All armies are the same
Publicity is fame
Artillery makes the same old noise
Valor is an attribute of boys
Old soldiers all have tired eyes
All soldiers hear the same old lies
Dead bodies always have drawn flies

The sun beats down on my boiling body,
Defeating the last morsels of energy left in it.
A concoction of sunscreen and sweat covers my skin,
As I reach to feel the rays beaming into my skull.
My fingertip gently touches my crimson cheek,
Anticipating a needle ***** upon contact.

The heat seeps from the pavement,
Through my sandals, I feel my feet burn.
This concrete is hot enough to host a cooking show,
And it seems I’m being served as the main course.
Hoping to cool my toes, I step aside into the grass,
That wilts with weariness as I do beneath the sun.

The sun causes such misery when the clouds hide,
And yet our mere existence depends upon it.
These precious and plentiful ultraviolet jewels of light,
Possess such a power in their incandescence.
And as the sun’s gravity pulls our planet into orbit,
We must force ourselves to acknowledge its importance.
My creative writing teacher thought walking outside would inspire us to write, so I wrote about the only thing I could think of the entire time: the sun/heat. This is Texas in June. Why would we walk outside?

Who are you to say, who I choose to love?
Who are you to say, who I pray to?
Who are you to say, I must be this way?
Who are you? I haven’t got a clue.
You say, “Actions unite a society.
You must act accordingly, you must!
Be normal, be how we have always been
Then, in you we shall place our trust.
If you don’t agree to this, Go away
Away from here, you do not belong!
Leave us in peace, we don't need you.
We send you off, for without you, we’re strong.”

But I’ll ask you: do I deserve to die?
Am I so disgusting I can’t live?
How can you decide I must die this way?
What have I done that you can’t forgive?
A poem for those who died during the Orlando massacre of 12th June 2016.

I am not your friend
I am the enemy
Of the end
That you embrace
With open arms
And open palms
With a name drawn
Onto clouds
And carved
Into skin

Its should be as natural as breathing
But, its as painful as bleeding
No suture for these open wounds
No future
To fate we're bound

I am all you have
I am the answer
To the riddles past
Raven and writing desk
Oedipus answered man
Its all I am
With a name and a face
And eyes that can see
Eyes that blink
And a hungry sphinx

It should be as open as the sky
But, its a dark and dysmal cave
Our hearts become arrows
In truth of the scarab
We shoot wide and narrow

The end of which we seek
Will not be peace
Fall on me now
Or follow me not

Hands brush against each other,
But dare not intertwine.
Their owners fear persecution,
So instead they choose to hide.

Eyes sparkle under sunlight,
Wide smiles sprawl across faces,
Lips quiver in loving desire,
But kissing is dangerous in these places.

A man bestows his husband with a present,
As they sit within a restaurant booth,
But all he can do is smile,
So onlookers won't know his heart's truth.

Under party lights, their arms intertwine,
Their eyes meet, their lips kiss.
They are surrounded by others,
Who only now can engage in this bliss.

They are free from judgement,
Free from danger, hearts soaring,
Lives molding together, passion flowing,
Love crying into the air, it is roaring.

Gunfire erupts, bodies are falling,
Safe places have become unsafe.
It seems we can not love freely,
No, not even in this place.
Rest in peace.
Heart
Often
Believes in
Beauty it sees.
Lush greenary with
Emerald shine coated so
Buttery with white flowers
Usher of nature guiding through
Season's festooned flowery display
Heart often believes in beauty it sees

To dream a chain to the Victorian Era
leave the shadows casting of isolation
where held hands held significance
and 'I love you' was not said in summation.

A rose bud grew in an arid desert
each perfect proper piece of petal
gave of its own sense of charm
and stood statically special.

I watched the rose bud picked
off the ground in asperity
while I hesitated to be heard
and I watched it crumble terribly.

I sat in desolation, in my own oasis,
I wedded the rose in my hand,
dreamt of a victorian era rose
and saw distance between two lands.

I will forever hold the rose in memory
As a reminder of the scent of last June
coerced to feel a faint of love in heart
by nothing more than conversations at noon.

Well the stages
Were lit for these people
And those pages,
Demanded another sequel.

The stroke of a pen,
The swipe of a blade,
Dare to do this again?
Do I let myself be afraid?

Each sequential simile,
Painted the portrait
That was given to me
of emotional anguish and torture.

While sunbathing in the shadows
I let the thoughts consume me
And as I'm alone, praying not to explode,
I remember the way that you'd hold me.

I was breathing, speaking, hurting,
a mask behind a rugged shell that was forgiving,
But under a slight gap in an undrawn curtain,
I was struggling, grieving, and tired of living.

The stage was roaring,
Viewers were watching, laughing,
And as I watched their smiles soaring,
I convinced myself to stop cutting.*

I am not one day closer to death
I am having one extra day of living
And if I shall witness my final breath
I am leaving this world singing.
"...I saw beauty in mountains and sunsets
...I saw beauty in things labelled 'as usual'
...And though I tried so very hard to forget
...I can't seem to find myself as beautiful."
-The version of me that let himself die.

Willing to give you so much

Buy you a rose for no reason

To lend you my ear
if there's anything on your mind

To lend you my shoulder
so you can let it all out

Make you laugh when you need to

Kiss your cuts and make you feel better

To tell you 'I love you' everyday
until our heads hit our deathbeds

Pouring my heart out for you on to paper
While I cry out all my tears
and bleed out all my blood
You should probably know
that you mean the world
and more to me
Though none of this
matters 'cause you're in the arms of another
Just an old poem.
