I shall not speak
and never think of our last road trip
the Colorado river, the ocean,
the weight of this sinking ship.
