Splendor on the beach
We meditated on the beach a little after sunrise
dawn poured gold over the ancient pages of the
Bhagavad Gita

As David read from that sacred text
seagulls paused mid-air and sand pipers
stood transfixed
pearls spilled from his lips the
very ocean blue lips of Lord Krishna

“Realize that which pervades the universe and
is indestructible; no power can affect this unchanging,
imperishable reality”
“The body is mortal, but He who dwells in the body
is said to be immortal and immeasurable” ~ Bhagavad Gita

I too listened enrapt, eager to learn more
the Sea rushed anxiously towards us
lapping at our feet
its pounding surf resembling the mighty five horse drawn
Chariot of Sri Vasudevaya

Just then...
Krishna Janardhana blew His conch
rays of the morning sun ignite a brilliant halo
crowning His head

“This infinite joy of union with the Lord
is easily attained by those who are free from
the burden of self-will and established
within themselves.” ~Bhagavad Gita

Luminous Prelude
I think I will read a sacred book
tonight
reminisce on His glories
recount the incredible leelas
of the Lord
then I will sweeten my heart
with songs to my beloved
anything that will bring You
closer
quiet the baying hounds
comfort the lost souls
light a candle in the darkest
hours before the
golden dawn

Blood Brothers
I cupped the cool, refreshing, water
pulsing down from the shower head
in my palms
trying to imagine how the
First Americans felt as he or she
cupped the pure, pellucid, untainted water
drumming down
from pristine waterfalls, snow-fed mountain streams
and Heaven itself

Looking out with spacious vision
upon an innocent, nascent America
prancing like a young buck across
the ****** frontier,
expansive, unsullied wilderness

Robed in white feathers of angels
our Native Ancestors guarded and protected
the precious resources of this land with Eagle Eyes
and soaring Compassionate Spirits

Their soft soled moccasins walked in beauty
and left no scars or tracks in the winter snows
under full corn moons
Council fires crackled while
animals and men sang praises to
The Great Spirit and Mother Earth
promising mutual cooperation and respect

From every point on the planet the Sun's voice
could be heard:
"The journey of Life though this world
harmoniously follows a path through the stars"

Last night I took
a Selfie with God
sakura blossoms
fell from our hearts
in dazzling pink swirls

a ruby cameo
glistened on the moon's
pearl white *****

And when I saw His face
reflected in the satin black
patina pools of my eyes

the misty tears wouldn't stop...

Our starry silhouette

Wild morning glories
Wild amethyst morning glories awaken by the sea
an avalanche of white waves rush to the shore
zebra shadows dance across
the phosphorescent beach
and God's heart beats inside the
transparent chest of a jelly fish

I listen to the ocean sing
cresting jeweled tides
crescendo
rise and fall
our footprints and all we think we are
vanish
without a trace

Love's ineffable breath

Pupa and Muma
White like the North
and the cold places on the earth
my great grandfather was fond of
over-proof *** and
caribbean sailor blue waves

His Nigerian goddess bore him
nine children
pretty little barefoot toffee skinned children
scampering through sugarcane fields
and tall tropical grasses
the lilting sound of their voices
playing on balmy breezes

My Aunt Glo remembers him well
strolling about with his switch and
stiff upper English lip
he governed the immense rural
Jamaican plantation in St. Elizabeth
around the end of the Nineteeth century

Everyone called him Pupa and his
wife Muma

I don't know much about Muma
except that her mother was an
enslaved person and that she
had to tolerate the insult of ritually
hiding her mixed children when
Pupa's mother, Lady Bush
flounced into town with her entourage

There is an old photograph of
the two of them:

Muma in white frock seated,
her eyes drooping brown sparrows
Pupa with his switch, pocket watch
and far away eyes

Sometimes I wish I could

Tomorrow disrobing
disclosing all her hidden secrets
how seductive it would be
to lift the fluttering veils

soft multi-colored gaslights glimmering

but then I ponder
in my heart
to what avail would all
this be if I don’t know

Will you kiss my heart tonight Lord?
And make me bloom lushly
like the lotus moon rising over

how I languish in the scattered funeral
petals of another orphaned day
seeking only Your radiance and

I think we are afraid of the vastness
we fear the vastness
the wild untamed beauty of our true nature

The other day at twilight,
I was traveling with my niece, Carina
down St. John's Heritage Highway
the view was absolutely breathtaking
no houses, no development, no people
just vast stretches of old Florida

As we paused to look at the primeval vista
my niece said she found it unnerving - the vastness

I told her I loved it because it reminded me of meditation
losing awareness of our limited, ordinary self
we enter an inexplicable vastness, primordial void
people-less, formless, infinite

We feel eternal truth rushing through our veins
We are part of a larger picture
greater than anything we can imagine

In the starry arms of the blossoming Universe
we rest safe, secure and loved forever

A honey bee wished me

Happy Mother's Day

buzzing close to the white lotus gardenia

pinned in my hair

We had all gathered in the

Buddhist Poornachandra listening

to the Thai Monk give an elevating discourse

Monk Tee discussed clinging

as a source of our suffering

And the Buddha did say

"Desire is the cause of all suffering"

He distinguished between the

different types of craving

eloquently revealing a

higher wish which was

the desire to do and spread

goodness and love

I thought about how Bhaktas

cling to Mother God the source

of all nectar and life

"Happy Mother's Day Sai Maa"

I whispered, "You are everything to us"

Eating the Yellow Rose
With his usual Feng Shui flare
delicately, David snipped the
yellow antique rose
waiting expectantly in the garden
pouring water into an elegant vase
he carefully created a
refreshing, attractive arrangement
for our kitchen counter

It was such a perfectly formed rose
its central saffron petals appeared
as golden palms folded in prayer
and the outer petals rejoicing
we decided it deserved an exalted place
on our new cocktail table

I was busy preparing an Asian lunch
crisping the deep seaweed green nori sheets
I sprinkled finishing touches on a dish
of stir fried brown rice with steamed asparagus

As we graced the luscious, fragrant, yummy food
my eyes fell upon the sunlit rose
In many traditions it is said that
what we see and hear as we are eating is also
imbibed

If the ambiance is peaceful
and visually charming
perhaps with the added benefit
of some soothing music
we are literally eating
beauty
and more importantly
we also
bloom with beauty and harmony
